The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches has issued a statement expressing its "deep concern" about human rights abuses in Eritrea.

The body is also calling for the release of the head of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, Patriarch Antonios, who is under house arrest in Asmara.

Jackline Makena Mutuma is clergy with the Methodist Church in Kenya and a student at the Ecumenical Institute at the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, where her current research is related to the intersection of modern day slavery and global warming. She was also recently elected as one of the vice moderators of the WCC Commission on Faith and Order. In a WCC interview, she reflects on the urgent issue of preventing modern slavery.

Against Genocide - A Harecourt Conversation with Ekklesia
This year 2015, and specifically 24 April, marks the centenary of Europe's 'hidden genocide' - the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects inside their historic homeland which lies within territory constituting present-day Turkey. Expert and commentator Dr Harry Hagopian, in conversation with Ekklesia co-director Simon Barrow, explains why recognising and understanding this terrible episode in history is fundamental to establishing human rights, peace and justice in the region today. He also looks at the vital role faith communities can play in the quest for hopeful truth-telling in the face of ethnic and religious exclusivism. 
 
Harry Hagopian is an international lawyer, ecumenist and EU political consultant. He also acts as a Middle East and inter-faith advisor to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales and as Middle East consultant to ACEP (Christians in Politics) in Paris. He is an Ekklesia associate and regular contributor. Formerly an Executive Secretary of the Jerusalem Inter-Church Committee and Executive Director of the Middle East Council of Churches, he is now an international fellow, Sorbonne III University, Paris, consultant to the Campaign for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide (UK), Ecumenical consultant to the Primate of Armenian Church in UK & Ireland, and author of The Armenian Church in the Holy Land.

Eine Woche lang ging es in Niederndodelben bei Magdeburg um Frieden und Gerechtigkeit. Evangelische Kirchenvertreter aus sechs Ländern von drei Kontinenten nahmen teil an einer „Pilgerwanderung der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens.“ Dabei haben die 18 Frauen und Männer sowohl Friedensinitiativen als auch die Bundeswehr besucht.

Pilgerweg der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens - beeindruckende Erlebnisse

Evangelische Kirchenvertreter von drei Kontinenten waren in der vergangenen Woche in Niederndodelben bei Magdeburg zu Gast. Die EKM, die evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland, hatte zu einer „Pilgerwanderung der Gerechtigkeit und des Friedens“ eingeladen. Dabei wurden Gedenkstätten besucht, es gab ein Treffen mit der Friedensinitiative Offene Heide und ein Treffen mit Vertretern der Bundeswehr.

Today's Middle East Analysis podcast sees a welcome return to studio duties for Dr Harry Hagopian - the Bishops' consultant on matters relating to the Middle East North North Africa (MENA) region.

Er fährt rund 25.000 Kilometer und passiert dabei viermal die Alpen. Der Stationienweg ist ein verbindendes europäisches Projekt zum Reformationsgedenken 2017.
