International purveyors of the good groove, Futureboogie, notch up their eighth annual Summer Riot compilation EP this August, with an eclectic gathering of producers and tracks that fittingly encapsulate the current balmy vibes and a summer load of festivals and parties already behind us.

Techno dream-weaver, A Sagittariun, follows up his recent Futureboogie remix of Desert Sound Colony’s ‘Beta Burner’ with a hypnotic chugger, laced with the crystalline melodies that Sagi is renowned for, whilst Disco Halal regular, Kincaid, serves up some splendid 80s affected disco licks that reach for the stars.

Former Digital Justice member Liam Duggan (and one of the few Brits to release on Derrick May’s Fragile label), introduces his new project, The Red Flower Union, with a stylish yet wonky analogue workout.  

Prior releases for Cin Cin and Cutters have already brought STATUE to our attention, and ‘Ivory’ is a shining collage of live percussive work and ‘hands in the air’ piano and organ motifs, driven by its steady house rhythm.  And closing the ‘Summer Riot VIII’ release is Futureboogie regular, Neil Diablo, who yet again delivers a first class deployment of a new age Italo roller that’s packed with juicy synths and hard hitting drum machines.

STATUE - Ivory (FBR068) [clip]

STATUE is the percussion-based dance project of australian producer Tom Gould. He released some really cool records on "Cutters" that haven't gone unnoticed at LYO. Since then, he also dropped a split release with Ara Koufax on Fort Romeau's label "Cin Cin" and ultimately for lithuanian imprint "Le Temps Perdu". He also has a track called Ivory on the upcoming Futureboogie "Summer Riot VIII" compilation available next week. Welcome on board !

Just after releasing 'Solidify' on Le Temps Perdu, STATUE (Tom Gould) has become a cornerstone of this years, 'Summer Riot VIII' compilation commissioned by purveyors of good groove, Futureboogie. For 20 years, Saturday nights at Revolver have been home to The Late Show - an upfront musical experience, spread across 2 rooms. To celebrate the anniversary, we’ve put together our first official compilation of previously unreleased tracks from both the cage and the stage. Not some misty-eyed, nostalgia-tinged retrospective of club hits from years gone by, but a reflection of how the club sounds right now. The Late Show - As We Know It.  

No one ever simply walks into Revolver, it’s the kind of club which ingests you whole, and once inside you’ll notice that nothing stays still. From the time the lights are dimmed, until you finally emerge like Robert Duvall in that weird final scene from TXH1138, the music is continually morphing. This is what the compilation has attempted to capture. Play it from beginning to end and move between the rooms - a stage banger here and a cage jam there.
 
The cage (or as some prefer The Back Room), has over the last two decades established itself firmly as a Melbourne institution. Between dinner and dawn threads of House, Italo, Afro, Latin, and early rave all fuse together forming a mutant DNA, which every week is spliced together under salvaged surgical lamps. Meanwhile in the Front Room, a heavy bombardment of Bass, Garage, Funky, Techno, Club and Hardcore compete for the upper hand.

Exclusive Sobek - Charmer (STATUE Reconstruction)

Tom Goud, better known under his STATUE moniker, follows his percussive-influenced approach as he takes on remix duties for Sobek's latest track Charmer on Chapter 24. Having released a good handful of EPs, singles and remixes on imprints such as Cin Cin, Le Temps Perdu or Future Boogie Recordings the Australian artists makes his (remix) debut on the British label, which again proves its musical understanding by signing remixes and remixers who draw the attention of different electronic music sub-scenes to the track with each approach adding value to Sobek's original take. STATUE, however, chooses a midtempo stomping and chuggling basis using the synths of the original to create an almost shamanic or trancy note that lasts for several bars and evokes a mental commitment before implementing multi-tonal chords, which break with deliberately built monotony. STATUE's reconstruction couldn't be more memorable as it touches the listener's mind and body before taking its soul. 

Sobek's EP Charmer will be released on Chapter 24 on March 13th, 2020.

EXCLUSIVE: Sobek - Charmer (STATUE Reconstruction) [Chapter 24]

It all started with a fan letter…

“Hey Peter, just noticed you on a Rhys Chatham link. Just want to say I adore your work, I had a release on DFA recently, and they sent me some of your releases you did with Jonathan - so brilliant! I’ve had “Condo” track for a while, this completely catches my personality and when I feel disillusioned or need comfort, I always put this on, and it makes me feel good and strong.....i will stop gushing now! Thank you!

This was Peter’s reaction…

“I was quite flattered and was glad that ‘Condo’, one of my lesser-know tracks, was being appreciated. (I was also curious, because the most-viewed clip of ‘Condo’ on Youtube is actually a slowed down version: someone played the 12” 45rpm EP at 33 rpm. The result, however, is quite beautiful.)

I responded, said I hoped we could meet the next time I am in London, and Nik then suggested that she had a track that she was working on, and would I like to listen to it and possibly collaborate. I am always game for a new challenge, so I said sure and Nik sent an mp3.

I was immediately struck by the haunting and evocative nature of the track, the analog synths feeling fresh and familiar at the same time, the vocals having a primal quality of breath and phrasing. I loaded the track into Ableton and instinctively began recording some overdubs. I used analog (Prophet 5) and digital (Moog iPad) synths and a soprano saxophone. I then sent a mix to Nik.

Nik responded quite positively, and over the next few weeks we exchanged files back and forth, experimenting with different mixes and submixes. After a couple of dozen rough mixes, accompanied by email discussions among the three of us (Gabe had entered the process after the first few exchanges,) we settled on a final mix. Shortly after we had a final mix, I synchronized the track with a video that my partner Kit Fitzgerald was working on. This long extended shot fit the music perfectly, and we had a video for ‘Beachcombing’. (A still from this video serves as the artwork for the 12”.)

Initially, there was going to be a one-sided 12”, with ‘Beachcombing’ the only track. Nik then wrote to me that Dominic was also interested in working on a track, and would I be interested in working on a B-side with Dom. Of course, I readily agreed, and I received an mp3 of synth tracks. As previously, I began building up tracks, using the alto sax (rather than the sopranino used on Beachcombing) and the addition of a vintage Korg vocoder.

Once again, a series of file exchanges of mixes, submixes and discreet tracks ensued, and we finally settled on mix #26a. There is kind of a sweet quality which surprised the both of us.”

The result is before you now and forthcoming on Optimo Music. Modern collaborations with magical results!

Launched in 2019, Revolver Upstairs Records is the label of the famed Melbourne nightclub housing releases from various internal brands, resident artists and extended family.

STAY IN TOUCH is the second offering on the label, a collaboration (from a safe distance) between Revolver Upstair's Late Show resident STATUE (Futureboogie, Cin Cin, Les Temps Perdu) and Sydney producer and DJ, Tunnel Signs (I OH YOU, Cutters, Clouded Vision). STAY IN TOUCH combines the industrial strength of Tunnel Signs with the percussive chug of STATUE in an EP that anticipates the late nights we will have together again when distancing measures subside. All profits from the release will go to Foodbank who support those that are most vulnerable throughout this crisis. While we may not be together we can all STAY IN TOUCH.

Like a STATUE he stands tall, not holding a torch in his hand but playing with fire – musically. Melbourne drummer and producer Tom Gould, rather known to the electronic scene and its affiliates under his percussive STATUE project, has left his marks over the past years. With is Solidify EP on Le Temps Perdu or his Base/Face tracks on Fort Romeau's and Ali Tilly's label Cin Cin. Additionally Tom remixed Sobek's charming Charmer and took on remix duties for Dreem's track Charcoals, which was also out on V's Le Temps Perdu label, to which the Australian keeps a tight relationship based on mutual respect and likeminded thinking. However, for his upcoming release Stay In Touch, a collaboration with his mate Tunnel Signs , he's not only left his home port and joins Revolver Upstairs but also shares some deeper musical insights of his artistic being. With his art:cast contribution Tom manages the balancing act of combining both: hypnotic and dark synth-lines and more lively chords, but also music with a downtempo note and ones with more housey note. The result is a musically challenging as well as demanding approach that ties audiophiles close from start to finish and let them discover the artist's (musical) world within this hour.

Exclusive: STATUE & Tunnel Signs - Touch

Australian artists STATUE and Tunnel Signs join forces their upcoming EP Stay In Touch on Revolver Upstairs. The four tracker includes three original tracks as well as a dub version of Touch. The latter is the most (deep) housey take on the EP and contains all those chords that keep you hooked as they, as the track title suggests, touch your innermost emotional world, making one imagine or relive summer season out there in there. With a broken beat-touched intro the artists make their audience wait for more than a minute until one is introduced to the catchy synth-line that in the course is underlined and emphasized with a darker pad and filtered sounds until the initially mentioned broken beats are exchanged with a properley rolling house bass line adding even more drive and character to the take. In the course of the track or heat of the moment another synth-line that tonally is lower than the rather deep but partly bright lead-synth, is added and evokes a summer melancholy throughout the track until the end (of time).

STATUE's and Tunnel Signs' EP Stay In Touch will be released on Revolver Upstairs on May 29th, 2020.
