Japanese producer Anchorsong brings a mellow, uplifting 70s afro-disco feel to Afriquoi’s much-loved track ‘Kudaushe’. Replacing the euphoric afro-house vibe of the original with a funky, organic-sounding bassline, crunchy horns and keys, this version adds a sunset softness to Kudaushe’s warm marimba and hypnotic vocals.

Featuring veteran, ex-Bundu Boys Zimbabwean marimba player Kudaushe Matimba, the original is the first track of Afriquoi’s album ‘Kolaba’ which was released in September 2015.

A taster track of the new Afriquoi album being released in 2 parts in June and September 2016, Carnabala features the powerful vocals of Ghanaian-born, Sheffield-dwelling force of nature KOG, alongside Afriquoi’s trademark sound, blending original West African balafon and djembe with mesmeric chords, uplifting synths, punchy kicks, highs and snares. Oh gosh! Summer has come early this year!!

Wormfood are proud to present a full EP of remixes of the Abobo Nation Part EP by UK afro electronic pioneers Afriquoi.

We’ve drawn on a wide range of the freshest names in the emerging afro electronic scene, including The Busy Twist (Soundway), LV (Keysound/Brownswood/Hyperdub), Octa Push (Soul Jazz/ Steakhouse/ Enchufada), Wonky Logic (Boom Better) and Ranga.


1. The EP opens with UK afro bass wonderkids The Busy Twist and their full power treatment of Carnabala. Already something of a dancefloor classic + with strong support from Radio 1 Xtra’s Mistajam,  they’ve made it bassier, heavier, and even more danceable, with new vocals from Zongo Abongo straight out of Ghana, adding to the original vocals from K.O.G. Zongo Central!

2. Fresh from releasing their incredible Lingua album, Portugese duo Octa Push bring their own Lusocentric take on bashment, grime, kaduro + UK funky known as ‘afro tuga’ –  giving a catchy, rolling new treatment to the vocals of Nigerian Adedeji Adetayo.

3. Liverpool’s Ranga’s take on To Na Musu is a deep, explorative  meditation on afro house reminiscent of the best of Boddhi Satva and Henrik Schwartz, bringing the kora more to the forefront and adding some spoken word from Afriquoi kora player + vocalist Jally Kebba Susso, explaining that the song is a tribute to the women of the world. What a smoothy….

4. “Dance Inna London” is a 21st century reworking of Super Cat’s classic 1982 dancehall track "Dance Inna New York". With the acquisition of the original masters straight from Jah Thomas’ studio in Jamaica, the band have taken this classic cut as the jumping off point for a new version showcasing their rich full band sound, supplementing the original vocal with fresh lyrics from lead singer Nubiya Brandon.

Wormfood Records & One House Records are very pleased to announce the release of Afriquoi’s latest EP presenting two original tracks channelling afro and jazz fusion, backed with two remixes that rework the tracks for the dancefloor.

From humble beginnings in South London, Afriquoi have spent the last six years developing their own unique diasporic sound drawing on influences from across the African continent and reworking them for the dancefloor. The live show involves virtuoso musicians from Gambia, Congo and the UK and has been blowing the roof off festival stages and venues around Europe. In 2015 Afriquoi released their first album - Kolaba - to a sold out 1200 person audience at London’s Southbank centre.

On the EP’s title track - “Starship” - Afriquoi collaborate with the Mercury Music Award nominated saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, also winner of numerous other awards, and balafon player Moussa Dembele from Burkina Faso. Moussa has toured Europe and Africa extensively with his own band Koroleko. 

On A2 Hector Plimmer provides a deep electronic reworking, drawing out the soaring melodies from the original composition. Hector’s productions have been garnering lots of support on the radio recently and he releases his own much awaited album - Sunshine - on Albert’s Favourites in March.

On the B side “Can I Know You” is a frenetic collaboration with Kakatsitsi - a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana. Since 1996 Kakatsitsi have toured the UK multiple times and have established themselves as one of the leading African tradi- tional groups in the UK. 

Percolate resident and infamous party starters Krywald & Farrer regularly share the desks with the likes of Floating Points, Jeremy Underground and Motor City Drum Ensem- ble and provide a fitting house remix on B2.

Born out of deep collaboration between long time friends KOG (Kweku of Ghana of KOG and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (MD, guitarist and writer of acclaimed jazz/ soul afrobeat pioneers Nubiyan Twist), the 4 piece live show features KOG on vocals, balafon and percussion, Tom Excell on guitar, percussion and electronics, Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic) on synths and MPC and Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) on drums.

It’s a fresh, raw, fiercely energetic new sound, fusing electronics and deep afro grooves. Think Konono no.1 meets Shangaan Electro, Songhoy Blues and Débruit….

The first single, Open My Eyes, combines classic, shiny, Congolese-style soukous guitar licks with a funky afro-disco beat and KOG’s trademark vocals, alternating between Pidgin, Ga and English  in a nostalgic piece about self-love and making your own way.

A unique collaboration between Ghanaian MC+ singer K.O.G (Kweku of Ghana) and Dutch producers Umoja.

￼Born in Accra (Ghana) but currently resident in the Northern British ex-industrial city of Sheffield, K.O.G has exploded onto the European scene, slaying shows across Europe with afro-futurist outfit Onipa, afro-funk monster group K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade and as a guest with The Busy Twist, Afriquoi, Nubiyan Twist and Congo Natty.

This is the second in the series of one off collaborations with producers from around the world, following up on ‘Change’ with iZem (Lisbon) on Guts’ Pura Vida label, with forthcoming collaborations with The Busy Twist, Jus Now and more in the pipeline. With great responses to the latest Onipa EP on Wormfood/Mawimbi (September 2018), and many released in the pipeline for 2019 the K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade (Heavenly Sweetness) and guest features on Nubiyan Twist’s album (Strut), 2019 is definitely going to be his year.

Originating from Haarlem in the Netherlands, Dutch duo Umoja have over a decade of experience dishing out warm dusty grooves, unified by an intrinsic appreciation and understanding of world rhythm, the mechanisms of groove and contemporary electronic beats. Any attempt to pin down their sound is only a pipe dream: In the spirit of ‘Umoja’ a Swahili word meaning ‘Unity’, their approach to music is to unify grooves across the seven oceans, one record at a time.

“Kponyole” is a dark, brooding, digi-dancehall banger, with deep subs, hypnotic, rolling bass and sharp percussive undertones. Meaning ‘Be Careful’ in the Ewe language of the Volta region of Eastern Ghana, it warns of the dangers everyone must be careful of, from betrayal by close ones to spiritual pollution. Watch your back. Watch your brother. Watch out for bad spirits. Watch wear you tread. Watch your speakers too, that low end will do them some damage if you are not careful!

“Ayena” is much lighter, a traditional, hi-life style homage to the beauty of the female sex: shake for me, dance for me – with warm, bouncy, almost cartoon-like beats that will make any dancefloor bubble.

The Full EP comes with bonus instrumentals and a special Umoja VIP.

Collage is a compilation of 4 original tracks by Roscius, all composed, performed and produced shortly after live dates in Beirut, Lebanon, Limassol and Nicosia, Cyprus in 2016. 

From political speeches to street soundscapes, each track is made of layers and loops of live improvisations on percussion, piano and marimba, then edited and mixed. No midi, no readymade sound-bank, nor sample from other records have been used, only DIY recordings.
