I try not to think of those dark memories
Of arrogant bloodshed and careless decrees
Of retribution on our enemies

A man from the village, now walks through the forest
His mind on his hearth and his fire ablaze
He raises his axe and is struck with repentance, cries
I'm mistaken! I'm mistaken!

Struck down with illness, she lies in a stupor
A slow creeping pallor of yellow and gray
Gently she's laid by the metasequoia, cries
I'm awaken! I'm awaken!

Awaken! You denizens of evil
All you baying hounds and wretched beasts that stalk the night
The longest night is upon us
And our anchors and our lassos
Pull the sun down from the sky

Now tethered to the ground
Its heat and light is near extinguished
And a bone white moon begins to rise!

Now winter is deep all around the sequoia
A darkness as cold as the light of the stars
For a moment the earth is as still as a marble
And stares into space as the year disappears

But a spark still remains in the heart of the forest
In the vibrating strand in the trunk of a tree
The glyptostroboides remembers the summer
Remembers the sun and remembers its leaves!

And it bursts into flame with a reckless defiance
Igniting the sunrise and breaking the day
And so we give thanks to the metasequoia
And remember how this tree was given its name
Dawn sequoia! Dawn sequoia!
