	London-based electronic musician Beringei is back following a brief departure from music-making after his electrifying debut EP for WotNot records in 2019, The People, The Place. The central focus of his latest EP, Without You (also dropping courtesy of WotNot), is adapting to change and the process of making the best of one’s circumstances. The EP was born out of pre-pandemic personal troubles, namely Beringei’s injury and his struggles with mental health in 2019. Given the current state of affairs, it also doubles as a timely and restorative balm for these precarious times.

Opening track, “Peace of Mind”, wastes no time setting the tone. Warm, velvety keys, a rubbery bassline, and airy vocals courtesy of singer Andrés Alcover, quickly envelop the listener as if in a silky blanket. Andrés gently coos the song’s refrain “Oooh I don’t know/What it takes to find/Peace of mind” as the shuffling percussion kicks in and the synths get more spacey, evoking a kind of Herbie Hancock-esque space-jazz suite. There’s a wonderful ease and relaxed quality to the whole composition, offering a soothing counterpoint to the existential plea of the lyrics.

There are no grand gestures or melodramatic flourishes inherent to the track, or to Beringei’s music in general. Here, Beringei displays his knack for imbuing his dance music with a sense of restraint and equanimity. There’s comfort to be found in it.

Sampled on this one is the intro to @timtoh & Ranavalonas classic, ‘Everything’. I bopped so much to this track when it came out some 4 years ago and could always hear a sort of slowed down, R&B edit of it worked into a more lyrical song - this is that.

I’ve been wanting to get into the habit of putting up sketches from the past/present that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day. Instead of being my own judge, the idea is to get things out there and see what you make of it.

This beat was made with my Korg Electribe at the time. I'd also borrowed a sick tube mic from a friend which was quite forgiving on my voice so I recorded a heap with it. Story short, I tried loads of different versions of this one but the more produced it got the more I felt its essence faded.

another one from some time ago. I remember putting the beat together whilst listening to a healthy amount of Dorothy Ashby, hence the title. The sample in it I'm sure is 'Little Sunflower' chopped, mushed and stacked with a load of instruments.

As with most loops, ideas and projects, this one seemed to get lost in the shuffle but despite it having not developed, when it pops up I still get a sense of it being complete that way.

With a name that means 'problem', 'trouble' or 'issue' in Arabic, Mushkilla is a new MC to keep an eye on. Based in London by way of Bristol, he's teamed up with South London producer Dampé for 'Jesse James', a unique take on some intrinsically London sounds: garage, jungle and jazz. MIMS would like to wish the ever-on-it Wot Not label a happy 10th birthday. And to celebrate, we are premiering "Without You", a sublime slice of broken soul by Beringei, featuring William Florelle.

Beringei made his mark on debut 'The People, The Place'. The producer returns this April 9th with the deeper ’Without You’ EP.  Drawing on soulful melodies, low-slung house and broken beat grooves, and R&B-flavoured bass lines to create a simultaneously forward yet nostalgic sound.

Revolving around the theme of adapting to change, the EP deals with turning negatives into positives, after the artist struggled through injury and mental-health related issues in 2019, putting him in a good place to help others deal with the troubles of 2020.

At the center of the EP, and one of it's higher tempo pieces, likes the woozy, body moving, broken beat sounds of "Without You", aided by frequent collaborator and multi-talented labelmate, William Florelle.
