At The Moment is a podcast about the challenges Black students at Ohio University face in classes, with professors and in their day to day lives. Join host, Nia Dumas, and guests discuss the Black experience at a PWI (Predominantly White Institution).

Dumas says: "As a minority on campus, we as Black students have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. We are going to tackle many of the issues we face. For example, there are many times where there is only one black student in a class and the content we are learning comes from a majority white perspective. So, we have to constantly outsource for information.”

The Experience of Being Black In America : A Candid Conversation

For over four decades Athens attorney James Sillery and his wife Debbie have been involved in various civic and charitable causes in Southeastern Ohio, but this year they did something totally different and bold.

In September, they brought to Athens a 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Eduard Yakubyk to start a new life in Athens County.

Eduard, who could not serve in the Ukrainian military due to health issues, had escaped Mariupol during the intense fighting and after crossing two countries arrived in Hamburg, Germany.

But life was tough there and employment dismal, so Eduard decided he wanted to come to the United States.

Within a similar timeframe Jim and Debbie had decided they needed to do something to help Ukrainians, so they reached out and were matched with Eduard.

They started a new non-profit corporation New Beginnings Athens, LLC to raise some donations to help Eduard and possibly bring his mother and other Ukrainians to Athens.

Although Jim and Debbie have paid for all his living expenses, donations helped pay for Eduard to enroll in intensive English classes at Ohio University.

He has done so well at assimilating into Athens life that he will enter Hocking College next term in the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program due to the generosity of Athenians. He will live in a Hocking College residence hall.

In observance of March being Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, The Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities has been busy working with community partners and local organizations to shed light on the varied and unique experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities. The month included a visit to the statehouse in Columbus, a march on Court Street, movie screenings and culminated with the annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Fest at the Athens Community Center March 27. The event featured a performance from The Athens County Community Singers.

The Ransom Of Red Chief

It’s June in small town America and that means planting season is in full swing. Children gather stones and the townsfolk assemble for an annual event – the lottery.

As the old timers say, "lottery in June, corn will grow soon." But when they draw names to determine the winner, we find it's not the type of lottery one wants to win.

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, first published in The New Yorker magazine in 1948, is one of the most famous short stories in the history of American literature.
