Milledgeville City Council District 6 Candidate Steve Chambers

Dr. Collinda j. Lee is a Special Education Coordinator with the Baldwin County School District. She is a lifelong resident of Milledgeville. Her call to public service first came around the family dinner table, where her father— lifelong educator, former city councilman and county commissioner, Collins P. Lee – pressed Dr. Lee and her three sisters to do their best for their community.

First elected in 2009, Dr. Lee represents the First City Council District, which encompasses portions of west Milledgeville, including the Autumn Chase, Hillcrest, Mills Trace, Sunny Acres and Wray Court neighborhoods. 


She is running unopposed for the first district seat on the Milledgeville City Council in the November 2nd General Election.

Milledgeville City Council District 1 Incumbent Dr. Collinda J. Lee

Almost two decades after his death, country music artist Johnny Cash maintains a hallowed place in American culture. Revered for the way he wrote and sang America into song, he’s equally admired for the way he lived his life:  An ardent defender of the underdog who never shied away from the opportunity to speak truth to power. 

In the ninth collaboration between WRGC and the Center for Georgia Studies, historian Michael Stewart Foley joins Georgia College’s Mark Huddle to explore how Johnny Cash’s life influenced his politics, and how the singer used empathy to engage in the turbulent politics of Post War America.

Michael Stewart Foley is the author of Citizen Cash: The Political Life and Times of Johnny Cash, a book examining how contemporary politics shaped Cash into an enduring symbol of the American ideal. Foley is a historian of American political culture and American civilization at the Université Grenoble Alpes in France.  

Mark Huddle is a professor of History at Georgia College and the Director of the Center for Georgia Studies.

A Spring classic returns to Georgia College’s Front Campus.

On Saturday, April 30, the Georgia College Music Department hosts its annual Jazz Fest in downtown Milledgeville.

Each year, the Georgia College Jazz Band and Jazz Combo join jazz bands from high schools across the region for an afternoon of music in the outdoors under the towering tree canopy of the university’s Front Campus. 

This year’s featured artist is trombonist Marshall Gilkes. In addition to rehearsing and performing with the Georgia College Jazz Band during Jazz Fest, Gilkes will join music students in Baldwin County Schools for a series of jazz clinics.

On this edition of Georgia College Connections, Georgia College Double Bass Instructor Chris Enghauser joins host Daniel McDonald to invite listeners to an afternoon of jazz in downtown Milledgeville.

Valerie Rodgers | Georgia State Senate District 25 | Democratic Primary

In February, the National Park Service named Andalusia, the home of author Flannery O’Connor, a National Historic Landmark.
This designation recognizes O’Connor as a significant contributor to the United States’ cultural heritage and Andalusia as a place worthy of preservation and interpretation.
On Monday, July 25, National Park Service representatives will travel to Milledgeville to celebrate this designation with a plaque presentation. 
Georgia College Director of Historic Museums Matt Davis joined WRGC host Daniel McDonald to talk about the designation and what it means for visitors to the house museum dedicated to O’Connor, her writing and the Cline-O’Connor family history in Milledgeville. Davis also previews the opening of a new interpretive center at Andalusia.

The City of Milledgeville swore in its first female mayor Friday.
Mary Parham-Copelan took the oath of office in a ceremony on the steps of City Hall.
Roughly 150 people filled one block of East Hancock Street for a celebration that included a full choir, invocations by two pastors and a letter from US Representative John Lewis. 
Mayor Parham-Copelan told attendees she looked forward to working with anyone interested in moving Milledgeville forward. 
“As I’ve shared with so many—Unity—there’s power in the strength of unity. Together we can do all things. But divided, we can do nothing.”
Baldwin County Probate Court Judge Todd Blackwell administered the oath of office to Parham-Copelan and Aldermen Collinda Lee, Jeanette Walden, Denese Shinholster and Walter Reynolds. Councilmen Richard Mullins and Steve Chambers were not present for Friday’s ceremony.

The Hamlet Chicken Processing Plant Fire is a seemingly isolated event in American labor history. 
On September 3rd, 1991, a fire at the Imperial Foods processing plant killed 25 people in the small town of Hamlet, North Carolina. It was the worst industrial disaster in the state’s history, and a stark reminder of the dangers workers face in America’s continuing industrial evolution.
But as historian Bryant Simon writes in his new book “The Hamlet Fire: A Tragic Story of Cheap Food, Cheap Government, and Cheap Lives,” the disaster is emblematic of a shift in an American ethos that values cheap commerce over anything else.

A graduate of Florida State University and Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, he has practiced law in the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit for 21 years, six of those as an Assistant District Attorney.
The district attorney is the top prosecutor for the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit's eight counties: Baldwin, Green, Hancock, Jasper, Jones, Morgan, Putnam and Wilkinson.
The candidates in the district attorney race are running in the republican primary on June 9th. There are no democratic candidates vying for the office.
