Originally for flute quartet, "The Interaction of Particles" is one of the only pieces I began writing without a subject. Repetitive motifs develop, combine and repel, with the work ending in disintegration as all energy is exhausted.

The Interaction of Particles

Written for improvisatory ensemble, "Memory and Landscape Through the Darkroom" represents three views full of character. From the icy, turbulent peak of Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, we are taken to the Pembrokeshire coast in South Wales before arriving late-afternoon in New Orleans, on the banks of the Mississippi.

With three movements came three different approaches to improvisatory music - an experiment in the range of control a writer can have on their performers.

This work was written for Cardiff University Contemporary Music Group as part of their concert celebrating Sir Harrison Birtwistle's 80th birthday. "Enduring Victory" uses the main motif from Birtwistle's orchestral work "The Triumph of Time" to produce material which goes towards creating a soundworld similar to that of other works of his. A broadly sparse and sporadic vibraphone line is punctuated by side drum and suspended cymbal textures.

Enduring Victory

"Memories Breathe..." takes the artwork of Ivor Davies as its basis. Having attended Davies's lecture at the opening of his retrospective exhibition, Silent Explosion, at the National Museum, Cardiff, I learned that Davies preserves the history of many of his artworks by refusing to remove the dust that accumulates over time. This brings to mind events that have occurred between the work's completion and today.
