With an artist roster as prolific and well-established as Kompakt's, you won't find much downtime that could be used for new entries to the catalogue. That's why we are especially happy to not only present the inaugurating full-length of VERMONT, but also introduce two distinguished producers to the fold that have built their impressive careers in our immediate vicinity, albeit appearing on the label for the very first time: Innervisions' MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW (of MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE fame), two floor familiars praised for their gripping club tunes that showcase a surprisingly unwound and novel side to their respective artist personas.

With VERMONT, MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW submit a noticeably mature work that seems to come from a well attuned production duo, effectively concealing the fact that this is their first collaborative effort... and a decidedly informal one at that: these cuts were not conceived with specific aesthetic goals in mind, but emerged from a series of loose jam sessions disclosing the trespassing spirit of the sonic adventurer. It's in the sanctum of Danilo's former Cologne studio, surrounded by an armada of vintage analogue synthesizers, that the two music buffs somewhat inadvertently tapped into the city's collective subconsciousness and minted fourteen sleek soundscapes of almost krautrockish proportions.

04 Vermont - Sharav

This is a mix I've sat on for a long time - nearly an entire year! On a hot August day of biking many, many miles, some incidental sweaty hijinks, and after completing work on Sympathies VII earlier in the day, this was recorded during a rampaging late-night mix session at the then still-fledgling Bounce House, Philadelphia. All alone in the sweltering warehouse space, I used the usual dancefloor speakers as overkill booth monitors and romped, recording three mixes in one night, ending with this one. 

This is, in some ways, me operating at my finest, or at least showcasing my best tendencies as a DJ: a wide range of genres, intentional progression in energy and between genres, deliberate selection, seamlessly executed eclectic stunts, a flow-state of three of four decks. It's also special to me because I happened to recreate one such dramatic stunt that I improvised when I had played in NYC earlier in the year for my Mild Fantasy record release party during a particularly emotionally turbulent period of life. The gaping dramatic, emotional moment on the dancefloor shockingly didn't clear the crowd - something that has been instructive for my growth as a DJ. 

This mix is deliberate and methodical in progressing through vibes and genres, beginning with a gentle atmospheric bath and moving into bass and wiggly  material and sunshine-y rollers before settling into a full-tilt 3+ deck techno firestorm and easing back out into some surprises and delights. expect (or don't!) wormhole techno, drum & bass, dubstep, a handful of originals, and even a glint of hyperpop.

I first made this set after another black life was lost, the fact that I can’t remember which event it was speaks volumes. For time sake let’s say that it was somewhere around the time Philando Castile was murdered live on the internet. A friends of mine asked me to play a show at a space that is known for electronic music. As a rapper primarily, I don’t get to showcase the other styles of music I make as often so this show was a great chance to do that. What came out of it is this: Black Power Ambience. 

I was angry, hurt, and conflicted at the time, I needed to find a place to channel this energy before it went into something counterproductive. With tracks I made, collaborated on, and discovered through my own listening this performance came to be. Laced with the words of the ancestors a path came into sight. Everyone will experience this differently, so I will let you tell me what it means to you. 

The first step of dealing with pain is to face it head on in its full form, after that the real work begins. Who better to heal us then the mothers who know, and any man who has ever known has reached a balance between these two energies. I dedicate this to my mother and father any anyone who had helped me see this balance. It’s a point I have fully yet to reach, but I am closer because of you all. 

Thank you to the ancestors that came before me, that inspire me, that feed me the knowledge and rhythm I need to survive.
