Unstoppable

Is music even real? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. It’s like oxygen. It’s this thing that floats around in the air that nobody will ever see or touch, but it somehow supports life. 

What makes music real to a certain extent could be the feelings it spawns within living beings. Through music, people can encounter their deepest selves, the same way different styles of music encounter each other on Feeling Affection’s new EP, Real Encounters.

The latest release on the chart-topping Seattle-based record label, Feral One Records, these two tracks remind listeners that there are no boundaries between genres, and by extension, no boundaries between human beings (except the ones they build themselves).

The title track of the release breaks the boundaries between dance music and instrumental music by essentially throwing a progressive rock composition over a techno kick. Within the piece, the lines are blurred about what sound comes from where. An acid synth line sounds like a distorted guitar riff. Deep house pads are more Fender Rhodes than anything synthetic.

Coming second is, ironically, a cut entitled “When Does It Start?” which facilitates encounters more within the realm of dance music, but encounters that are no less joyous and animated. Ravey stabs tease a pure house drop and a minimalistic bass line. At first, they remain separate but as the music moves forward, the different elements align into one succinct whole.

This is music that reflects the substance of the dancefloor; where the realness of encounters is a reflection of the realness with which one presents themself. No words are necessary. Bring your real self to your movements and all the boundaries dissolve away.
