February is Heart Month: Essential Tips for Responding to a Heart Attack

In recognition of Heart Month this February, Jenny Talley from Augusta Health shared crucial advice on how to respond during a heart attack on WSVA's Mike Schikman Show. Here are the key takeaways:

Call 911 Immediately: The first and most critical step is to call emergency services without delay.
Administer Aspirin: If the person is conscious and it's appropriate, give them aspirin to help thin the blood.
Stay Calm and Reassure: Keep the person calm and encourage them to stay still to avoid further strain on the heart.
Monitor Closely: Watch their condition carefully. If they stop breathing, begin CPR immediately.
Use an AED: If an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available and necessary, use it as instructed.
Wait for Paramedics: Do not attempt to drive the person to the hospital. It's safer to wait for professional medical help to arrive.
These steps can make a significant difference in the outcome of a heart attack. Remember, quick and calm action is vital.
