This album was a tribute to Alien Heat, the band which came before Dark Company. It features 16 songs that the band at least partially wrote during their odyssey which lasted from 1989 to 1990.

There are several Alien Heat songs that Dark Company did not include in this collection. They are Alien Heat, Ulysses and Twilight Dancer (lost lyrics and nobody could remember how all of these songs went), Odd and Badass Boogie (nobody could reproduce Marc’s amazing original basslines), and Joe Right (Alien Heat never agreed on a definitive version).

These are the alpha/beta mixes of the material we are currently working on. These mixes are very much ‘work in progress’ and we thought you might like to have the opportunity to hear these fantastic songs the way they stand at the moment. Inevitably they will sound different when fully recorded, mixed and mastered.

Updates to the Alien Heat album will become available as and when more work is done. New versions of the songs will be uploaded and will replace the older versions. We will continue to let you know when we have done this in the Wud Records ‘News’ service and on Twitter.

We are hoping to finish these songs during 2022.

The Plank is an old, heavy and mighty Antoria jazz bass. It has many customisations and is always tuned very low, mostly B-E-A-D. It has pylon wires and battleship chains for strings.

Music is the language of the soul. It has a huge vocabulary, and you have to make up the meaning yourself. Perhaps that’s why people love it so much.

Orignally there to be 18 tracks on At Least 1000 Words. At the time of the album’s release, CDs were limited to 74 minutes. This required some things to be edited back quite brutally. One track, It Starts Right Here, was dropped entirely and shuffled along to open Flicker’s second album, HappySad.

It Starts Right Here would have been the opening track on Side Two of the album, as it were, or track number nine, sliding in between Welcome to the Family and Blown Away. One Place was originally slated to appear between Aeroplane and Serendipity.

Side One of the album is made up of musical pieces that were created before November 2000. Side Two consists of pieces composed from November 2000 onwards.

This section of Wud Records is where we have put the music and memories of glorious bands from days gone by. These bands are no longer heard live, but this is a place where their wonderful songs can live on and be enjoyed. We created these pages because we are fans of these bands. This material is not owned by us but by independent individuals and companies.

The main purpose of the archive pages is to pay homage to other bands that we have known and loved over the years. We have always felt it to be a terrible shame that there are so many bands that write great original material who simply disappear without trace after they split up and it is no longer possible to ever hear any of those songs again. Perhaps we can go a small way to rectify this issue.

Fun Facts:
The freight train described in this song is the exact same train as the one described in Cunning and Tricks, another song on the Anthology album.
One of Pok’s very early songs, this one was mined from his book Golden Temple and the Laughing Sun during an outbreak of archeology.
The entire song was recorded and produced very quickly one day, when other things had actually been planned.
As the whole thing went fast, there was still time for those other things.
Sven was not available on that day, so there are no drums.
The acoustic guitar is George's Yamaha, fitted with 9-guage electric strings.

Then Came the Last Days of May was always a tremendously popular Bastard Sons of Dennis song. It was one of the first songs the duo ever performed, appearing in the duo's first ever live performance at The Angel in Exeter.

The lyrics are a true story. This song was composed by Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser, guitarist and vocalist of Blue Öyster Cult, after three friends of his from Stony Brook University in New York were murdered in a drug deal that went very wrong.

Derek would often change the word 'truck' in the line "Now and then a truck" to 'duck'. This was always hilarious, with his exemplary comic timing.

Ducks became something of a theme for The Bastard Sons of Dennis. Fans would often bring their own toy ducks along to shows.

Occasionally Chuck's lips wouldn't be moist enough to perform the little whistle that comes at the end of his solo. This was also very funny. Check would just end up blowing and puffing and shrugging in a comical way.

The whistle actually comes from the 1970s uk sitcom The Goode Life. The character Tom Goode would often give this little whistle. Exactly where Tom took it from remains largely mysterious.

Blue Öyster Cult perform this song in the key of E minor. The Bastard Sons of Dennis transposed it to A minor.

The tempo increase after the first verse was Derek's suggestion. It was a very good one.

During a live Bastard Sons of Dennis performance, there would be a bit of chat, such as thanks to the venue and sound guy and personel introductions, after the guitar solo and before the "Dominance", "Submission" section.

In the long pauses before "It will be time!", Derek and Chuck would spin their guitars upside down. Stuck on the back of Chuck's guitar was a large sign that read "Throw panties now!", and on the back of Derek's was a similar sign that read "If no panties, bras!"

Very few undergarments were ever actually tossed onto the stage, apart from on one occasion when somebody had brought a big bag full of old knickers and distribued them to the audience. Both the stage and the band were covered in them!

Wings Wetted Down is a truly wonderful song, often overlooked. The craftsmanship of its composition by the legendary Bouchard brothers is masterful.

This version is in G# minor. The chord progressions are so beautifully constructed, with a minor second A major and a 'devil's interval' flattened fifth chord of D major providing a gloriously satisfying twist.

Both Chuck and Derek take solos. Derek's is an addition that is not found on the original version.

Wings Wetted Down was always a very popular live song. It was performed on many occasions by The Bastard Sons of Dennis and introduced by the band with a cryptic and comical description.

Fun Facts:
As this song was being recorded it seemed to grow in stature from something that was pretty ordinary to something that was actually pretty good.
It is a song of healing, fortitude and moving on.
The key is E major.
This was the very first time that George had recorded two-handed tapping.
Several months previously a girl who George was deeply fond of had been forced to move hundreds of miles away due to a new parental job.
When the advent of social media many years later allowed them to get in touch again, it turned out the young lady in question was also devastated by the sudden move.

George's Dad liked the guitar in this one.
We were surprised at how long it was.

It was never performed by any band.
This was a therapy song that George wrote when he was feeling rather disgruntled with his girlfriend.
The lead guitar is clean with a touch of reverb from the HH PA amp and Boss OC2 octaver.
The arpeggio rhythm guitar is beautifully flanged by the EHX Electric Mistress.

Fun Facts:
Losing Your Grip was part of the set of Wud.
Each of the three verses was written for a different person.
Played live, George would turn the Electric Mistress on and off.
All the knobs were turned up to the maximum.
In this version, he didn't like the click it made, so it was used in the Tascam 244's auxilliary channel.
This was a stereo channel but the effect was only in mono, so the results are a bit strange.
Some of the song is in 6/8 and some is in 4/4, so the Boss Dr Rhythm had to be turned on and off at appropriate moments.

Fun Facts:
Песня За in Russian is pronounced Piestnia Za in English.
It means something like "Song for..."
This was the longest composition George created.
It is in four separate parts and these have been separated in an EP version.
Each part is shorter than its predecessor.
The first chord is a magical chord that suddenly came to George's fingers as he was composing the music for Indian Summer.
The EDP Wasp makes an approximation of the synth sound desired, but is not very close.
George finds the lyrics and vocal performance unlistenable due to being too emotionally honest and close to his 19-year-old's soul.
He still likes Part 1 and Part 4 though.

This went way beyond the normal entropy which followed the closing of a cycle of good fortune.
It's Just a Game is a song of esoteric chords and key changes.
Some of these chords went on to form the basis of the song Lullaby, which came later.
The Electric Mistress is set to the 'red' setting, as used for the song Planets.

George wrote this song for a new girlfriend after a couple of weeks.
She hated it!

Fun Facts:
* Out of His Head is a song that features a collaboration between George and Dean Trotter.
* This song is in the key of D minor.
* The lyrics were written on 3rd July 1986, according to an original lyric document.
* The guitar part had been composed a few months previously.
* George was very pleased that Dean was able to write some lyrics to complete the song as the guitar part pleased him.
* Dean's melodic wailings towards the end represents the sirens of police cars.
* The drum solo represents the blows from fisticuffs, boots and truncheons that rain down from all sides upon the victims of police brutality.
* Dean wrote these lyrics very shortly after being shocked and horrified to witness his friend Jack the Frag being brutally arrested and beaten in Exeter High Street in broad daylight at around lunchtime for having a blim of hashish in his pocket.
* Dean himself had been attacked and brutally beaten by police whilst travelling to the unofficial 1986 Stonehenge Festival just a couple of weeks before.
* The previous year, the Stonehenge Festival was prevented from happening by the police.
* That incident became known as The Battle of the Beanfield, and the terrible and unnecessary police brutality was documented in the media worldwide.
* The Levellers wrote a song about the incident on their well known album Levelling the Land.
* A few weeks after the Stonehenge battle, in autumn 1985, George was taken into the back yard of Exeter police station and assaulted by an officer for reporting his bicycle stolen.
* Police brutality was commonplace in England in the 1980s.
* A lot of people in those days referred to the police as “Thatcher’s Gestapo”.
* Fortunately the uk police are far better today than they were in the 1980s.
* Due to many years of cassette deterioration, the quality of this recording is not great.
* We have managed to improve a little on what remained.
* Out of His Head continued to live on as a staple of Rough Terrain’s live set after The Subterraineans had folded.

Sadly, Dean took his own life by suicide at the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol, in 1994. He was just 29 years old.

Dean had no help at all from the uk medical profession or social services for his mental health, addiction and homelessness. If he had had some professional help he would surely still be here with us today.

Rest in peace, Dean.

Fun Facts:
Where Are You was originally written in Marc’s tiny bedroom, which was full of broken electronics and junk, when he lived in Countess Wear during the early days of Alien Heat.
Marc created a lot of the early parts and main chord structures for this song, including the keyboard parts that follow the choruses.
Alien Heat never really did much with this song, which was a great shame as it rocks!
It is in the key of Am and the tempo is 162 BPM.
It was a real favourite among George’s students when he used it to teach English in his TEFL classes.
During a rainy afternoon in 2002 when there was no decent recording gear available, George made a hasty recording of this song on the 4-track so Emma could hear it with a view to performing it with Clonk.
She was not impressed by it at all.
You can hear George’s solo version on Dark Company’s ‘Out-Takes and Blorts’ page.
During the days of Dark Company’s first manifestation, Jeff created the driving rhythmic bassline.
The entire instrumental section after the third verse was created in one glorious moment of inspired jamming.

Fun Facts:
The music for Alpha Omega was originally written by Marc in his tiny cluttered Countess Wear bedroom.
Marc had borrowed George’s DR220A drum machine and Tascam 244 4-track and laid down several grooves, one of which became Alpha Omega.
The basic drum pattern used was the drum machine’s on-board Bossa Nova.
The precise arrangement remained something of a conundrum for a long time.
Pete wrote the talkover part sometime after the rest of the lyrics, upon request to add something into the mix that was a little different to go over the strange instrumental section.
If you wish to keep time to the instrumental section with the swirly guitar, the time signature of each bar changes.
The first bar is 13 beats, then 10, then 7, then 4, then back to 13 again.
If you count this as four 3s plus an extra one at the end, then three 3s plus an extra one at the end, then two 3s plus one and one 3 plus one, it may be easier!
When George lived in Plymouth this is another tune he would play in the tunnels and subways to earn a few pennies to buy food.
The key is Cm.
Back in the summer of 1992, Big Bad Al wrote a lovely solo violin part on the sequencer in the instrumental section after the first chorus.
Unfortunately we no longer have the violin disk for the S900 and somehow Al’s part was lost during 15 years of disk degradation, so we have tried to approximate it using a cello sample instead.
With all its tempo and time signature changes, the recording of this song on the sequencers was perhaps the most technically challenging of all Dark Company’s songs and was one of the first to be tackled for that very reason.
The arrangement was too complex for Alien Heat to ever make anything out of it and it remained trapped in Marc’s bedroom until Dark Company took on its challenge.

Fun Facts:
Dancing in the Dark was originally written and performed by Alien Heat.
This song is in the key of Bm and the tempo is 131 BPM.
This is arguably the least intellectually challenging set of lyrics Pete ever wrote!
When Pete was referring to this song, he generally called it "Farting in the Park".
Richard's original keyboard riffs are actually played on guitar during the verses.
The guitar parts are played on the Ice Maiden.
In Alien Heat, this was the song where Graham played a drum solo, during which the rest of the band would roll and light cigarettes, or perhaps something a little stronger, before he brought them back in with a big drumroll.
Sven's drumming in this version is rather magnificent and he acknowledges the aforementioned drum solo with a short groovy drum break.
Josh replicated Richard's keyboard solo.
We double tracked it in the end after recording 20 or 30 takes and chose the best two because the synth just wouldn't quite behave itself.

Ship to Shore was originally written and performed by Alien Heat.
Richard programmed the original keyboard sounds himself on a Yamaha DX7 and these are approximated on the studio synths.
We tend to feel that they did a reasonable job.
This song is in the key of Em and the tempo is mostly 125BPM.
The bassline is a mixture of Marc's original Alien Heat part and what Jeff played in Dark Company's second incarnation.
Ship to Shore contains a moment of 'definitive cowbell' before the final vocal section.
Ship to Shore was a favourite of Alien Heat and their fans.
All the guitar parts are played on the Ice Maiden.
The intro is mostly Em9 and Bm11.
The verses are Em and Bm, and at the end they go to G, F#m11 and Bm11.
The keyboard solo is based around a G, F#m, Bm riff.
Before the keyboard solo and at the end of the song there is a section that goes G, F#, F, Em7, Cm7, Em7, Cm7.
In Alien Heat, the song usually began with the cry: “Cue The Noise!” as Richard started the number with a huge sound that he created himself on the DX7.
There were many great moments of inspiration from all five band members of Alien Heat that led to this song being the way it was.
Jeff added his considerable talent to the arrangement of the Dark Company version.

Fun Facts:
Abnormal was originally written and performed by Alien Heat.
It was the very first song that the whole Alien Heat band created together.
Abnormal was composed by five blokes squeezed into a small bedroom in Topsham Road, Exeter on a particularly rainy November afternoon in 1989.
George studied Graham’s original drum parts and programmed them into the sequencer.
Jeff then added the extra percussion parts.
The bassline in this recording is an amalgamation of Marc’s original bassline and Jeff’s subsequent bassline, both of which we loved.
Richard programmed the original keyboard sounds himself and these are approximated on the studio synths, which we tend to feel did a reasonably good job.
The guitar solo at the end before the swoops, howls and feedback had contributions from Jeff and from Phil the Fiddle.
Phil’s contributions were from when this song was performed in Prague by Doctor Watson.
Pete would always try to stick his head as far as it would possibly go into the speakers of George's cab when the feedback and howling started.
This song is in the key of F#m, the other chord being Em.
The tempo is 124 BPM.
The original version of the song suddenly and inexplicably broke into some different chords at the end.
The updated ending retains the bi-chordal simplicity of the rest of the song.

Fun Facts:
* Another Star in the Sky is dedicated to George’s father, who passed away around the time of its creation.
* He never heard it.
* In the evening of the day when Mr Davies senior died, the sky was cloudy and only one star could be seen.
* Another Star in the Sky was almost named Another Scar in the Sty due to an outburst of mispronunciation.
* This would have been appropriate in some ways, because George (bass) and Dave (drums) were playing in a kick-ass folk band called Pyg at the same time.
* Pyg’s live performances could be a bit hit-or-miss, due to some of the dynamics within the band.

* Another Star in the Sky is based around the acoustic guitar part.
* It is in 6/8 time at a sedate 75 BPM.
* The key is G# minor, and it ends on a B major.
* Lucy’s cello copies the acoustic’s melody.
* George’s son Dan helped with the recording of the Stratocaster solos.
* Dan took up playing guitar that day and has now become a fabulous and accomplised player.
* No real horn players could be found at the time, so those parts were played using MIDI.
* The horn parts are actually quite amusing and rather scrappy.
* One of the guitar parts was made by setting the old Marshall to the most horrible sound possible, with maximum overdrive, presence and treble, and no mid or bass.
* The idea for this came from a track by Tindersticks, called Vertrauen II, from their second album.
* Dave was wincing as if to say “This just isn’t gonna work!”
* The part was dropped back in the mix and treated to a little reverb and it was “just right”.
* The idea for the simple yet distinct piano came from a piece George used to play on piano as a boy of about nine.

Fun Facts:
* After George returned from the Czech Republic to the uk, it was not long before he became involved in the music scene again.
* One of the bands he worked with at that time was Search Party.
* George’s role was sound engineer and manager.
* Soon afterwards the band was signed to indie promotors Masswick.
* Search Party were a favourite band of the party scene from around 1997 onwards.
* Serendipity was inspired by a Search Party song called One Direction
* Serendipity was composed in honour of the band Search Party and their wider entourage.
* A search may lead to serendipity, after all.
* A little Search Party material is available to be heard in the Archives section at the Wud Records website.
* George didn’t have any of the lead guitar part worked out until the record button was pressed.
* Dave’s astonished face when he heard it for the first time was a picture!
* He scratched his head and said “Wow, that’s a completely different tune to the one I thought it was!”
* The backwards acoustic guitar was a substitute for an acid trumpet, a player for which could not be found.
* The lead at the start is handled by Nicodemus with the acoustic and the Ice Maiden doing the rhythm.
* After a time, the electric guitars swap roles.
* The swoopier lead and high notes moves to the Ice Maiden while Nicodemus takes the heavier rhythm.
* The ‘verses’ are an F# major chord rooted on the second fret, with the B and hi-E strings open, then E minor.
* Chords involving fretted notes with harmonics are F#11 and E minor.
* Although Serendipity starts in the key of F# (the very first note is E), it ends on a B minor.
* The tempo is a determined 136 BPM.

Fun Facts:
* Aeroplane is a guitar piece in a non-standard tuning – DADFCE.
* A man called Hum showed George this tuning at party in Exeter in about 1994 or 1995.
* Lovely as it was, George found it very hard to write something within its confines until late 1996.
* Aeroplane was the first tune George wrote upon moving to Prague, near the Pražského Povstání metro station.
* He says “There wasn’t too much else to do when I first got there, with just an acoustic and the World Service for company.”
* Phil the Fiddle played some lovely soaring thermals during the frequent Doctor Watson performances on Karlov Most.
* When it was time to record Aeroplane, no fiddle player was available.
* Lucy stepped in and did much the same kind of thing on her 150-year-old blonde cello, which shook the whole room with its magnificence.
* George drew inpiration for this piece from his first ever flight, looking down on London and the clouds for the first time.
* He describes the flight as “being on this big metal thing that I couldn’t possibly lift, held in the sky with magic.”
* Aeroplane is dedicated to Jana “Sweet Jane” Koubova, who helped with the Czech language and was George’s first native Czech friend.

Fun Facts:
* Week Five is a tune that George wrote around the time of his TESOL course in the spring of 1996.
* It was a four week course, so Week Five is all the stuff that happens to you as a teacher after completing that initial course of training.
* The sound of the train was recorded on the cassette recorder George hauled around Prague for teaching.
* He left it running on a journey from his room at the Hotel Opatov to the office of his school, English House, in Albertov, in order to capture some ambient sounds of the city.
* Week Five is essentially a two-chord tune – F# minor and E.
* The tempo is 135 BPM.
* There are five ‘verses’ to Week Five, one for each week.
* As the piece progresses, each ‘verse’ becomes a little more intense than the previous one.
* The fourth and fifth verses are slightly longer than the first three.
* The fourth week involved a great deal of work, so that deserved an extra few bars.
* The fifth week represents the rest of one’s life after the course is finished, which hopefully is longer than four weeks.
* Week Five is dedicated to the guinea-pig students at Sidmouth International School in Spring 1996 – Sandi, Tammi, Keiko, Myrtle and Dilek, and tutor Vincent, as well as the other trainees, tutors and students.
* A little credit must go to Adi Celestine for defining the ending.
* In a perfect world this tune would have been 5:05 minutes in length.
* 505 was the number of the night bus, or the “magic bus”, that would take George back to Opatov after a night of revelry in Prague.
* The acoustic guitar rhythm gives the tune a train-ish vibe.
* The percussion and latin feel were intended to make the piece appear more cosmopolitan.
* Due to lack of space on the CD, the soundscape at the beginning was drastically curtailed.
* This was a shame as it took ages to make the panning and editing just right.
* Pražského Povstání was chosen because that metro station was very close to where George lived to begin with, before moving out to Opatov.

Fun Facts:
* Farsight is the oldest piece on the album At Least 1000 Words.
* It is a piece that George wrote around March 1995, during the days of The Ug Brothers.
* Any recordings of the original have been lost to the vortices of time and the land of refugee cassettes – the Tape Void, as the Ug drummer Graham used to call it.
* Originally there were words for it too.
* These lyrics described the kingdoms of the mind, those inner spaces, places and temples; the mythology of the self that begins in early childhood, a mysterious and magical place that is a sanctuary where only you can go, a place that is reachable in the blink of an eye yet can be so far, far away in space, time and reality.
* This place never really allows any other individual, however close a relationship and understanding they may have with you, ‘access all areas’ – perhaps for the best, as we all need our own castle to retreat to occasionally.
* Farsight is dedicated to that very world that exists within all of us, our private fantasy space, where we go in our dreamtime, and the place from where art comes or is filtered through to us from the farside perhaps, and the zone you are in when you are ‘in the zone’.
* Dave then wrote some other more Ug-like words.
* The only two that can be recalled are “wondering why”.
* The Ug Brothers disbanded before the song was ever performed live.
* This was a great shame as Farsight was one of the band’s collective favourites and one of the last new pieces they worked upon.
* We have been unable to dig up any Ug Brothers recordings of Farsight.
* Natalie, the Ug singer, came up with a vocal melody for the lost lyrics penned by Dave.
* A small fragment of that melody remains, in the very beginning of the lead guitar part, the rest again vanished forever to the realms of nilspace.
* This instrumental version of Farsight seemed to be a convenient resolution.
* In as many ways as possible it is largely true to the original Ug Brothers version.
* The piece begins in G minor but ends in C major and runs at 120 bpm.
* That was exactly the speed of the rhythm of the bridge on the USS Enterprise in the first Star Trek series, a sound which we used from the website www.stinsv.com, and just seemed perfect by its synchronicity.
* As the piece begins you can hear a Klingon door opening, from the same site – to let you in.
* Flicker tried to get the sound of a motor race into the soundscape, but it didn’t work so was left out.
* The percussion is probably not so different from the original played by Graham, again lost to the mists of time.
* Dave certainly delayed coming in with the full drumkit to the exact same point as The Ug Brothers.
* Dave’s beautifully expressive and critically acclaimed bassline, played on the Fender, was what drove and made the piece distinct.
* All the guitar parts are played on the Ice Maiden apart from the lead line, which was recorded using Nicodemus.

Fun facts:
* This version of Crash is essenially identical to the oher version on the Signmaker album, except for one extra track on the reel-to-reel machine.
* This extra track is full of EastEnders voice samples and some raher flaulent sounds from the EDP Wasp.
* All the samples were taken from a single omnibus episode of EastEnders, which was broadcast on uk terrestrial TV in December 1991.
* The sampling was done using the Alesis Quadraverb Plus, which has a maximum sample length of just 1.55 seconds.
* Crash was Alien Heat’s set opener, although sadly no recordings of the Alien Heat version still exist as far as we know.
* The key is B minor.
* When George went to entertain the folks of Plymouth in the subways with his acoustic guitar, he used to play Crash sliced together with another Dark Company song called Ulysses.
* Ulysses was not developed very much by Alien Heat.
* Pete then lost the lyrics.
* The music for Ulysses later became an Ug Brothers song, called Paperchase.
* Crash was the very first song that Jeff played bass on for Dark Company.
* All the guitar dirt is natural Marshall overdrive.
* George had just had his Mk I head revalved and spent around 45 minutes playing feedback, until Pete appeared and asked him very politely to stop.
* The guitar parts for Crash were recorded within a few days after that.
* George and Richard wrote the organ part in George’s Haldon Road bedsit one day, when Richard came to visit with his keyboards.
* Whatever contributions Marc and Graham made to the writing of Crash are now lost in the mists of time, although they receive a small credit here nevertheless.

Goodstaff were Silverton’s finest post-punk extreme sports band of the late nineties and early noughties.

Goodstaff were an awesome live band. Besides creating a most joyous hullabaloo on stage, they were visually one of the most interesting bands of their time and sounded unlike any other act in the south west. Many of their songs were about subjects such as snowboarding and the winter sports lifestyle and some of their songs were used on snowboarding videos.

Frontman Ross Martin was the main songwriter and provides all the guitars and main vocals that you can hear, including some rather interesting and unusual stomp-box effects. He played his guitar slung so low you would think that his knuckles must drag along the ground when he walked. Mik E played the keys, sang backing vocals and provided a lot of stage presence and psychotic uber-geek strangeness and digital waveform finery.

Goodstaff had one of the finest rhythm sections around. John Thornhill was an awesome drummer and highly visual, especially during Superstitious White or Black which was mostly in seven time. Ant Barron on five-string bass also had a great stage presence with his facial hair and piercings and numerous coloured contact lenses. He also provided backing vocals and acted superbly as a dry foil to Ross’s on-stage wit.

Despite a couple of years of success playing the south of England and developing a formidable reputation for their live shows, which had a much bigger and far more powerful sound than these recordings, the band ground to a halt when Ross failed to return from a snowboarding holiday in New Zealand. As far as we know, he is still there.

Promise the World, from Ride That Fantasy by Recluse.

This is the 2001 album Ride That Fantasy by Devon trio Recluse.

Sadly we have no information accompanying this album called Ride That Fantasy by Recluse, other than the track titles and the name of the band, Recluse.

We are fairly sure that it is Alex Painter on guitar and vocals and writing most of the material, although as to whether or not Chris White and Tim Desmond provide the bass and drums (or more, or less) and other such detail remains largely mysterious. It sounds as if Alex played a baritone guitar, or at least tuned one of his guitars down somewhat, for some of the songs.

We like Recluse a lot and hope its members are still making great music somewhere, somehow.

Recluse were a three piece band from Devon who wrote the most disarmingly haunting and powerful songs. They were three of the most polite and unassuming young men if you met any of them, yet when put on a stage with some instruments to play they produced the most gloriously demonic musical cacophony.

The main songwriter in Recluse was Alex Painter (guitar, vocals) and when he left the area to study music at Salford the band seemed to grind to a halt. This was a great shame as he was one of the most accomplished young rock musicians and composers in Devon. Chris White played bass and Tim Desmond drums to complete the line-up.

As far as we know, the band made just two albums – Propaganda in 2000 and Ride That Fantasy in 2001. We hope you enjoy listening to the music of Recluse as much as we still do, even after all these years.

We found this demo amongst our archives and felt it deserved to be shared, along with a somewhat incomplete biographical history of the band Dayglow based on our memories.

First up, it's important to say that we have no information accompanying the demo CD. All that is written on the CD is 'Dayglow' and 'Grain of Sand'.

Dayglow were without a doubt the most improved band in the Torbay area during the 18 month (or so) period with which we were familiar with that whole scene. The live music scene in Torbay just after the turn of the millenium was fantastic. This was largely thanks to The Live Stage, run by Joe and Mel at The Hideaway - and another orange venue in around the corner in Market Street, for a couple of months before the Hideaway became home for all the live music shenanigans that went on every week.

Dayglow started out as a three-piece grunge band. These recordings are almost certainly from their early days. Their first show was at the orange Market Street venue, and they played support to another act, possibly Murdock or Kickdown or Outcast or Torna-K, who were all quite big on the scene at the time. Also on the bill were Parafinalia and Goodstaff. Goodstaff played every week and opened the proceedings.

The first Dayglow performance we witnessed was not particularly spectacular, apart from one highly memorable comedy moment. There was a song they tried to play that involved a somewhat twiddly riff on the bass, and during the first three or four attempts the string on which the riff was being played kept popping out of the nut of the bass, so the poor bass player had to replace it and try again.

After several attempts, the guitarist, singer and frontman of Parafinalia stepped up to hold the recalcitrant string in position, and continued to do so for the remainder of the rendition of that particular number. He held it in place rather firmly, effectively putting a massive bend on the whole string, so it was entirely out of tune with the rest of the band. The two of them cavorted awkwardly around the stage in a weird comical dance, like conjoined twins in a 19th century cabaret or two wounded beetles trying bravely to reproduce. The few of us that noticed what was going on found it hilarious. At the end of the song, the assistant was warmly thanked and Dayglow continued with their set.

Dayglow played the Live Stage two or three more times after that, each performance better than the previous, as the band grew tighter and more accomplished as they gained experience. The last time we saw them, they had grown to a four-piece, having added a second guitarist. This latest performance was fantastic. The band probably had the best sound of any performance anybody ever gave at any of the Live Stage shows that we can remember.

There was one other thing that was rather striking about Dayglow. Their bass player was ludicrously tall. There were several extremely tall bass players for some reason at that time on that scene, and Dayglow's was probably the tallest.

The following information was provided to us by Myke, the band’s drummer.

Later on Rob Duncan joined Dayglow on guitar and eventually the band changed their name to After The Blackout.

Myke and Ross carried on together with another band, which was a continued evolution of Dayglow, called Drawn On Empty Faces. That lasted until 2009, when Ross gave up on playing music.

* Fortunately no data was lost due to our cunning back-up strategies.
* When we made the original demo of this song, it just had a chugging guitar to keep Pete in key and on time.
* In the demo version the bass continued on for a time after the vocal and guitar, playing the gappy riff and the rhythms.
* The ‘chug’ was replaced here by the twin lead parts, which together with the bass make up the major and minor triads that form the original chord progression (more or less).
* The original had an electronic kit which needs to make a reappearance somewhere.
* The lyric to this suggests the perspective of an older person looking back at his life and the pains associated with that.
* Perhaps the older we become, the better we can relate.

Due to brexshit, broken britain, rip-off britain, corruption, lies and bias in the media, bigotry, racism, intolerance, polarisation, the fact that some of our family members would not be allowed to remain post-brexit, state-sponsored child trafficking (yes, that's right, we said it - it's pretty shocking, start reading from here if you don't believe it: https://forced-adoption.com/), an increasing sense of frustration and exasperation, and general total weariness of being treated with nothing but derision, ignorance and contempt by the entire shebang since the early 80s, we decided enough was enough and moved our entire operation from brexeter in the uk to begin our grand brexodus in 2017. We are now brefugees, living in brexile very near the border of the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. If you live in (the crumbling remains of) the uk, do yourself a favour and leave. The upgrade in life quality will blow your mind.

* What do we stand for as a label?

We support all independent musicians who are doing something we find interesting. Our team members all have formal music education qualifications.

We are against corporate brainwash muzak, their puppet friends in the mass media, and many other corporate activities. We will fight their desecration of music until either it stops or we die. 

We believe in helping others in the face of corrupt laws and a broken system. We are pro democracy, green energy and free speech.

We're politically liberal. We cannot support the republicans, maga or gun violence in the usa. We don't see there's any real difference, other than in name, between the christian far right in the USA and the taliban in Afghanistan.

In the uk we are broadly pro LibDem/Green/Labour/SNP. We are VERY anti-tory, bnp, ukip, and any of their friends and associates. We have no trust at all in the uk right wing press monopoly and the bbc. Beware the bbc and its claims of neutrality. It is the propaganda mouthpiece of the tory party. It even charges a propaganda tax called the licence fee. But we like Test Match Special and Radio 6, so does that make us hypocrites...? Hmm.

We support independence for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Cornwall. We support the individual and the underdog. We are anti-putin and his war, and pro-Ukraine.
