You know that whenever Sam and Jessa (m i n o r) spend time together in the studio, the result will be smooth, refreshing arrangements that carry lots of feels and soft melodies through vocals and multiple instruments melding beautifully. Since this duo project was born, they have held down the melodic, indie-electronic side of things here at WUMP with a slew of incredible singles, remixes, and covers that carved their own niche in the Denver music scene. We were thrilled to hear that they teamed up with talented friend and musical colleague, Sarah Mount, to bring some warm saxophone elements into 'Always Falling.'

'Always Falling' definitely carries the heart and soul in its carefully crafted melodies and resonant lyrics (as always), and we are so excited to finally share these 3 songs with you all. You'll hear that classic m i n o r sound with fresh future bass and soothing, chilled out vibes, but it certainly doesn't stop there. You'll also get to hear what can happen when you bring a brilliant saxophonist into the equation. The magic is REAL with these 3 working together, and we even get into some higher energy with the EP's final track, "Break Me Open", showing just how special this group is.

We are thrilled to release this immersive sonic journey into the wild, which could be illanthropy's most impressive project to date. 'Headfirst' takes us deep into the potency of the human condition with its full-bodied sound, embodying the multifaceted journey of transitions and self-discovering changes that occur in our lives. This project spans across various genres and moods, ranging stylistically from deep UK-style dubstep to melodic, immersive pieces, even featuring a raunchy drum n bass tune. Overall, the project rounds out a deeply satisfying and meaningful listening experience, offering an opportunity to look inside yourself and feel what you need to feel.

"For me, Headfirst was meant to emulate the crazy combination of simultaneous emotions one feels when going through a major transition in their lives. Those feelings of confusion, unsure of the next step because the next step is straight into the vast unknown. That moment of weakness where you try to convince yourself to sit tight in your complacency. That brief moment where you say FUCK IT and close your eyes, ready to jump without thinking about it. The seemingly surreal feeling of drifting in and out, straight down into something you've never experienced. I wanted to capture all of this, and really dive into my own emotions as I, myself, deal with major transitions and try my best to just "be myself" in every moment. A lot of this music is new for me, it's adventurous and unrelenting and doesn't care how you feel as it whips your mind around into unexplored territory. That's what I want people to feel when they listen, and when that last sonic bit tapers off at the end, I want people to feel more comfortable in their own skin, in their own mind, even if it's for just a moment. I feel like we are sharing that experience in that moment."

Prepare to get Entangled in the minds of Stan and Scatz.  

Here's what each of them has to say about "Entangled":

Stan (Sam Goodman): 
“The idea to name the track ‘Entangled’ stemmed from the concept of two artists weaving ideas together to form one whole, complete piece.  It can be viewed as entangled in terms of ideas, but also sonic qualities, like how my end of this project was mostly the acoustic end while Mitch took care of most of the digital elements.”

Scatz (Mitch Bilodeau): 
“And me being me, it's difficult to avoid my inner science nerd that also associates entanglement with quantum physics and the laws of our universe. This idea that two independent particles can entangle and then share properties regardless of how close together they are is thought-provoking and inspiring. I find it kind of related to how Sam and I worked together on this track --separated by the distance between our homes, but still bringing our individual visions together to one cohesive piece that plays back and forth within itself.”


While Stan & Scatz each have very distinct, unique sounds, their fusion is an entirely different animal altogether.  Individually, they each thrive in the realm of melodic bass music, utilizing their skills as multi-instrumentalists to record organic, original melodies on a multitude of different instruments.  It’s no surprise, then, that their collaboration follows suit and delivers a refreshing dose of originality and musicality.

“Entangled” begins with a simple acoustic guitar melody that eases the listener into a space of thoughtful contemplation, utilizing the silence between the notes to create a feeling of spaciousness.  A second guitar eventually joins in and fills those spaces with complementary plucks in a higher octave, formulating the melody that will drive the rest of the song.  Now comes the fun part- a beat comes in with creatively-timed bass kicks and enough low end to vibrate your ear wax into a slimy paste.  The way the sub-bass rolls through different frequencies and intensities makes the listener feel as though he is riding a roller coaster, as the subtle shifts and crescendos create depth and shape within the soundscape.  

“Entangled” progresses and evolves as additional layers and melodies are introduced, demonstrating the vision and technical skill of these two top-notch producers.  Grab your free download and share!

Stan & Scatz - Entangled

The second track on the EP is called ‘Within, Never Without’, and it will hit you right in the feels.  Beginning with an ethereal & melodic intro, it lulls the listener into a realm of nostalgic melancholy with the distorted vocals crying out for something seemingly out of reach.  Just before the drop, we hear the words “I’ll stand with you forever” which cut straight through to the heart and open us up for the flood of emotion that pours in a few seconds later.  When it drops, you will inevitably feel yourself swaying to the pulse of the driving kick drum, absorbing the emotion pouring out of the speakers.  It’s beautiful and melodic in a really interesting, unconventional way, while also containing enough punch in the low end to make it a dancefloor mind-melter.  

Here's what illanthropy has to say about ‘Within, Never Without’:

“This song, I believe, is a manifestation of the feeling (that I'm sure many of us share) of longing for something greater, always.  I'm sure that there are lots of beautiful, happy people who have gotten to a point in their lives where they want nothing/need nothing above and beyond what they have, and I envy these people greatly!  But part of my mission in music is to spread a message of acceptance, love, and power to my fans and anyone who comes to a show, and it's important to me to spread this message as widely and deeply as I can.   So, I will always want something bigger, louder, heavier, deeper with a larger audience to connect with.  I see how negative and unhealthy parts of this scene are becoming and I think it is bastardized by larger media outlets as a problem with the music rather than a problem with our mindset, because the music is just that: music.  The way we experience it and what we do with it are completely up to us, and I've almost succumbed to the fun, carefree lifestyle of non-stop partying, drugs, drinking, etc. and now that I'm at a point in my life where I can reflect on myself at that time, this message resonates more deeply with me and I believe with my audience too.  The way people connect at electronic music shows is so profound, like we are all being hit at the same time by a huge tidal wave of empathy.  We are powerful creatures with capacity to do so much good, and I will forever believe in humanity to do good. I just want to catalyze that a bit.”

illanthropy - Within, Never Without

‘Humble Star’ kicks the EP off, slowly luring the listener into a futuristic, shimmering atmosphere of potentiality.  It adds several complex rhythms that quickly build up some light tension and get things moving, continuing to build and build, as though you’re speeding through a futuristic city in a hover car at dusk.  The tension is released when the drop comes in, immediately creating an air of warmth and spaciousness, as illanthropy masterfully uses pauses and spaciousness to empower the synth melody.  Those warm synths carry this section, gradually adding subtleties that drive the song forward and keep it dynamic all the way through.  ‘Humble Star’ demonstrates that you don’t need over-the-top heaviness to get a crowd moving, and that simplicity can end up being the most powerful.  This is a song that you can listen to over and over on repeat, and find something new that hooks you each time.  

Here’s what illanthropy has to say about ‘Humble Star’:

“When I was writing ‘Humble Star’, I was in a strange transition of success.  I went from being a completely unrecognized DJ to releasing songs on @MalLabelMusic in less than a year, and it was easily the biggest leap I had ever made.  I am deeply humbled by my recent successes and that is not a feeling I want lost in my ego somewhere down the line.  This song is about relativity in terms of us (human beings) and our relationship to the external and internal.  Everything in the universe is made up of elements created by stars, stars literally create the universe. I believe at any given moment we are both the most significant and least significant beings in the process of reality.  We create our external realities by imposing our internal realities on them.  We create the universe, but we should never lose the feeling of being humbled and taken away by the great mystery.  This applies to my experience in the music industry, seeing all of these prima donna, self-absorbed DJs who promote getting wasted and partying non-stop.  I don't want to speak badly of anyone, AND I love to party (obviously) but these visceral experiences allow us to re-center ourselves and focus on our intellectual endeavors, whether that be making music or running a food co-op.  There is a balance here, just as there should be with our perceived significance/ego.”

In case you haven't noticed, we love atmospheric, immersive bass music that feels alive and breathing, so we’re very excited to present today’s release: ‘Death Stroke’ by Nocturnal Status and Dillard. 

‘Death Stroke’ is a powerful example of bass music with substance and meaning, immediately establishing its tangible world of sound and setting the stage for the journey that’s about to ensue. We begin with a smooth, laid-back lounge atmosphere, evoking a sense of melancholy and longing that one would experience during a solo late night drive through a city. Subtle synth melodies arise and dissipate, almost echoing the effect that sirens would have as they travel through the caliginous night air, enhancing the feeling of desolation in one’s being. The song gradually builds, eventually morphing into a dark masterpiece with some of the most delicious, aggressive growls around.

Nocturnal Status & Dillard - Death Stroke

Today’s release is a real humdinger, as DeeZ and tsimba make their WUMP debut with their new single, “Banditos.” This one is short and sweet, and you’ll find yourself hitting repeat because, well, let’s face it: once is never enough when it comes to the music of these two bass wizards.  We start off running right out of the gates with futuristic, playful synths atop an ominous bass build, setting the stage for the madness that’s about to ensue. 

The synths after the drops are arranged with inflections that strikingly resemble human speech, creating a feeling of dialogue between an anthropomorphized bass entity and swarms of enemies locked in combat. Using the title as justification, let’s break the song into two halves, the two Banditos. The first Bandito comes into a combat scenario as a lone warrior who may have bitten off more than he can chew. Badass and meaning business, he comes out swinging with his energy high and confidence in his movements. We hear him start to lose this fire and eventually the enemies (represented by the sporadic snare hits) fight back enough to drive the Bandito into a strategic withdrawal. 

Will the Bandito give up, broken and defeated? 

The answer to this question is teased in the breakdown that comes next, where we hear the familiar futuristic blips flowing through the Bandito, as if charging him up for round 2. With an extended build and suspense high, we feel the energy surging and swelling through the Bandito as the sweeping growls pull us back into the scene. Finally, the drop releases the Bandito from his previous form, ascending to his next level Bandito form, as a Saiyan would ascend to Super Saiyan. His newfound power is immediately evident as the lower octave synths here carry a heavier weight of power and unspoken confidence that leave no doubt in our minds that this Bandito will slay dance floors without remorse.

4.)	Cut Rugs – Snicka (illanthropy Remix)
Wait, wait.. illanthropy remixed a @CutRugs song?! Yeah, we had the same initial reaction too. This one shows off illanthropy’s ability to manipulate vocals and use downtempo vibes to create a sense of melancholy and an almost ethereal atmosphere, while also incorporating heavier elements and rhythm manipulation to drive it home. We’re blown away by this style coming from illanthropy, and it really just further proves that he’s a force to be reckoned with. Filtered and chopped vocals, lovely chime melodies, and a sexy beat make this a track you’ll keep coming back to on those late night drives.

1.)	Chasing Ghosts
“Who comin’ with that big sound baby?” We kick off ‘Daycrawler’ with ‘Chasing Ghosts’, which has an extended introduction that sets the emotional tone for the rest of the EP to follow. We feel the familiarity of the nostalgic longing, as we chase something that is long gone and question whether or not it ever actually was. A false build-up tricks us, and it releases into a breakdown consisting of a melody played by some distorted mystery string instrument, really allowing us to soak up the emotion and sit in that space.. if only for a moment. Quickly it builds back up and what comes next is beyond comprehension or expectation. As a way to cut away that emotional tie to the past through sheer energy and intensity, what follows is the heaviest drop you can imagine while still remaining tasteful and cohesive with the rest of the song.

FunkStatik - This Way

We currently find ourselves in the strangely beautiful month of October, the annual period within the temporal field that inevitably allows our wEiRd to rise to the surface like the dark cream of our souls. The whole WUMP Collective family shares a common love for Halloween season, as it tends to bring out the wild, uninhibited creative side of our artists, allowing us to truly let our freak fly without holding back. Plus, with the leaves changing and the ‘sweatshirt optional’ weather emerging, we’re reminded to reflect on impermanence and the cyclical nature of things. It’s a powerful time of year, no doubt, but without getting too serious and philosophical, let’s have some fun.

Today’s release is all about relishing in the darkness and channeling it into art that “Comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable” (Cesar A. Cruz). To kick off the spooky season, we’ve got a slightly disturbing track from our pal Levitation Jones and his cohort, Chark, that embodies the sinister beauty of this time of year. This is the WUMP debut for each of these fellas, which we’re very excited about, and let’s just say it’ll be a memorable one for all of us.

‘Goose Leg’ begins with quick intro, introducing a synth that sounds like a cross between a cyber flute and a cosmic horn of the underworld, immediately pulling us out into the deep waters. We’re sent soaring into the abyss when the bass comes in, riding a wave of dissonance and orderly chaos into uncharted sonic and textural territory. ‘Goose Leg’ plays a myriad of tricks on the mind and soul as the womping, stomping bass engulfs us in its unrelenting grasp, pulsing and throbbing in the low end without a shred of mercy. The haunting dissonance of the lead synth seems to call out for help, resembling human speech in its inflections and personified pitch changes. Constantly growing and swelling, it carries us through utter absurdity and relentless oddity until it breaks in the middle.. if only for a moment. Quickly again we’re lifted up for a second dose of heaviness, this time even bigger and badder with the low end wobbling us into oblivion and the mystery synth breaking our brains in the best way. ‘Goose Leg’ is surely a track that will delight, confuse, and amuse crowds as it fills their audio receptacles with thought-provoking, movement-inducing vibrations.

Levitation Jones & Chark - Goose Leg

We’ve got a special treat for you on this WUMP Wednesday, so shut out the noise of the world and press play. 

The fusion of @Pi-Wrecks & @RecycledFunk is a match made in electro-soul heaven, and despite the song title, the love for these musicians is burning HOT in our hearts. Recycled Funk’s iconic guitar licks and saxophone accents blend seamlessly with Pi Wrecks’ signature textures, resulting in a piece that tells a story of longing through sheaths of blue emotion. Time and time again, Pi Wrecks creates art that aims to convey a mood or emotion to foster human connection, focusing on the journey instead of “the big drop.” Combining this depth of emotion with the brilliant instrumentation of Recycled Funk, “Love Has Died” takes us inward and invites us to FEEL. Subtle progressions carry us into the different sections, layering instrumentation and crescendoing bass textures to sneakily get your whole body moving as the purposeful percussion hits home. When the instrument melodies temporarily dissolve into the background toward the end, we’re given an experimental climax of glitchy bassy goodness that’ll bring a smile to your face in cathartic release.

Pi Wrecks & Recycled Funk - Love Has Died

Opia (noun) – the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable – their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque – as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there’s someone standing there, but unable to tell if you’re looking in or looking out. 

Music with a message. It’s what we’ve built our foundation upon, using our artistic abilities to attempt to convey deeper, unspeakable truths. Today’s release represents the realization that everyone you meet is living a life as complex and challenging as your own, which catalyzes a new level of compassion for those we encounter. Every pair of eyes you stare into reflects an entirely unique universe, as every person has a unique lens through which they perceive the world based on their own life experiences, traumas, relationships, and beliefs (whether their own or the ones they’ve been conditioned into believing). Understanding this fact is paramount to reducing the polarity we find ourselves in, for in this space we can begin to see past the individual differences that had previously kept our hearts closed off. Can you look into another’s eyes and let the silence connect you more deeply than words? Will you allow yourself to open up and rest in that space with another? For many of us, the feeling of vulnerability overwhelms and makes us look down at the ground as we wall up a barrier around our hearts. We fear that opening ourselves to another will lead to more suffering and heartbreak, and we’ve already been through enough pain to let that happen again. We project our own vulnerability and insecurity onto others, which makes us feel as though we’re violating and invading their space, when in reality the eyes staring back at you could be yearning for connection.  

This message is a potent one, and these two musicians have really created something special here with “Opia.” Throughout the song we’re moved by a bittersweet melody, one that paradoxically embodies both melancholy and cautious optimism, a fittingly complex and multi-faceted portrayal of the feeling that is “Opia.” This melody is carried by Cesium Swimsuit’s guitar at first, but it morphs and wears several hats throughout the song. It’s as though the melody is slowly revealed to us little by little as we move through its different incarnations, with the iconic Scatz synths building on the melody to elevate it, and its piano embodiment shifting us into a different perspective. The tasteful gritty textures emerge and subside to enhance the melody’s penetrating power, as the low end frequencies create space to allow introspection. Both of these musicians utilize the power of subtle progression in their music, so it’s no surprise that we’re taken on a stimulating and contemplative ride as the story unfolds.

Glass Cannon - Tipping Point (illanthropy Remix)

Presenting: ‘CHAOS/Clarity’, the newest EP from @illanthropymusic. 

This EP plays with the ever-present, often subtle dance of duality. Just as it is true that we would not know light without darkness and we would not know true pleasure unless we had felt deep pain, the experience of clarity could not arise without its counterpart: chaos. This poignant mandala of chaos/clarity penetrates our lives primarily through our thoughts and emotions, with chaos embodying the bombardment of negative thought patterns that ultimately lead to feelings of frustration and hostility. We find our awareness drawn to chaos like moths to a flame, whether on a personal scale or a global scale, focusing on the blatant corruption, turmoil, and pain that’s all around us in a peripherally blind society. These days there is certainly no shortage of chaos sources, so we feel it’s crucial to address the internal experiences we’re all sharing to carve a path of clarity through the chaos. Although our awareness is often pulled simultaneously in multiple directions and our emotions are heavily charged, there remains a piece of ourselves underneath the chaos that watches it all play out. Through conscious effort, this seed of clarity can be tapped into and cultivated as it expands and deepens.  

The front half of this EP represents the CHAOS we’ve been discussing, beginning with a tongue-in-cheek tip of the hat to mass media. The intro to ‘BLUESCREEN’ features an ominously morphed series of voices as we flip through television stations to hear the various harbingers of doom that call themselves newscasters. The voices fade out as the background frequencies come to the forefront, and the journey begins.. In his uniquely cinematic way, illanthropy introduces movement as the build-up ensues and gradually intensifies, making the arm-hairs stand up when we realize we’re in for a hell of a ride when it drops. With potential energy maxed out to capacity, the drop sends us soaring through a field of gritty textures and menacing static as the powerful bass frequencies drive our bodies to movement. 

‘FL4BB3RG4ST3D’ offers a more playful embodiment of chaos, while still maintaining a deliciously uneasy feeling. Once it drops, the lead synth resembles a human voice in its inflections, bringing to mind the hostile, polarized back-and-forth that arises on social media platforms between aggressors on either side of a sociopolitical issue. Thanks to anonymity and gaslighting, we succumb to spewing out ad hominem attacks as our words fall on deaf ears and the polarization intensifies, embodied creatively by this song. 

Chaos gives way to Clarity as we move into the back half of this EP, and it’s an instant moment of cleansing as ‘Clarity’ begins with its ethereal intro. We breathe a sigh of relief as the comforting frequencies lull us into a calmer state of mind, feeling the energy subtly building through a thick atmosphere of hope before a powerful moment of silence. Perhaps illanthropy’s most emotionally evocative song to date, ‘Clarity’ truly embodies its namesake: that feeling of spaciousness and grounded optimism which cuts through the swirling chaos. The eyes instinctively close down as we allow ourselves to surrender and melt into the sound, shifting our attention inward. 

The final piece of this puzzle maintains the Clarity previously established, and takes us even further to show us the Light.. Where It Should Be. This is the 3rd collaboration between @illanthropymusic and @WiZ0, and it hits a much different vibe than their other collabs. ‘Light Where It Should Be’ opens us up to the glimmering possibilities that arise through clarity, with a more chilled out, dream-like feel that progresses through melty pulsations to drive us toward motivated action.

Scatz - Flow Like Fire

Presenting: “Rock Like This”, the WUMP debut from @plzBlastfome and @U-L-K. 

This one’s a certified heater, folks, so strap yourselves in. Beginning with an ominously powerful beat atop a clip of an interview with Elvis Presley about the state of rock ‘n’ roll, Blastfome and ULK take us back in time for a quick second before sending us soaring into the future. Just as rock ‘n’ roll was devious and cutting edge for its time, we now seem to be experiencing a similar paradigm shift as bass music continues to grow and evolve, gaining more attention as a counter-culture. In this song we hear the sample of a skeptic asking, “What is this crazy ‘rock and roll’ music anyway?” before the drop, representing the resistance felt whenever a new style of music emerges into the cultural landscape. I’m sure we’ve all had the conversation with members of the Baby Boomer generation where they say, “Electronic music isn’t real music. You kids don’t know real music”, as they look back to the glory days of rock ‘n’ roll, forgetting that the same claims were made against rock ‘n’ roll during its birth. It’s just a cyclical, recurring pattern that has happened as long as art has been around, and will surely continue as the times progress, so we say f*ck it. You don’t need to justify and explain why you love certain kinds of art more than others. Enjoy what you enjoy and let the music take control.  

This is perfectly embodied by the sequence before the drop: “What is this crazy ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ music, anyway?” …..”Uh, I don’t know..” This simple dismissal of explanation coupled with the pure silliness of how heavy the drop is makes us smile, because it invites the listener to stop thinking and just get dowwwnnnn with the heavy bass frequencies. Blastfome and ULK take us through some immersive, full bodied gnar that keeps us groovin’ as it moves us into the different sections, building in intensity as it goes along. With each drop, we’re invited to surrender more and more until our bodies are essentially just flopping around and flailing as a big, cheesy grin forms on our faces.

You know that whenever Sam and Jessa (m i n o r) spend time together in the studio, the result will lead to lots of feels and soft melodies through vocals and multiple instruments melding beautifully. Since this duo project was born, they have held down the melodic, indie-electronic side of things here at WUMP with a slew of incredible singles, remixes, and covers that carved their own niche in the Denver music scene. We were thrilled to hear that they teamed up with talented friend and musical colleague, Sarah Mount, to bring some warm saxophone elements into 'Always Falling.'

'Always Falling' definitely carries the heart and soul in its carefully crafted melodies and resonant lyrics (as always), and we are so excited to finally share these 3 songs with you all. You'll hear that classic m i n o r sound with smooth future bass and soothing, chilled out vibes, but it certainly doesn't stop there. You'll also get to hear what can happen when you bring a brilliant saxophonist into the equation. The magic is REAL with these 3 working together, and we even get into some higher energy with the EP's final track, "Break Me Open", showing just how special this group is.
