Debut album of the hip-hop producer/mc duo Trans.formation (Essential I and me) - a collection of tracks created between the years of 2004 and 2010. 
2014 marks a decade long journey of completion in the cycle of 100% independent, organically created, avant garde, purely hip-hop music.  

All instrumentals were produced and all vocals were recorded prior to 2010, and the 4 proceeding years have been spent balancing the trials and challenges of everyday life with mixing, mastering, innovating and upgrading the works for their imminent release.  

This project represents not only a musical, but also a human metamorphosis. Symbolizing growth and change. Although the tracks are a bit older, they are far from outdated and in fact remain mostly relevant today.

Wunderflo (producer) on the song:
This is the 5th song I have ever produced, and the 2nd of the Trans.formation tracks which have made it on the album. The production of the beat took place mainly in 2005 and was completed relatively quickly. Its recipe is as simple as the outcome sounds like. Mix a hot summer in Spain with cool drinks, a swimming pool and the refreshing breeze of the Mediterranean, and you get a mellow, sweet, funky instrumental. In other words; “summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” 
Chilling under the sun, there’s nothing better than listening to a specific type of rap music that, in the words of Essential I, has “the Midas touch, giving you a golden feeling”. This way, the sound was also inspired by the theme of Dead Prez’ “Be Healthy”, the style of Mos Def’s “New World Water”, the melodiousness of Camp Lo’s “Black Connection”, the mood of Lost Boyz’ “Love, Peace & Nappiness”, the rhythm of Timbaland, the sonic aesthetic of The Neptunes and the instrumentation of G-Funk (especially the Rhodes on Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Doggfather”).

Most important of all, the song is the best example for the joy and benefit of collaborating. The only time I jammed with another producer live in the same room was a session with Electronic Marshall Beats aka JamD, who on this occasion provided the strings-sample. You can hear it most prominently during the last half of the 2nd verse. It is an absolutely defining and constitutive element of the tune. 
In terms of content, all credit belongs to the lyricists Essential I, Huckleberry plus the Sunz of Sound MCs iNsite and our dearly departed friend Joey P, who transitioned within a year or two of this recording. Thanks to them, the song goes beyond the fun metaphors for being fresh, by humorously addressing and promoting organic healthy food and farming. I just love it, when Sunz of Sound interrupt the song in order to eat “some salad with a little spinach”, and by that combine amazing skills with a great sense of humor. If your kids think, eating veggies is uncool, play them this song!

On the one hand, this is a song we did just for fun, inspired by childhood memories. I guess, we tend to get nostalgic now and then. In addition, we simply love the revolutionary spirit of Pippi Longstocking and everything she stands for. Today’s world definitely should take a page from her book, or better yet, internalize Astrid Lindgren’s entire book!

On the other hand, this track gives you the full, undiluted Trans.formation experience - namely a playful, moody, melodious, and most importantly, diversified mix of samples and own compositions including some pretty complex and sophisticated parts. The typical Trans.formation moment of surprise can be witnessed during the middle part, when the instrumental takes off and breaks loose, accompanied by Alex Sandunga’s vivid, electric and versatile rap, which suits the beat incredibly fine.

Lyrically, Essential I upholds Pippi’s spiritual heritage. He paints beautiful, strong, inspiring pictures, gives hope, and encourages dreaming. At the same time, he motivates everyone to try realizing those dreams, and to start building a better tomorrow in a peaceful way. Overall, I personally interpret the lyrics as a positive message pro individualism, independence and creative self-expression. Besides that, uniting three languages in one rap song is a message that speaks for itself.

From what I know, Alex Sandunga’s lyrics substantially go in a similar direction. Anyway, music is one language on its own, and when I heard Alex Sandunga’s verse, I immediately felt it and was blown away by his skills, creativity and positive energy. Collaborating with him is a pure joy and enormously beneficial. I learn so much from him every time, since he always gives very detailed, constructive feedback, and maintains a very close and intense teamwork. His drive and passion set an example. It still amazes me that he was interested in a non-profit cooperation so quickly and devotedly, when we first met on Myspace.

For this reason, I want to take the opportunity, and proudly introduce you all to our good friend and star guest Alex Sandunga. Born in Cuba, he became a hip-hop activist to describe the situation of the Cuban people and to fight against social injustice, racism, police harassment, as well as oppression. He already shared stages with artists like Mos Def, The Roots and Common, toured internationally, and was featured in magazines like Rolling Stone, New York Times, Vibes, and many more. Who could possibly be more qualified for the job of a modern hip-hop Pippi Longstocking?

Another early 2005 production and the first Trans.formation track that made it on the album. It was the time when I finally understood the basic mechanics of hip-hop beats, and was able to build one without having to use any samples.

Nevertheless, Essential I asked me to still include a sample of a reggae song he felt would add nicely to the vibe of the track. Now it serves as a contrasting break with just the right amount of diversion to prevent monotony without disrupting the rhythm. A few years later, Kanye West became well known for such “extravagant” intermezzos, but back then I was often criticized for decadently inserting separate elements, which aren’t repeated throughout the instrumental, and thus make the beat deviate from the standard hip-hop style by sounding too full and complex. As I love to break the norm, generally tend to overdo things, and rarely am satisfied with supplying the bare necessities (culminating in my passion for pathos), I’m deeply grateful and honored to collaborate with a MC, who not only tolerates and easily masters such experiments, but even encourages them! We combine original compositions with samples and strive for those special moments of surprise within the songs. Giving them variety out of the ordinary, while making sure that everything’s held together harmonically by smooth transitions, could maybe even be called our trademark sound.

Of course, “Man of War” only marks the beginning of this metamorphosis. Just like “So Fresh”, it’s relatively straightforward and quickly produced in comparison to our later works. Yet, it’s more than just another oriental-desert themed wannabe club banger, resulting from an overdose of video games and battle rap. Above all, it’s no glorification of any sort of violence or war in the classical national sense. We are strict pacifists! The key to comprehension lies in the multiple dimensions and the subtext of the lyrics, accompanied by musical details. When it comes to our music, there’s always quite a lot lurking beneath the surface. Interestingly, that even happens independently from our original intentions, simply due to the time we take to perfect our material, allowing us to include a wide range of impressions, influences and perspectives in each track. Consider the tracklist position after “Peace & Onelove”, the left/right panning that steps out of the line during the march, the lyrical references to Tupac and J Dilla (RIP), the social criticism and last but not least the reggae allusion. It’s no coincidence. From my point of view, in this context, being a man of war means being battle-tested and standing firm in the personal struggles of life, the hip-hop competition and the social (class) war against the system. Here we’ve come full circle: It’s about revolution!

Racism too is a deadly virus - one that is actually engineered by humans. Don't fall for it. Instead, build your own normal, your true normal, by getting in tune with nature, organizing and freeing yourself from societal norms. 

No, it's surely not a mask that restricts your freedom. It takes more effort and courage than risking the health of others if you want to change something in your life.
