Following a record-breaking warm Arctic winter, Arctic Ocean sea ice looks set to hit a record low maximum level. The ice hit a maximum of 14,478 million km2 on the second day of March. If the ice does not grow any more this year, this will set a new record, beating the previous low maximum set last year.

Nearly half of all natural World Heritage sites, including Australia's Great Barrier Reef, are threatened by harmful industrial activities, according to a new WWF report. 

These sites provide vital services to people and the environment, but are at risk worldwide from activities including oil and gas exploration, mining and illegal logging.
 
The report, produced for WWF by Dalberg Global Development Advisors, shows how natural World Heritage sites contribute to economic and social development through the protection of the environment, but also details global failures to protect these areas of outstanding universal value.

Following the impassioned plea from Sir David Attenborough to protect the Great Barrier Reef, WWF-Australia this week called on the Australian Government to fix a $100 million "black hole" in the budget for critical Reef programs.

In the Great Barrier Reef Water Science Taskforce’s Interim Report the Australian Government’s commitment for pollution programs is set out as $300 million over five years.
 
But the annual budget figures in the report show a $100 million "black hole" in Federal funding with only $198.8 million allocated over the five-year period.

Illegal fishing in Mexico's Gulf of California has led to the near extinction of the vaquita porpoise.

These illegal methods are also a serious issue in Australia, with 'no-net zones' being introduced into Queensland waters to prevent the unnecessary killing of various marine species.

But how effective are these protection measures?
