Recorded by placing four microphones on each wall of a moving elevator, Lift Muzak sonically explores the state of liminality when travelling in a lift. 

The first half of the track accentuates the physical sensation of this means of transportation through industrial sounds that have been manipulated using granular synthesis, building towards a climax that dissipates into a contrasting – and introspective – ambient section.

The idea behind this track is derived from muzak - or 'elevator music', a style of music purposefully constructed to serve as background music, mainly in retail stores, as well as other public institutions.

Both elevators and muzak are unnatural, artificial and a direct result of consumerism, and by titling the track 'Lift Muzak', it forms a paradox between the relaxing lounge/jazz style of muzak and the harsh industrial sounds emitted from a lift, raising the idea that these sounds have more in common than we think...
