A warm welcome to Julien Minarro aka Waxist!

Julien is a Lyon based DJ, producer and co runs the SOL Discos reissue label along side Pascal Rioux (a la @favoriterec) 

I’ve been in touch with Julien for a while now and stoked that he agreed to do a mix for us. His Serendipity show on @lemellotron and Red Stripe Disco mixes have been a big source of inspiration for me over the years!

Waxist has turned out some killer disco edits on labels including Kalakuta Soul, @rainandshinerecords @culturesofsoul & @isleofjurarecords He’s also a dab hand at A&R and been involved in official reissues of some of the rarest disco records out there. His own label SOL Discos has put out 3x 45s and 2x LP comps, so go check those out.

This time Waxist delivers a fab 1 hour mix spanning some his favourite disco & house records!

Pour ce 7ème volet, on est ravis de vous proposer la sélection de Waxist. Artiste lyonnais, faisant partie de la J.A.W Family, c'est un inconditionnel de grooves rares (soul, modern soul, disco, funk,...). Grâce à son label SOL Discos hébergé chez Favorite Recordings, il réalise des compilations remplies de tracks boogie / modern soul autant délicieuses qu'introuvables. Producteur et remixeur, il a aussi une émission de radio sur Le Mellotron... Aujourd'hui, il nous propose un peu plus d'une heure d'un set rempli de ballades soul US downtempo... - Waxist : "This mix was recorded on a saturday evening, in my basement where I currently have my set up & records. It was recorded with two turntables and an E&S DJR400 mixer, records only. 

A few weeks before recording the selection, I caught a few opportunities to put the selected records apart at several occasions, while I wasn't working or when my kids didn't need me.

With the ongoing lockdown, I am going through my record collection again quite a lot, revisiting some albums or 45s I haven't listened to for a while. Basically, I kind of stopped buying records since the beginning of the lockdown as I can't visit record shops, and I didn't want to order on the Internet as the post service seems a bit messy with the virus. Strangely, it's a great opportunity to sit down & focus on what I actually have in my collection and listen to music in a different way, paying more attention to details, cover art, arrangements etc. Not only focusing on getting more "dancefloor oriented" music, as I would usually do in normal times.

For the mix itself, I focused on downtempo soul ballads which I love a lot. It's mostly about 70's US productions. This is typically the kind of music I would play on a sunny sunday morning, taking the time to wake up slowly with a cup of coffee & my kids playing in their pyjamas in the living room. But it could also be on a weekend evening with a glass of good Côtes du Rhône wine..."

"Mr Mendel, for those that dont already know, is a man to keep an eye on. Not that he's new on the scene; Mendel hosts top class nights I Love Vinyl and The Daisy Age in his hometown Amsterdam and he's been digging hard since he made the cross over to more varied sounds from his Hip Hop early days. One need only to listen to any one of the mixes he has up on his soundcloud page to discover the depth of his skills at both digging and spinning. One might argue that Mendel is amongst the next generation of a lineage that runs through Rahaan, Kon & Amir, Rich Medina, Sadar Bahar and even our friend Marcel Vogel. With some edits of his own beginning to surface, it's pretty clear the guy has a little bit of what we love written all over his future.
