The acapella is from a recording session prior to 1982, even though the song remained unreleased until Fleetwood Mac's 2003 "Say You Will," for which Nicks recorded a new vocal. The consensus among fans: 1982>2003. Lindsey Buckingham's over-worked production and terrible arrangement sounded like sabotage those familiar with the scorching versions Nicks turned in years prior.

Ask The Artist: Sorcerer

London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

International Sounds 21 - Dicky Trisco [with Kabinett]

There can't be many acts with as wide an appeal as Sheffield producer and artist Yarni. The late, great Andrew Weatherall was fond of dropping his tunes, Gilles Peterson and Luke Una are fans, and radio types Craig Charles and Huey Morgan are often known to slide one into their 6Music schedules.

He's just announced what he's calling his most ambitious project to date, "Anemoia," an album exploring the Greek concept of nostalgia for a time never known, collaborating with ten musicians and vocalists across ten tracks that weave disco, soul, jazz-funk, hip-hop and trip-hop into a thoroughly modern tapestry. "This isn't about recreating the past, but channeling its spirit into something new," he says.

It's set for an October release on Stanhope Records, with a string of teaser singles to keep an eye out for in the meantime. But us being the impatient types that we are, we persuaded him to take to the decks for a mix session right here, right now...

In The Mix: Yarni

Our August instalment in the First Word mixtape series comes courtesy of broadcaster, journalist and DJ Tina Edwards. A trusted tastemaker and long-standing friend of the label, Tina has been championing soulful sounds from across the globe for over a decade, with selections that span jazz, broken beat, electronic textures and beyond. She’s presented on BBC Radio 3, Worldwide FM and Jazz FM, and is a regular voice curating forward-thinking sounds both on-air and on dancefloors. On the mix, Tina says:

"When I record mixes at home, I like to create in a hill shape; there’s no audience in front of me to respond to so sometimes I set a scene, take the listener on an excursion, and drop them off back where we started. 

This isn’t a flashy mix but a response to First Word’s invitation to dig out music from the soul; I’ve curated music that makes me wanna move my hips, makes my soul vibrate. I’ve ended with one of my favourite tracks from the First Record catalogue, too. Hope you find something in here that you enjoy.

Our man Tiago was in town recently for some gigs and was nice enough to come out to Kane studios to record a podcast, hang, and have some liquid refreshments. Hailing from Lisbon where he is a weekly resident at Club Lux, Tiago has a laid back intensity that is reflected in the expansive and inquisitive nature of his sets. Raised on good music in his home, turned on to drumming by his older brother, he came to Dj'ing via live music. Next up in the Mr Bongo Record Club mix series we invited Norwich-based DJ collective and party purveyors Soul Stew to give us a taste of what they're all about. Firmly rooted in the city's scene for over 9 years, they've been throwing some of the finest parties Norwich has to offer. Alongside championing local talent they’ve also hosted a real range of some of the top international selectors from far and wide, including Sassy J, Volcov, Mark Grusane, Sadar Bahar, Floating Points, Ash Lauryn and Ge-ology to name only a handful.&nbsp;

As a DJ duo Bill and Jack are a real joy to see behind the decks. Effortless blends of unforgiving, unquantized disco, boogie, house, techno and beyond. Their style, skill and passion led to them being signed to Sounds Familiar earlier this year and has seen them play at Fabric, KOKO, Pickle Factory, We Out Here, Lost Village, Field Maneuvers and many more great dancefloors.
