We’re kicking off SPCEDUST Selections 2025 with Mix #33 from Ireland’s very own Ricky Chong, a selector who’s as sharp as his records are deep. Hailing from Sligo, a town that’s as rich in culture as it is ruggedly beautiful. Ricky grew up knee deep in his pop's funk, jazz, and soul crates. That early influence lit a spark that turned into a vinyl obsession, shaping his sound into something truly special.

Ricky’s not here to tick genre boxes, only the ride baby!. Whether it’s rare disco burners, African boogie treasures, or the pulse of 90s house, his sets are all about blending the unexpected with the familiar, creating a connection that keeps the dance-floor moving & grooving.

After cutting his teeth with Sligo’s Faint crew, Ricky’s quickly become a name to watch. His encyclopedic knowledge of 20th-century music, combined with his fearless approach to mixing, has earned him gigs alongside the likes of Jeremy Underground. Next up, you’ll find him in Dublin on Feb 1st at the Disco All Dayer, sharing the stage with heavyweights like Joe Claussell and the Idjut Boys. Oh, and don’t sleep on his monthly residency at The Big Romance—a spot where Ricky’s vibe really comes to life.

Ricky’s SPCEDUST mix is nothing short of awesome. At 2 hours and a bit, it’s a bold, dynamic trip through his record bag, a masterclass in flow and selection. London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

We can’t deny it anymore, friends… The summer season entered its final stage and that is a time that tends to always make me a bit melancholic. Luckily I’m not the only one who feels that way and for those of you who need some musical comfort, I got just the right Messy Mix for you, delivered by a true hero of mine - Mr. @joemorris from Leeds.

Joe has been an essential figure in the contemporary Balearic house and electronica scene, running the great label Shades Of Sound Records with plenty of sweet releases in that field, including his own ones. He released a new album called “Some Kind of Paradise” this summer which I enjoyed during the warmer days of the season. It’s a wonderful selection of 90s trip hop, downtempo, and modern Balearic electronica and I love it. Same goes for his monthly radio show on “Loose FM”... needless to say - I’m a huge fan and I kindly recommend you to check out his Soundcloud as soon as possible.

So, obviously I’m very thrilled to have Joe on board for this laidback new Messy Mix which goes by the title “Last Rays Of Summer.” According to him this set is a “collection of moods and sound palettes to compliment the last rays of summer as they melt into the first shafts of autumnal light.” And yeah, it definitely transports that atmosphere in a very warm and wonderful way. It makes that whole transitional process a lot easier and I hope you’ll enjoy this soothing selection of music as much as I do.

Messy Mix 28 | Last Rays Of Summer (by Joe Morris)

Ahead of Saturday’s Dane’s Dance Emporium x Voyage Funktastique session this Saturday at Performance Works, we asked Walla P to contribute a mix to our Pacific Spirit series. 

As predicted, he did not disappoint! In our opinion (and many others) Walla P is one of the purest and most talented DJs in the funk, disco, and boogie sphere, and we can’t wait to see him do his thing here in Vancouver for the first time.

Here are a few words about his mix from the man himself…

“For this guest mix, I got inspired by listening to some of the previous mixes, lots of atmospheric/ambient grooves from records that came out over the last decade or so. Lots of stuff you don’t get to usually play, but I like to think that this could be the soundtrack for my flight to Vancouver.”
