Let'z roll back 2 tha year I graduated High School, 1983'. What was being played where I lived in South Lorain (Cleveland) Ohio & what was being played in Chicago Radio was totally different. And Cleveland was only a few hours away from Chicago & not 2 mention Detroit & NYC. Yet in Cleveland played a lot of Funk & NY Electro compared 2 what Chicago was playing, mainly Italian imports & HiNrg Disco & home made beat trax from early drum machines. Times have surely changed... But let'z get back 2 the matter at hand. We got this dope tape from Kenny "Jammin" Jason who was my favorite DJ out of Chicago, that being Farley "JackMaster" Funk'z, & Kenny was his mentor. That sayz a lot 4 me. From the heavy synth Gospel Boogie of Sharnell Morton's "You Are My Shining Star" to the magnificent Network & Co private Disco "Spirit Of The Boogie", most of these songs are highly challenging to find on their original format, not to mention at a decent price. Direct Connect Shun "He's No Good" records have been destroyed in a flood, and the few copies which have sold on the Internet reach the 3 figures price tags for example. Also, the album is proud to introduce to a wider audience some lesser-known but exceptional recordings such as Janice "Nikki" Harrison's "Magic Of Love" which is taken from a Broadway musical produced & composed by Ted Wortham - who also composed for Philadelphia International Recordings artists such as Teddy Pendergrass, Anthony White or Jean Carn.

Message In Our Music Volume 2 has been fully remastered, and features interview-based liner notes, along with never seen before pictures of the artists selected.

In Loving Memory of Philip Grahame Asher [1966 - 2021]

On Friday 22nd January 2021 our lovely friend Phil Asher suddenly passed away leaving his family, friends and the global dance music community mourning the loss of one of life’s unsung heroes and real good guys.

Without Phil Asher or PHLASH there would be no Reel People. Like so many artists and acts that came from London’s soulful dance scene in the early 2000s he was the LINK that made it all happen. He introduced all 3 of us and like all others we followed him in awe of his passion for music and love for his community and life.

Phil was an MPC beating, dancefloor destroying, hands in the air making, cup of tea and yum yum eating man like no other. Words can’t begin to describe just how infectious his laugh was and how warm his hugs were.

We are so grateful that Brian, Sheldon and all the guys at Traxsource have helped us to put this tribute page to Phil live on the site. Thanks also to all the friends of Phlash who have supported with charts and to Spinna for such a wonderful dj mix. For those who don’t know about Phil’s musical legacy, please take time to delve into this page and discover incredible joints and jams. For those who do know about Phil, we hope you find some hidden gems from this restless soul.

Phil was incredibly proud of his amazing son Marvin who has followed in his dad’s footsteps into music production under the aliases NGC and the Xutians. With this in mind his close friends have set up The Marvin Jupiter Asher fund to help Marvin continue his dream and continue the Asher legacy.
