This week's Junto was to make music on battery powerd devices away from the studio. 

I took my D-05, a battery powered Roland midi keyboard, a DL-8 delay, and two PCM recorders outside - one recorder sending audio of the garden into the back of the D-05, and then that goes via the DL8 into the second recorder that records all the sounds. I ad lib over the garden and neighbourhood sounds. Simple, and fun!

It Started Alright (disquiet0340)
The play on words for this weeks Junto set the mood for some goofy fun. I had been playing with a few cut up samples of a well known Bonzo beat, and noticed a similar swing to a couple of iconic sixties hits (I'm sure you'll know them). This was originally intended for Junto 0035, but didn't come together in time. Actually, this entire song is comprised of unused orphans and forgotten parts and made on an iPad with bits from iElectribe, iMaschine, GarageBand and Audioshare. Quite possibly my strangest piece to date, a hodgepodge of sampling, mixing and beat making that can't be taken too seriously but was fun to make. This was mixed in Cubasis with some tape delay, verb and stereo manipulation for the dizzying effect. Think of it as one of those times where you overstayed your common sense while carousing about. Not an entirely good time, but not a bad one either. Things just got weird...and you were there ;-)

The Assignment: Record a piece of music entirely on the go.

Created on my back steps with an iPad a delay pedal (runs on 12v) and my laptop.

I recorded a simple diatonic tune using Garageband on my iPad then imported it into Samplr. Did a short improvisation using the Looper mode with some delay and manipulation of the filter. I also captured a bit of the sound and looped it throughout much of the track. I recorded several takes on my laptop then combined two of them. Added a fade out at the end.

Mr. Pharis was a local, 19th century figure who died under mysterious circumstances.

Created this entirely on myandroid cell phone. I used Grainstorm to create the noise track. Then i imported the noise into G-stomper where i created a simple beat at 38 bpm and used some of my existing samples.

The Assignment: Record a piece of music entirely on the go.

Step 1: This week’s project is battery-operated. Or solar. Just not sitting at home plugged into a wall. The goal is to record a piece of music on an entirely portable setup. It could just be you, a ukulele, and your phone. It could be far more involved. (Thanks to Jason Richardson for inspiring this project.)

Step 2: Put together a portable kit and plan your recording scenario. (Bonus points if you record in-motion, like in the back seat of a car or on a bus.)

Step 3: Record a piece of music based on the planning in Step 2. Assume in advance some adjustments to your plan will be necessary after reality sets in.

Six More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0340” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your track.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0340” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your track. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your track.

Escape - Pod007 (disquiet0340)

Okay, here it is: disquiet0340 "porta party".

Equipment: A simple, battery-driven Theremin (pitch controllable only) connected to the great cheap nasty Korg Monotron Delay (a combination which works out fine recorded via line); recorded via air with a Zoom H1n (new). 

Recording was done on the old southern graveyard of Munich ('Alter Südfriedhof') while walking backwards (bonus points!), my beloved woman recording while following me. Tourist and natives seemed disturbed and may have considered us as some kind of ghost busters hunting electronic voice phenomenons.  You can hear airplanes, church bells and our steps in the gravel, and, of course, the Theremin resonating in the Monotron Delay.

Because of the movement it was nearly impossible for me to calibrate the zero point of the theremin. Please consider the tonal structure simply as just too complicated for the ears of non-transdimensional beings like humans … ;-)

We did many recordings, most of them unusable because of wind noise or other extraneous noises. Because of these problems I repeated the only (in my ears) usable part for five times to have some kind of repetitive musical structure.

So this is not 100% authentic, as there is a filter on very low noises and the duration is a fake, its 5x of the same 30 seconds. Maybe I manage to record another, better version …

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
