The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Solid Steel - the world’s longest running mix series - returns with a special two-hour mix from Ben UFO.

Speaking to us about the mix, Ben said: “This is the set I played at last year's Meakusma Festival. It's been one of my favourite events for the past three years running, and I've programmed a stage at the last two editions. Last summer I was joined by Kara-Lis Coverdale, Jay Glass Dubs and the Timedance crew - Batu, Ploy and Bruce. It's one of the only events I can think of where dance music co-exists with a broad range of experimental music in a way that feels natural, unpretentious and unforced. I love it there, and hopefully that comes across in this recording."

Created in 1988 by Coldcut, and broadcasting on the then pirate radio station Kiss FM, Solid Steel has been releasing mixes for the past 30 years, bringing the weekly shows to an end in December 2018 with a final guest mix from Juan Atkins (the first guest to appear on the show in 1988). Returning for 2019 in a new, more focussed monthly format, continuing Solid Steel’s long history of supporting the best of both established and emerging artists. In his Bleep mix, LA beat scene savant The Gaslamp Killer builds outwards from a megamix of tracks that feature on his Heart Math LP. Eight pieces of that album’s psychedelic, brooding leftfield hip-hop style are blended together at the centre of this mix, with The Gaslamp Killer’s production aided by features from the likes of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and The Heliocentrics. In the sections either side of the Heart Math suite the listener is treated to a feast of far-out sonics, from astral found-sound experiments and soulful grooves to trippy prog-hop and fast, tweaking beat tracks. Natureboy Flako, Computer Jay and Mr. Oizo are just three artists who The Gaslamp Killer includes here, and things close out with another Heart Math number - in this instance the title-track. The overall effect is an hour of mind-expanding music which sounds as much like an intergalactic radio broadcast as it does a DJ mix

We had toured versions of the set on and off for nearly two years, and by this point we were pretty much at our peak.
