Solid Steel (16th May)This week the show has a distinct 80's feel about it starting with a mix from Cut Chemist featuring remixes and songs from 'Funk Off', a compilation of music by 1980's French post punk, industrial, minimal collective Vox Populi! and Pacific 231. Cut Chemist discovered their material in 2004 while on tour/record digging in Milan where he picked up a compilation featuring their track “Megamix”. Originally released in the 80s, the track was not rooted in disco, hip hop & DJ history but rather post punk and industrial influences. Music Concrete is what the collective would have perhaps described their approach at the time. “Wild Style on dust” was how Cut’s collaborator Tom Fitzgerald described it on hearing it 20 years later. Finding this record ultimately led to Cut Chemist tracking down the group, bonding over shared aesthetics and getting their blessing for this collection, which includes unreleased tracks, photographs and little-seen flyers and art from the group. The vinyl and CD are released in the UK on 9th June through A Stable Sound.
 
DK picks up the reigns in a similar vein, but starting with Illum Sphere's industrial edged Spectre Vex and then it's strictly 80's, including music from the UK that directly influenced Vox Populi, with tracks from Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire and A Certain Ratio. Music from New York also features with Liquid Liquid and Death Comet Crew featuring Rammellzee and Italy's version of Delia Derbyshire, synth wizard Doris Norton, plus the Francois Kevorkian produced collaboration between Jah Wobble and Holger Czukay.

In Hour 2 we're joined by BreakBeat Lou, a true legendary figure in hip hop culture. Alongside Lenny Roberts, he co created the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series that provided samples for most of the top Hip Hop producers from DJ Premier, Large Professor, The Bomb Squad, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre and Marley Marl, to J Dilla, Salaam Remi and Just Blaze. They began compiling albums of classic breaks that had been played by Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa, but they soon became sample sources for the next generation of producers, often using edits of the tracks done by Lou. The classic Amen break used in Jungle is just one example that appeared early on in this series. We don't have a track list for his mix, but you'll recognise some of them from the UBB series plus plenty more obscure gems from his collection and you can catch him spinning alongside Peanut Butter Wolf on their European tour this week.

In 2009, I consulted for, and appeared in, Activision's DJ Hero video game.   As part of my involvement, I performed at quite a few industry events and eventually did a couple of club dates.  Some of these sets were more rehearsed than others, and the quality varied.  This one, recorded live on Halloween night at a KCRW benefit, was far and away my favorite of the bunch...both in terms of technical display and song selection.  I'll post some of the other recorded sets later, there's some nice moments along the way.- DJ Shadow
