Incoming on Kickback & Bunjy's decorated X-AMNT label is an unexpected team-up with local collective Phat, who invite three of their artists to showcase their production prowess over the course of the six-track EP One Phat Trip Hazard.

First up are a pair of drum and bass offerings from skilled newcomer KRYD, a DJ/producer from rural England whose gritty, atmospheric rollers have marked him out as one to watch for 2021. "Gyaldem" opens with a reverberating vocal sample steeped in Jamaican patois before a thunderous bassline rips through the mix, accompanied by vicious scratches of feedback and tightly programmed percussive clicks. "Out of Line", meanwhile, is comparatively minimal, its cinematic spoken-word hook and throbbing synths soon giving way to pared-back, syncopated drops punctuated by fluttering, jungle-esque subs and rotary hisses.

Next on show is Belgium-born, Guildford-based talent smuj, who serves up two contrasting cuts spotlighting her versatility across the D&B spectrum as both a singer and a producer. "Slip" commences with gleaming melodies, slipping into smooth, sprawling climaxes built upon her own tender vocals and an amalgamation of oscillating sub-bass, snatches of delayed synths and rattling drums. "Uckingwhat", on the other hand, is a dark and jagged instrumental invention, chiefly drawing on jump-up influences. Jittering staccato chimes collide with choppy percussion and knotted basslines, resulting in one of her heaviest creations yet.

The third and final rising star on show is multi-genre innovator Jacob "Sniffa" Peters, who first introduces himself with the lewd and sonically intriguing "Rule34". An untamed 4x4 cut oriented around X-rated moans and throaty basslines, it's quite literally the label's dirtiest offering to date: proceed with caution! Finally, "The Giant Killer Shrew" sees him return to D&B in a big way. Opening with pummelling bass and sci-fi FX, the track careens into bulldozing drops built upon snarling reeses and brutal drum work, closing proceedings on a high.

The One Phat Trip Hazard EP lands 23 April via Juno Download and Spotify, arriving elsewhere on 30 April.

Hot on the heels of last month’s drop “Cold Lock” from label owners Bunjy and Kickback, Bristol’s X-AMNT Music returns this August with a new single from a fresh face: enter 36-year-old producer Kravitz and his stellar debut signing “Flux”.

Hailing from the picturesque Somerset city of Bath, the seasoned selecta has earned his stripes as a drum and bass DJ since his teenage years, but only recently forayed into production. After first getting acquainted with the basics back in 2019, he’s taken the pandemic-induced lockdowns thereafter in his stride, drawing upon the sage advice of gifted contemporaries to level up his technical abilities.

His debut EP, Painkiller, landed in February to rave reviews, earning endorsements from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s René LaVice, KISS FM’s Mollie Collins and influential publication Data Transmission.

“Flux”, then, builds upon the momentum of its predecessor, greeting listeners with spine-chilling reverberating plucks and sputtering low-end fuzz before launching into juddering crescendos underscored by rattling percussion and sprinklings of soulful adlibs. It’s a powerful statement from the budding beatmaker which will no doubt leave him firmly on the radar of tastemakers in the coming months…

“Flux” hits Juno Download and Spotify on 6 August and will be available from a full range of retailers and streaming services the following Friday, 13 August 2021.

Maintaining an unquestionably high-octane output on their emergent label, X-AMNT, since its formation last year, co-founders and frequent collaborators Bunjy and Kickback return this July with another team-up: the boisterous new drum and bass single “Cold Lock”.

Kicking off with an inviting polyphony of effervescent synths and glittering arpeggios, “Cold Lock” soon builds to heady climaxes, with buoyant basslines, fluttering reeses and slick clicks coming together to result in a slice of D&B serenity.

“Cold Lock” serves as the fourth collaboration from the Bristolian tag-team to hit streaming services. Between their first outing and label debut “Boundaries” (feat. Kayla), their jungle twist on Laid Blak’s reggae sizzler “Mic Man”, and their high-profile take on Alonestar and Ed Sheeran’s “Raise ‘Em Up”, the pair took the scene by storm in 2020, with the three releases collectively accruing over a million streams. 

The new single comes as a natural extension of the duo’s thriving musical alliance, spotlighting yet another string to their bow as they opt for a markedly lighter sound on this release.

X-AMNT presents Stoners Delight, the latest EP from Conflate. Whether it's running coaches to events, DJing at Bedlam and Infidelity in the 2000s or producing music, a love of drum & bass has been a constant for the producer. Stoners Delight is the follow up to 2020s Magnified and shows a producer who understands how to get dancefloors moving. 

‘Concrete Peelings’ opens Stoners Delight. Vibrant and colourful synths pop from the speakers, offset by crunchy bass notes. When the drop hits, the bass lines are thick like lava, and the percussion buries itself into the brain’s deepest crevices. ‘Concrete Peelings’ is a ravers delight.

Driving sub-bass, piano riffs and yearning vocal samples open 'The World Is Over'. Conflate expands his initial ideas, and the track unfurls into a stirring piece of drum & bass.

‘Chuggy Wuggy’ has one thing on its mind: sound system decimation. Tension is built in the introduction with metallic stabs and rib-shattering percussion. When the drop arrives, distorted riffs hit the speakers with aplomb. ‘Chuggy Wuggy’ will surely resonate with dance floors up and down the country. 

‘Common Sense’ closes Stoners Delight with a bang. Snarling drum programming makes up the track's base, while high-octane synth lasers ring out alongside them. Elsewhere, distorted bass and sci-fi-like samples run through the pulse of 'Common Sense'. The result? A hair-raising banger designed to make the body move.

'Burgeoning producer FRYDAY returns to X-AMNT with Mercy Is For The Weak. After learning to DJ so he could perform on stage in memory of a close friend, FRYDAY began to produce music back in 2020. His track 'Nitty Gritty' made it on to "X-AMNT Of Bass Vol 1", and a release on label Ruffneck Ting would soon follow. On Mercy Is For The Weak, FRYDAY delivers a masterclass in bass manipulation, crafting four low-end centric tracks sure to go off in the clubs. 

Title track ‘Mercy Is For The Weak’ opens the EP. Stony pads and cybernetic samples contribute to a minacious intro. Then, we’re into the drop. Here, a muscular bass pattern serves as the tune’s main feature, stomping all over a set of rapid-fire drums. Next up is ‘Cardiac’. Like a free-form artist, FRYDAY dabs splodges of bass onto his canvas. His canvas is, of course, a driving set of kicks and claps. Each dab of low-end pressure activates the brain’s various dopamine receptors, endless jubilation from start to finish. 

‘Chop’ buries itself deep inside the speaker cone. Laser-like bass motifs make up the track’s lead element while burrowing percussion noodles away underneath. 

‘Original’ closes out the record. A dual-bass pattern plays out over the percussion in the track’s verse. Snappy for a couple of seconds, it later morphs into a pulverising low-end blast. There's a brief breakdown to catch the breath; then we're back into low-end madness for the closing moments of the EP’s final track'.

Esteemed drum & bass imprint X-AMNT return with Lo-Key EP, the latest release from producer Kravitz. Hailing from Bath, England, Kravitz marks his return to the label with the record, having released 'Flux' at the back end of 2021. 

Thanks to his years spent behind the decks as a DJ, Kravitz knows what makes dancefloors tick, and on the Low-Key EP, he's transferred that knowledge into his productions. Face-melting bass lines and acute percussion make this EP one to remember. 

Title track 'Low-Key' opens the record. Here, driving percussion sets a steady groove while waves of distorted bass crash around them. It's all tied together with a vocal: "stay low key, let them assume". It's a fitting mantra for the tune's concentrated dose of energy. 

'You've Got It' kicks off with heavy kick patterns and synth lines that shine like bright lights. Later, an amorphous low-end riff joins the mix. Intercut with pummelling breaks and samples; it's screwface business, indeed. 

The EP's penultimate track, 'What The F**k', is a blend of quickfire drums and gritty bass lines. The latter element, distorted and fuzzy, bend over the rhythmic framework, sure to cause dancefloor chaos from beginning to end. 

'Africa' closes the release. A colossal track, the bass lines sprawl over nimble percussion work, and brief melodic samples garnish the heavyweight sonic framework. 

Lo-Key EP will arrive on Juno Download & Spotify on 31st May, landing on all digital platforms a week later on 7th June.

'Old Stories' closes the EP. Subcriminal lays down a driving rhythm section that propels the tune forward, but the real stand-out is the stirring melody line. Deep and exploratory, it conjures up that end-of-night feeling, where the night bleeds into the morning, and all that's left is good friends and better memories.

The independent Bristol-based music label was founded by Bunjy and Kickback, after two like-minded artists united to form an exciting new Jungle/DnB record brand.

Kickback is a long-standing DJ and producer with a wealth of musical talent under his belt. Having an impressive discography and support network, the Bristol born artist translates his undeniable passion for Jungle & Drum and Bass into each set and piece of work he puts out.

Both titans of the local music scene in their own right, long-standing Bristol DJs Bunjy and Kickback make for a heavyweight production duo. While most renowned for co-founding acclaimed reggae band Laid Blak – who have extensively toured the world and have even been covered by Ed Sheeran – Bunjy is also equally adept in producing jungle. Kickback, meanwhile, has played at Glastonbury and Westfest, and recently debuted on AFT Records with the sinewy, Keeno-approved “We Roll”. The first offering from the pair’s new label, X-AMNT, comes courtesy of its two founders. “Boundaries” features soothing vocals from Kayla and is accompanied by two radical reinterpretations of the track.

A breezy summer roller laced with an underlying bite, “Boundaries” opens with soulful, pop-tinged lyrics and vibrant flourishes of acoustic guitar before erupting into coarse, bass-heavy drops, punctuated by bouncy 808s and skittering hi-hats. Drastically transforming the song into an altogether softer number on its first remix, Bunjy pares back the arrangement, dropping out the brutal basslines in favour of a lighter, more commercial approach centred on the song’s exquisite topline. On the remix’s final verse, in steps special guest Chavez of Bristol collective Free Culture, who provides a slick, sweet-talking sixteen bars directly addressing his other half.

Closing proceedings is a remix by Chris Gould, a fellow West Country production whizz and a long-time affiliate of Bunjy’s, having served as one of his colleagues in the ‘90s house outfit Bristol Exposure. Gould flips the track into a tropical, R&B-leaning pop piece, retaining Chavez’s rap verse and decorating it with delicate, reverberating plucks to make for yet another unique spin on the song.

With an initial offering as versatile as this, it’s clear that the newly minted X-AMNT has a long future ahead, with plenty of surprises around the corner. Get to know.

Just one month on from the launch of their brand-new label, X-AMNT, Bristol bass music lynchpins Bunjy and Kickback are back with its second release: a three-track remix EP from the world-renowned West Country ‘street soul’ outfit Laid Blak. “Mic Man” (featuring Tita Lau), first released via Sugar Shack Records in 2018 as part of the group’s stellar sophomore album About Time, has proven itself to be a firm fan favourite, so the X-AMNT head honchos themselves have given the track a vibrant jungle makeover, also calling upon fellow Bristolian drum and bass stalwart Subcriminal to provide a darker spin on the track.

As a founding member of Laid Blak and a co-producer of the original song, Bunjy is uniquely qualified to take on the reggae-tinged anthem. Teaming up with fellow label boss Kickback, the pair retain the track’s iconic ska strokes and dubwise rhythms, pushing up the tempo and adding resonant basslines and shuffling breaks to stay as true to the original mix as possible while providing subtle twists which will appeal to junglists and reggae fans alike. Two versions of the track are available on the release, with both an extended remix and a shorter radio edit on offer.  

Meanwhile, Subcriminal – whose rich back catalogue includes releases on Liondub, Serial Killaz and Audio Addict – provides a decidedly different slant on the track. The song’s distinctive vocal contributions from frontman Joe Peng and special guest Tita Lau are placed atop rolling subs, with the song working up to forward-thinking crescendos garnished by jump up-inspired formant synths, reverb-drenched stabs and dub sirens to make for a remix in equal parts new-school and nostalgic. It’s a promising indication of what’s to come from X-AMNT, showing that while the label’s first two releases may be centred around their close affiliates, they’ve got their ears firmly to the ground.

Kicking off 2021 with a brand-new signing, Bunjy and Kickback's fledgling drum and bass label X-AMNT returns with the Dragon EP, a hefty four-tracker from emergent local talent Subcriminal.

Having made strides with recent releases on labels like Serial Killaz, Liondub and Deep In The Jungle, garnering support in droves from heavyweights of the scene including Noisia, Dillinja and Kenny Ken, the Bristolian producer is fast on the rise. The new project marks his return to X-AMNT following a colossal remix of Laid Blak's "Mic Man", which landed back in November.

Serving as a bite-sized concept album of sorts, the Dragon EP utilises ethereal vocal samples and sci-fi song titles to transport listeners into a mythical universe. First up, introduced with ebbing synths, "Dragon Egg" builds up to sparse, minimal drops, with brassy, winding leads ducking in and out of the mix in a dizzying game of call-and-response. "Flying Dragon", meanwhile, makes use of twinkling melodies, pitched-up vocal cuts and resonant subs to result in a breezy, feel-good roller.

Commencing with epic, drawn-out chords and atmospheric, delay-soaked outbursts, "Incubator" follows in the same vein as its predecessors, striking an expert balance between effervescent melodies and hard-hitting drops. Gravelly, reverberating synths dart around at a breakneck pace, underscored by pummelling kicks and slick, percussive clicks. Seeing out the EP is "Movie", an immersive slice of liquid bliss which pairs serene strings with meandering sub-bass, making for heartwarming results.

The Dragon EP lands 19 February exclusively via Spotify and Juno Download, hitting other retailers and streaming services a week later on 26 February.
