After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. Elemental Vol. 8 continues the journey begun in Vol. 1, returning to the meeting point of nature and circuitry where country becomes techno and techno becomes country. The project carries forward the Elemental idea — that music, like weather or landscape, isn’t a metaphor but a living force that moves through us.

The sound remains tactile and porous: guitars still breathe, synths still shimmer, but the pulse runs deeper now, steadier, like groundwater finding its course beneath open fields. The arrangements move between organic drift and machine precision — footstep and kick drum, heartbeat and bassline — tracing a quiet dialogue between wilderness and pattern. Kiasmos mark their return in 2017 with a new 12” EP titled Blurred — available worldwide on October 6th via Erased Tapes.

Since their 2015 Swept EP, the duo have been performing shows extensively across the world. After writing and recording together in their native Iceland this year, the pair will be bringing a glimpse of light to a particularly gloomy time of year as their light sounds are brighter than ever.

A very new aspect in Christian’s work on this album is the use of vocals. While he used vocal samples for the first time in his collaboration with Ki-colleague and friend Steffen Kirchhoff on their Split EP for Ki Records, more complex vocal structures find their way into his music on „A Forest“. In the track „Eleven“ Christian works with Mohna, singer of Hamburg based band Me Succeeds, and uses her fragile voice throughout a whole track.

Earlier in 2018, Tokyo's Yunosuke Senoo aka Lycoriscoris released his genre-defying album ‘Flight’ via Anjunadeep. Ambient, emotive, and cinematic, ‘Flight’ is a bold showcase of skilled production and songwriting. 'Flight (Remixed)’ sees reinterpretations from German artists Grandbrothers and Ryan Davis.

Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel of Grandbrothers have won plaudits from the likes of Dixon and Gilles Peterson, and drawn comparison to Steve Reich. They create all of their sounds with a grand piano, everything from melody to percussion. On this, their first ever remix, Erol and Lukas re-imagine the soulful progression of ‘Blue’, accentuating the ruminative piano score of the original.

Ryan Davis’ interpretation of Lycoriscoris’ Stella begins unassumingly soothing and reflective, only to give way to dissonant strings and a dark vibrating low-end that evoke the cinematic production of Hopkins and Moderat.

Originally the song was an improvised, acoustic piano piece I used to play at the live shows. It was born out of a happy accident while we were soundchecking for a concert and Mohna was improvising vocals to the piano. After we had played it a few times live I decided to record it. The song has changed completely from its initial acoustic version.
