Xarmolypi, the stage name of indie electronic artist Cole Bateman, is a stylization of the Greek word “charmolypi”, meaning "joy-making sorrow". Drawing on various genres including electronica, trip hop, avant-pop, and psychedelia, Xarmolypi expresses this sentiment by exploring a wide variety of textures and moods within and across his music. Liquid Mirrors EP, released in April 2020, leaned heavily on hip hop and dream pop influences. After releasing a number of SoundCloud singles, Xarmolypi released his debut LP PAREALUSTRA in August 2020. The album showcased a significant sonic departure from the atmosphere of Liquid Mirrors, putting a stronger emphasis on focused, polished riffs while maintaining the same irreverent genre-blending from before. Xarmolypi released Silver Trees in March 2021, his first track to feature vocals.
