"Five years after the first volume, ARENA01, Agva Records is back with ARENA02, a mega-pack of almost forty tracks focusing on the experimental and hybrid club scene of Latin America.

Released in 2016, the first chapter laid the foundations of the label and unveiled a solid tracklisting composed of close and local members of the collective (Defensa, EL PLVYBXY, CHLO…) and international producers (King Doudou, Bigote).

For this second edition, the label did not go easy and gathered a real festival line-up. ARENA02 features projects from all over the continent and beyond, from emerging artists to real headliners: Dengue Dengue Dengue, Lao (NAAFI, Mexico), Bungalovv (TRRUENO, Argentina), Endgame (Precious Metal, UK), Catnapp, Doxxed, Pobvio, or even the Mexican producer who signed the revival of pre-Hispanic tribal, Ozomatecuhtli. 02 OCCASIONS OF FEAR

Bitter Babe's curation for Rhythmic Culture sets a variety of South American artists in the limelight. For her second instalment, she picked the Toronto-based DJ, producer and curator Ana Luisa from Caracas, Venezuela for our podcast series. Her selection and productions are eclectic, not bound by genre, and mostly influenced by Latin American rhythms and experimental club sounds. Her music has been released on Caballito Netlabel, NAAFI, Jupiter4 and Deprerreo. She is the co-founder of Toronto-based club night Veneno and a resident on ISO Radio where she hosts Dimensión Ideal: a monthly show highlighting peripheral and experimental Latin American electronic music.

Bitter Babe: "Ana Luisa is part of the Latin American diaspora, from Venezuela based in Canada. In my opinion one of the most exciting DJs to hear for Latin club music, and now making her own productions. Slowly but steady positioning as one of the upcoming artist to watch closely."

Las culturas prehispánicas interpretaban un eclipse solar como una tragedia para la vida en la tierra, pues creían que el sol era devorado por las xulab, unas hormigas míticas, devoraban al Sol y a la Luna cuando tenía lugar un eclipse fue cambiando por la idea de que, en realidad, era un ser maligno, tal vez el mismísimo diablo o kakaz-baal (diablo en maya), el que intentaba engullir a estos cuerpos celestes.

La cosmovisión maya de los eclipses solares convirtió estos acontecimientos celestes, que los astrónomos mayas aprendieron a predecir, en algo terrorífico. Documentados en varios códices, en especial en el de Dresde, los eclipses solares eran interpretados por este pueblo como el momento en que un ser maléfico devoraba al Sol, el astro dador de vida.

Durante mucho tiempo, en la península del Yucatán existieron todo tipo de creencias místicas relacionadas con los eclipses, como la que afirma que existe una correlación entre los eclipses y las malformaciones fetales. Y es que aunque en la actualidad sabemos que los eclipses son fenómenos completamente naturales, totalmente previsibles y que, evidentemente, no anuncian ninguna desgracia, muchas de estas ancestrales creencias aún perduran en muchos lugares.

As we enter into the 2018th Sequence of the modern earth time, so too does the Nostro Hood System advance forward, the system itself generating a gravitational pull marginally similar to that of the solar system nestled against it. Within the vast confines of the Nostro Hood, a vessel floats proudly – a beacon for the myriad of living spheres that surround it from every angle. The Waystation; a point of congregation for unimaginable beings who seek refuge, resources or even knowledge regarding the various species that occupy nearby worlds. 

At this time, at the beginning of a new year, the vessel lends its halls to the beings of the Nostro Hood. A celebration to the glowing star that lights the terrain for so many beings as it ages yet another lifetime. Providing the aural selections for this momentous occasion are ten artists, each hailing from their own homeworld, each offering a piece of auditory culture to represent the people of their planet. This multicultural experience truly defines the nature of the Nostro Hood – a celebration of difference both sonically and culturally.

27 Year old Menzi Shabane from the Umlazi township of Durban South Africa was one of the early pioneers of the cities now world famous Gqom scene, having rose to prominence as one half of the Infamous Boiz. In the last few years Menzi has produced for many of South Africa's biggest acts like Babes Wodumo, Moonchild Sanelly, Mahotella Queens, Zolani Mahola and Zakes Bantwini. For the last few years has also been organizing Durban's largest annual Goqm Bloq Party called Festive Road Block Umlazi.

Impazamo presents his debut release. A six track ep that explores his signature dark left field gqom productions that have been rocking Durban nightclubs over the past few years. Over the years he has crafted a unique sound exploring Gqoms textures within different arrangements from the genres usual track structure. The ep also includes a collaboration with Uganda MC Ecko Bazz with the track GQOM Tera.


All tracks recorded between 2019 - 2020 in Umlazi Durban and Boutiq Studios Kampala, Uganda.
