For cellist Dave Eggar, the parallels between Mozart and yoga reside in the (sense of) flow and grace we feel in our bodies. “There is a lot of depth to Mozart’s pieces,” he says. “Where Mozart intersects with yoga is in the depth of these pieces corresponding to the depths of your body on an energetic level.” Just as a master musician creates an effortless journey between the phrases of each piece of music, so the yogi is able to accentuate each posture with a natural poise. This idea was the foundation of his new album, The Yoga Sessions:Dave Eggar Quartet: Mozart (Yoga Organix/White Swan). 

The idea of devoting Mozart to a yoga class happened nearly instantaneously between Eggar and producer David Schommer, founder of Yoga Organix and The Yoga Sessions series. “David told me about his yoga series,” Eggar remarks, “and I had been thinking about how to create music suited for the yoga experience. I go to class a lot, and I hear world music, trance, and singer/songwriter material. I thought it would be an interesting concept to record classical music intentioned to function in a Yoga class.” 

Music has been in Eggar’s life since youth. A natural born prodigy, at age three he learned cello and piano, performing on Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera by age seven. His training includes time at Julliard and Harvard University, but his passion lies in the healing modalities that music creates and in the exploration of musical diversity. That diversity can be understood through his work: As an Artist, he has recorded the celebrated New Age albums, Serenity, Angelic Embrace, Left of Blue), and most recently his newest, Kingston Morning, which featured contributions by reggae legends Luciano and Sly and Robbie. Eggar's diversity extends through his studio work, recording with the likes of COLDPLAY, Amy Lee and Evanescence, the FLUX Quartet, as well as being featured on numerous original scores for film. He has also been workshopping new pieces with and for his karate dojo, blending his knowledge and practice of the martial arts, and recently performing that collaboration at Lincoln Center for the Arts.

Especially inspired by the D major Andante of Mozart's D Major String Quartet, the 'Prussian' (K.575), Eggar went to work with Schommer and longtime collaborator and Violinist Rachel Golub figuring out exactly how this music would move with the format of a yoga class. “The salutations and flow parts were the most natural to pick pieces for,” he says. "One of the interesting things we found was that slowing down minuet movements elicited a very powerful emotional response. We started playing some pieces at half tempo, and it was beautiful. For the piece 'Vishranti' (For Savasana) and the album starter, "Om" piece we were presented an opportunity to create something original, based off of Mozart's melodic structure".

One of my favorite devotional songs, but performed with a slight modification.  Instead of "guide your way on", I've used, "guide your way Home".

[Lyrics originally from] "Mike Heron's "A Very Cellular Song", a 13-minute reflection on life, love, and amoebas, whose complex structure incorporates a Bahamian spiritual ("I Bid You Goodnight", originally recorded by the Pinder Family). The last part of "A Very Cellular Song", "May the Long Time Sun Shine", is sometimes wrongly referred to as a Sikh hymn [e.g., Kundalini Yoga devotional made famous by Snatam Kaur] or an Irish [Scottish] blessing, but is, in fact, an original song written by Mike Heron.

MAY THE LONG TIME SUN SHINE UPON YOU COMPLETE MANTRA

"May the long time sun shine upon you,
  All love surround you,
  And the pure light within you, 
  Guide your way on." 

WHY DOES KUNDALINI YOGA CLOSE WITH LONG TIME SUN

Just as every Kundalini Yoga class is started with the Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo mantra, so too is it closed with a dedicated mantra.  It just so happens that the closing mantra is a Scottish blessing. 

So how does a Scottish blessing become the closing mantra of a spiritual practice originating in India? The original song can be credited to a Scottish folk band in the 1960's called The Incredible String Band.  The band regularly toured the USA during the 60's, even playing the famous Woodstock Festival, and made a point of finishing each of their live sets with May the Long Time Sun. 

Around that same time, Yogi Bhajan was introducing the practice of kundalini yoga to the west.  A group of kundalini yogis had formed a group - the Khalsa String Band - and, as Gurudass Singh of Virginia wrote in an Aquarian Times Winter ‘05 issue: "One day as he (Yogi Bhajan) entered the room, a group of yoga students including Guru Singh were playing a round of a piece by the Incredible String Band.  Yogiji asked them to keep playing it, and from then on requested them to play it after his classes.  It quickly became a tradition that continues today at the end of every Kundalini Yoga class taught throughout the world.

The song has now been used worldwide for 47 years to close Kundalini Yoga practices and has inspired generations of musical covers.
