Xiaolin is a DJ, producer, vinyl lover and instrumentalist from Hong Kong.  Driven by a relentless curiosity for warm sounds, complex emotions and colourful textures,  she enjoys crafting magnetic sets that draw audiences into a patiently unfolding journey.  Xiaolin spent a decade studying classical violin, jazz, world music and electronic composition abroad (Juilliard BM’14, Berklee Valencia MM’16) where she played in Batucada/jazz bands and began collecting records. Releases include two EP’s on 宀 Records, a collaborative track on Klasse Wrecks, VA contributions on 20/20 Vision (Exit Planet Earth), Polychrome Audio and Harmony Rec, as well as three 80’s Cantonese tribute EP’s on Sound Metaphors’ “Bless You” imprint (A&R by Jane Fitz).  Xiaolin's trippy club night HEX holds at her home club 宀, where she has played alongside guests such as Polygonia, Peach, Vlada, Liquid Earth and Mozhgan.  Recent highlights include Sound Metaphors' anniversary party at Panorama Bar, Unchained at Blitz Club, Boiler Room HK/Singapore, Rainbow Disco Club 2025.  This mix is a live-recorded opening hour from Xiaolin at 宀 Hong Kong, featuring an all-vinyl mix of trippy, chuggy records from Gilb'r, The Maghreban, Roman Flügel, etc.

After the response from her more downtempo track for our Free Download series we thought it only right to follow up with Xiaolin for a mix for our InSessions series. The Hong Kong native is well-versed in all manner of electronic music spheres, but her penchant lies at the rawer, bleepy end of house music and minimal. As well as these serious club sounds, Xiaolin is also a fine purveyor of more traditional sounds and is a regular face on the Canto Pop scene. 

Recorded live at Mihn Club in Hong Kong, Xiaolin takes control of the atmospheric nightspot from the very beginning of this episode of our mix series. Stripping the action back to the fundamental elements, she injects power moves after power moves into the dancefloor as if priming for tracks that are yet to be introduced. Her unhurried, methodical touch speaks volumes as the next groove and bassline comes thudding into view. While the poppier side of her sound is more carefree, Xiaolin’s mix for our podcast series offers freedom of mind as well as of body.

Xiaolin - Trommel InSession 155

The eleventh. This week we're very excited to welcome Hong Kong native Xiaolin to the podcast. A DJ, producer, and classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Xiaolin has crafted a genre-bending, 2 hour listening journey through a myriad of textures, both deep and dark, showcasing a distinctive selection of tracks from friends and producers based in Asia. The viscous atmospheres, built and crafted bar by bar from the first moments of the mix, are so visceral that one feels they could almost reach out and touch them. The lights dim as we sink to greater and greater depths.

The second half of the mix opens up and capitalises on these elements, newly found sonic spaces filled with an ever changing flow of percussive patterns, a surprise around every corner. The lights flicker. Something has changed. We've been gently guided into new aural territory, perhaps without even realising it. 

Closing out the mix, we're propelled skyward from the depths, towards the light, into a shimmering, dreamlike soundscape. Only at the very last moment do our feet lightly make contact with the earth again as Xiaolin masterfully brings this voyage to a close.

Sit down, get comfortable, and float away.
