Step 2: Go back and erase various parts of the recording from Step 1 by utilizing chance techniques. (For example, you might roll dice: once to determine which of the multitrack parts, once to determine the starting point in the track of the erasure, and once to determine the length of the erasure.)

Disquiet Junto Project 0586: Chance the Eraser

This week's #disquietjunto prompt was to create a new subgenre of techno! I knew I wanted to do "symmetrical techno" pretty much right away. 

I was inspired by the Threechords' Hammerhead Rhythm Station software, which I would mess around with back in the oughts. Not only was it hours of fun, but it was also pretty easy to get a little weird: in particular, reversing the drum samples: I always enjoyed reversing a kick sample against a regular kick sample and and hearing the reversed version "whoosh" into the traditional kick sound.

I took this as the basic principle of "symmetrical techno" and tried to expand it into a framework for a whole track (or genre!). All of the rhythms and pitches flip at some point, but each instrument has its own point(s) of symmetry, usually within each section of the song.

Sometimes I created symmetry by literally reversing a recording, sometimes I made a series of pitches appear in reverse order (aka retrograde).

Also, the overall form is symmetrical: ABCDCBA

Writing under the framework of "whatever you create will then be followed by a flipped version" was a really interesting way to write! Some interesting rhythms emerged, like a snare pattern that isn't quite what you would expect. And the hi-hat pattern is a series of 5 8th notes that interlock with the rest of the drum kit in interesting ways.

What can be surfed? A wavetable synth. This was the starting point for a patch with the virtual modular system miRack. The patch is modulated by some LFOs. Additional surfing theremins for good vibrations and keyboard sounds of an internet surfer...

Disquiet Junto Project 0610: Speed Limit Pt 2
The Assignment: Combine two or more pre-existing 60 BPM tracks into something new — at half the speed.

I selected two tracks that I liked, but more by incident, because I liked many (and most of them felt already finished). But with Refactored Drift from Tristan Louth-Robins (https://soundcloud.com/red_robin/disquiet_junto_0603-refactored-drift-60-bpm) and Transient Melter from ATW (https://soundcloud.com/atw/transient-melter-60bpm-disquiet-0609?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0609) I had the fantasy, that they would make a nice combination of melody and sound. I was very lazy and just slowed them to half speed. I also wanted to keep the result under five minutes, and I wanted both tracks to have some kind of a solo (because the ATW track more or less forced it). I edited and recut in Reaper by taste and justification, and I ignored scales and syncopation correctness (not totally, but they are surely not always "proper"). No additional knick-knacks but some subtile FX.

Begrabe Das Lied (disquiet0618)

These are 2 completely different pieces that somehow sounded like they fit together. At least it felt so at the time. The 1st part, "Pins" is a tightly-strung bass string sound from the Yamaha SY85, and the 2nd part, "Needles", is a bubbly, perky pay off to the buildup from the first part, was done with Absynth, controlled by a Yamaha DS55. It's part sound effects and part song-like, perfect for soundtrack music ... at least the one in my head anyway!
