"Xiphos likes to recount the deeds of the great figures of antiquity, some of them little-known or forgotten. On its latest album, ‘The Age of Alexander’, this project delivers a corpus of new, spellbinding historical episodes. The trio create their scores like a set. The keyboards give colour to the scenes depicted: sometimes heroic and warlike (Artaxerxes, Eumenes), where the martial rhythm and lyrics provide rigorous support for the epic flights of fancy; sometimes instrumental and restrained, like interludes between two tableaux, more inclined to meditation (Timoleon, Phocion).

The voice is the real thread running through this journey, evoking the Attic orators by embodying the story in its various moods: storm, victory, bitterness, trial and glory. The music of Xiphos is akin to a neoclassical martial tale, and the result is an almost cinematic work. In addition to the use of classical orchestration, there is subtle recourse to sounds rooted in traditional Greek music, such as those produced by instruments like the santur or the bouzouki. Lastly, the group's compositions sometimes exude an atmosphere that could be described as Darkwave.

Finally, in a finely woven musical fresco, featuring great destinies, ‘The Age of Alexander’ is a tragic commemoration."

Mi chiamano scaldo
ma in fondo non sanno
né il nome né il giorno
del tremendo inganno.
La gente è distratta,
l’incanto finisce,
le ore ed i giorni
la lira scandisce.
Di Silibrand canto
la vecchia sconfitta,
la neve, il suo manto,
la nebbia più fitta.
In casa è il silenzio
che canta il lavoro,
nel vuoto presenzio
cercando ristoro.
Un uomo cammina nel bosco da solo
diretto a valle con passo deciso
e versa sul suolo il suo sangue d’oro
da quella vena che il tempo ha reciso.
Silibrand, posa la spada di ferro:
ben altre armi ti attendono a valle.
Sul ciglio risposa ed il torso si scopre
della gran pelle d’orso del padre
e slega stivali di cuoio dai piedi
volgendo un ricordo alla povera madre.
Silibrand, lega i tuoi lunghi capelli:
un nuovo rasoio ti attende più a valle.
L’uomo procede da solo, ora indossa
un nuovo volto ed un cappio di seta
che strangola l’uomo lasciandolo in vita
e come una serpe gli scava la fossa.
Silibrand, slega il martello dal collo:
Gli dei d’altri mondi ti attendono a valle.
Mirando al crepuscolo ancora si scorge
la notte più lunga gettarsi sul bosco
e Silibrand, curvo, risorgere a monte
con la stanchezza di mille battaglie.
Vecchio guerriero, immensa mi sembra
la mole del peso che al sonno ti induce
riposa, Silibrand, le stanche membra,
che il buio d’inverno non celi la luce.

The debut album The Rise and Fall of Athens was released in december 2022.
