Caterina Barbieri & Kali Malone - Glory (Final Movement)

An excerpt from "Velocity of Sleep”, Kali Malone’s first full length record featuring a compilation of her compositions for baroque string instruments, gongs and electronics. Slowly unfolding in minimalist form, the record grows as an additive pattern from a single note to a thicket of septimal melodies played on the theorbo and expanded into canon via tape delays. On the B side, gongs are struck lullingly, amounting to shrieks as they’re stroked upon a throbbing foundation of sine waves. The end of the record lands in a spectral monolith of bowed gamba, double bass and viola. Split released by XKatedral and Bleak Environment. Out August 25, 2017. Edition of 100  Records.

Kali Malone - Velocity of Sleep (excerpt)

Mats Erlandsson and Maria W Horn meet as Dufwa in heavy synthesis wielding insect field recordings sourced from the catalonian countryside.  Dufwa’s debut release, Fältinspelningar från Terres de l’Ebre (Field recordings from Terres de I’Ebre), defies the standard conception one might have about field recording music. By means of intricate digital processing, Dufwa scrapes the natural source-bonding from their collected insectoid recording and sonically stretches them on a continuum between drone, noise and generative music.

Isak Edberg’s music is both the mark of time and where it ceases to tick. Ondulations unravels as a dirging circular chord progression that subtly decays and transforms over the span of an hour. Having composed a broad palate of works for electronics, organ, chamber music ensembles and symphonic orchestra - Isak's music is ever constant in weaving elegant harmonic textures  in unabashed ceremonial euphoria.

Isak Edberg - Ondulations (excerpt)

On this tribute tape, Golden Offence Orchestra performs the composition of pioneer American minimalist Pauline Oliveros “To Valerie Solanas and  Marilyn Monroe In Recognition of Their Desperation”. This piece asks the performers to individually choose five pitches and slowly reveal them in long tones. Oliveros gives written directions for the conductor and musicians to engage in  imitation, power play and hierarchical struggles. If anyone becomes dominant, the rest of the group should rise up and absorb that dominance back into the texture of the music, resulting in dense symphonic layers of sustained melancholic tension. Golden Offence Orchestra was active in Stockholm from 2012 - 2014, members heard on this recording include Ellen Arkbro, Elsa Bergman, Isak Edberg, Mats Erlandsson, Marta Forsberg, Lisa Grotherus, Anna Högberg, Kali Malone, Hampus Norén, Marcus Pal, Sara Parkman, and Emma Sildén.

4-track guitar music, consists of an array of pieces for electric guitar augmented by computer and a 4-track tape machine. The music is primarily composed using melodic motifs and canonical structures in which a set of pitches are transposed in octaves and delayed, creating an ever-evolving cyclical polyphony. After the initial recording, the music was re-amplified in the former machine hall of Ställbergs Gruva - a disbanded Swedish iron mine. Now all of the operational machinery is long gone, leaving a large empty hall made of concrete, tile and ice.

Mats Erlandsson - A holographic sky

Zach Rowden in an American musician dealing with the acoustic and performative possibilities of the contrabass. His fierce improvisational approach strips away the raw textural make up of this iconic acoustic instrument, rendering a complex timbral transformation of its sound and a complete obliteration of the listeners own understanding of the sonic potential of the contrabass. Zach’s promising release for XKatedral, “Tasked”, is a brutal harnessing of pyschoacoustic rhythms and microtonality through the minimal instrumentation of contrabass and feedback.

Zach Rowden - Fog area

XKatedral presents the first full-length release of the work of Swedish composer David Granström. In four interrelated pieces, Granström’s new collection of sound work – A distant color, secluded – invites us to take part in the creation and destruction of perceptual worlds; worlds whose interiors are at once manifestations of vast topological complexity, and of minimalist, pure non-dimensionality.

David Granström (b. 1987) is a composer and sound artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. His sound work is characterized by harmonic simplicity and spatio-textural complexity, employing sounds of both synthetic and acoustic origin. Part of Granström’s practice consists in researching new methods for working algorithmically with real-time sound synthesis and precision-tuned harmony, a work which is technically realized by employing tools that he himself develops. Earlier releases of Granström’s sound work includes the limited-edition cassette Ephemeris, also on XKatedral.
