Exec produced by Ron Trent and Jonesy, 'Mother Confessor' is the work of artist, writer and producer Jared Hines — and boy, does it half whiff of your favourite Atmosfear record or the alternative disco sounds of Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L. Any of the EP's five offerings could have ended up on our page today, but it's "Mother Confessor", the gliding opener that wins the ballot this time. Sensuous in all the right places.

I often find it hard to separate the emotional and methodical while making music. So tonight I challenged myself to make a song in an hour (it ended up being an hour and twenty seven minutes); working quickly and without developing the emotional attachments to sounds and ideas that would otherwise keep a production hidden in the deep and dark depths of the hard drive, silently hoping that maybe, just maybe, it might just one day see the light of day. In case you're interested, I was drinking an Estrella beer and eating blueberries and little pieces of cheese.

Black Light Smoke - City Life

Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life - six tracks of affecting, deep vibes. 

'In Gold' is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats.

Title track 'City Life' is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads - as well as a killer vocal. 

'Make My Piece' is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. 

Next one is 'Up In This', starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb's signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones. 

'Without You' is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track wrapping up this journey.

Black Light Smoke- City Life

Who pulls up on the tempo from the original and focuses all laser beams to stun with his take on duo Wayward's new track.
