Musically speaking, dub techno has a haunting, haunted, tripped out site of memorial exploration where everything sounds half-remembered, half-there and half-real. The genre is akin to ambient music, in that music of both genres acts as background music on purpose. The best tracks in the dub techno genre do what little it does amazingly, in that every element in the mix is given breathing space and, accordingly, takes on a sense of the organic.

Pablo Bolivar needs no introduction—he's a true legend in our scene. We've been following and collecting his records since the early to mid-2000s when he was releasing burners on labels like Regular and others.

His seminal self-titled work and collaborations, such as with Pulshar, are some of the finest examples of dub, techno, and deep instrumental music you'll hear.

Over the years, Bolivar has built a reputation for his smooth, melodic, and atmospheric sound. His music has a contemplative and immersive quality, making it a favorite among fans of refined and sophisticated electronic excursions.

Never one to stay idle, he continues to craft and spin exceptional mixes, all while keeping busy with gigs, radio shows, podcasts and releasing music on his labels AvantRoots with Sergio Sainz Vidal and Pablo's own label, Seven Villas.

This mix is a special treat—a recent live (Vinyl Only) recording from Pablo's all-night session at The Deep Room in Santander.

We're thrilled to welcome one of the legends to our mix series and hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

FX-driven Jamaican soundsystems meeting the machines of techno with an abstract sound and loosely repetitive rhythms stucture, along with some usage of low end sonics - that's what dub techno is about. This music is a sonic experience far beyond the narrow pathways of techno, demonstrating that there is a universal code which connects repetitive patterns of organic sounds with club music. With a string of mind-altering atmospheres & warped basses and punchy beats to the fore, this mix is akin to an hallucinatory trip through the farthest reaches of psychedelic electronic music.

Opening this edition, Anastasiia Slustska sets the tone with a slow-burning, dub-influenced set. Spacious, textural, and deliberately paced, her selection draws from the outer edges of techno and ambient, at the soundsystem meeting point.

In the second hour, resident Fran Domingo (Hakk) picks up the thread and gradually tightens the focus. His mix builds tension through ambient sounds, charred breakbeat, chugging electro, and lisergic chants of the rave continuum.

As August begins, summer's golden days are still here, full of promise and hope. As we move into the peaceful months ahead, we're excited to welcome the talented Spanish artist Pablo Bolivar to our 320th episode in the series.

“A modern master of house and techno, Seven Villas founder Pablo Bolivar is know equally well as an album artist and prolific remixer, but perhaps foremost as a world class DJ. With artistic breadth and worldwide appeal, it is clear that Pablo was born to create music, always with an attitude, and always with quality as a standard.”
Boasting more than a decade of experience releasing music, Pablo Bolívar is a name familiar to most in the underground circuit of Dance music. Born in Santander, Spain, in 1981, he took his first steps into the music business by studying Sound Engineering at Barcelona’s Crash institute, then working as an engineer for a number of years following his graduation in 2000.
After a while, Pablo began working at one of Spain’s most recognised Electronic imprints, Decoder Muzique. Following this, in 2006 he released his debut LP via Barcelona label Regular, entitled ‘Anjanas’. The 11-track album showcased his melodic, hypnotic and intriguing style of Techno that has over the years become synonymous with his name, panning between ambient sections and tougher, more club-driven moments with a real maturity and understanding of music that only comes from studying the art at its core.
In 2009, Pablo released his critically acclaimed and personal favourite LP, ‘Recall’, also via Regular. The album saw him once again nod to past influences such as Heiko Laux and his Kanzleramt label as well as other German imprints such as Chain Reaction, but also was deeply inspired by the passing of his father.
Since then, the Spaniard has gone from strength to strength, with further releases on Curle Recordings, as well as on Desolat, Culprit, Einmusika, Moodmusic, Endless as well as via his own labels, Seven Villas and Avantroots, also remixing the likes of Gui Boratto, Mario Basanov, When Saints Go Machine, Gorge, Parov Stelar or Juana Molina to name a few.
Outside of music production, the gifted Spaniard has built up a reputation for his meticulously crafted DJ performances, combining his own mesmerising Techno cuts with records unearthed from his regular excursions crate digging as well as from other artists such as Floating Points, Soulphiction, I:Cube and Vakula – modern names that he is a big personal fan of.

Roebin de Freitas has been prolific as of late and more is yet to come. The second EP of Perfidious for instance, is a three tracker full of (un)conventional techno music.

Based on Steven Pinker's 'The Better Angels of Our Nature', the EP opens shop with an offbeat kick followed by an eerie and intricate synth pad called 'Circle of Sympathy'. Quirky and snappy percussion adds that splash of energy making this track excellent for some high brow dance floor action.

'Zero-sum Game' is full of game and will have you reaching for that gain. The droned out bass line and fast arpeggiated bells set the pace relentlessly. No way back!

Third and final track 'Parent-offspring conflict' is the hidden treasure of this EP. A broody bass is at the core when the clap slaps your right in the face. Waves and splashes of synth pads come crashing in more and more for that outer body experience to come through. It will have you yearning for more...

As we turn to the next episode. Eric arranged to meet his father in a cold abandoned warehouse on an industrial estate on the other side of town, a building he knew only too well from just a couple years back. He’d been hanging out with his squatter mates and this is one of a few places they’d frequent. He’d been up to no good well that’s what his father used to say anyway. “I knew you’d come to nothing, you little piece of shit” his father said. “I gave everything to you and this is how you treat me, you ungrateful backstabbing waste of space”, as he sat there cable tied to an old wooden chair, rocking on its uneven legs, now knowing he had been lured under false pretences. “But did you really give me everything?”, Eric said as he sat there staring at canvas sack that covered his father’s disturbed and angered face, whilst he held his gun casually on his lap contemplating his next move…

The soundtrack is the first contribution by Stephanie Sykes of the Midlands, UK. With a history behind her connection to Prodigal Son, she steps up with two of her most impactful pieces to date, “Walking Alone” & “Glimmer Of Existence”. A mind full of inspiration, of sounds taken in from recent ventures and a wealth of experience from her residencies. Having had a very special 2016 this is only the beginning for Stephanie and a sampler for what’s to come. Her tracks are remixed on the flipside of the record, the brutality of South Londoner, Ansome, with his version of “Walking Alone”. Then the melodies of “Glimmer Of Existence” takes a philharmonic reworking from one of Glasgow’s finest Edit Select.
