AXEL H & CAO BRAVO presents: El Mundo de Quilca

Peru, a country with a rich geographic and cultural diversity, is mostly known to the international music community as the epicenter of cumbia and its psychedelic variants. Unknown to most, a handful of groups have experimented with sounds related to disco and synth-pop in the 80s that were unpopular at the time and thus have mostly been forgotten over the years. 

@axelhaxel (@kitchensessions_int), an epidemiologist and collector residing in Lima, has spent the last 6 years digging records in Quilca, a small and dusty gallery in the center of Lima with improvised vinyl stalls, as well as sourcing records from elsewhere across Peru.

Sharing a common interest to explore Peruvian "Disco" output, Axel has teamed up with @caobravo, a surgeon and well-respected record collector across Latin America, to record “El Mundo de Quilca” a vinyl-only mix of neglected and often impossible-to-find Peruvian disco gems, exploring a variety of different styles, moods, and energy levels. 

Some of the tracks in this mix will be featured in an upcoming compilation to be released in early 2023 on @buhrecords, a Peruvian label run and curated by Luis Alvarado, who has provided valuable insights into this mix.

This is the live recording of my sundowner at Zmar this year. Thanks so much again to @zmarfestival organizers and busy bees for creating this weekend-magic and bringing together one the funniest and loveliest crowd I've played for this year. 

EQing might sound a bit weird - I beg your pardon. I took more care of peoples ears than for the recording. But I tried my best make it edible after and hope it's enjoyable now.

The great ears of John Gomez were introduced to us via our office stablemate Mr Bobby Pleasure. Mr Gomez is a selector of the highest order and runs the Tangent parties with Nick The Record with a bag of wax tricks you'll most likely never have or need to have heard of. This is what DJs are all about in the age of the Beatport generation, people that educate your ears with nuggets never heard before. He hosts the Rush Hour Takeovers on NTS and is a regular selector at London audiophile hot spot Brilliant Corners, which recently saw him go head-to-head and back-to-back with the venerable record bags of the Invisible City DJs and Floating Points. We thought it about time he made Monday OK at R$N towers so here is his mandate... plus a proper plus a proper chat with John n all...
