The calendar only flipped to December a few days ago, but it seems that much of the music world has already begun to set its sights on the end of the year. More specifically, everyone seems to be looking back at the last 11 months and evaluating what pieces of music were amongst the year’s best. XLR8R is no different, and when our list of 2013’s best releases surfaces during the next few weeks, there’s little question that Amygadla, the long-awaited sophomore LP from DJ Koze, will make the cut. It’s been a big year for the veteran German producer, which is why we thought he would be an excellent candidate to put together the final XLR8R podcast of 2013. Over the past decade, DJ Koze has built up a reputation as a sort of lovable oddball, and this exclusive mix will do nothing to contradict that image. Much like his own work, the podcast is loosely rooted in house and techno, but its 70-plus minutes of music also reaffirm that Koze isn’t someone who’s afraid to color outside the lines. Armed with a playful spirit and a genuine sense of humor, Koze seems as comfortable dropping esoteric spoken word and bizarre outtakes from Marvin Gaye as he does stringing together warm slices of rich, organic house music. Oh yeah, he also manages to slip in a couple of conscious hip-hop tracks along the way. I ve selected 25 tracks which features vocalists (and some vocal samples) like Paul St-Hilaire and Benji. This is slowly meandering spacedub with deep, peaceful and dreamy lush ambient pads and dubby basslines. Though the old Rhythm & Sound influence is still clear—especially on the track Child was I—but what these producers are making truly feels fresh.

OIBAF & WALLEN, who need no introduction created a rework full of tension from the word go, as the atmospheric vibe subtly keeps you moving with warm tinkling sounds, a smooth edge and some nicely effected sounding pieces. We basically have the formula for a bit of a monumental outing. The sparseness is the key here, as their restrained gem works its magic while it plays away, creating a warm glow, creating an air of sophistication. "Essential stuff!"

Next up we have Paul Sawyer, the English maestro known for his polished sound, keeps the ethereal theme of the original alive, as the pulsating bass powers along, before its drum fills and general warmth all combine to do the talking. Like something from yesteryear, yet sounding fresh – His transcendent touch up takes the energy levels up a notch, but increases the melancholy with stripped back and lucid elements at the same time, before the luscious pads grace the rework changing the vibe and creating a blanket of warmth that wraps around the effected groove.

Last but not least we have a remix courtesy of Arash Shadram, who delivers a trademark deep melodic mix with infectious chords, intense drums and smooth breakdown. It's all about the groove, cool melodic vibes and the driving beats that are working their magic around Arash Shadram's wonderfully arranged keys that create an irresistible rhythm while clever chords take the mind on a trip. 

With 'Arizona' William Medagli, Thallulah & Shemsu really show that there're no boundaries, as this beautiful melodic gem guides you to a full-on club laden, melodic hug of a release that will cause many smile induced moments!
