Again we search into West Coast skies to an artist reaching for them. To Los Angeles, to Katie Gately, still in the throes of academe we find her, playing at new pop forms. This here record in July bloom is a bold and exciting taster of what is in store, around the corner. Six tracks of frightening ambition. A prime distillation in computer-music-pop. More alarming – this is her debut release, she has been making organised sound for just over a year.

Screech ,crumble, gurgle, crack…. the opening track “Ice” a storm of cluster tones and sequenced-bursts sets the standard. Then, to a potential Top10 smasher… gone mutant. “Last Day” is the first time we hear Katie’s voice, first looped and torn, then glowing, euphoric and beaming from deep inside a crashing-banging-beat system… I awoke from a little hole underneath the earth…

We follow similar patterns across this half-dozen. Fractured vocalisations, bittersweet harmonies, freaked alien voices all living, breathing in deep fried motherboards of acute computer programming and field sound. “Dead Referee” finds Katie on a post-apocalypse Basketball court, destroying waves of squeaks and crunches and cuts with a vocal refrain of high beauty, it Knifes through the noise.

Then, to “Left Half” the haunting reverb-calm before storm…. I’m gonna’ sew your face to my heart she whispers… “Stems” closes the record in a riot of tone and interference and alien acappella.

This is a new approach toward brighter days, mangled, beautiful, sun-reaching 23C Pop Musik for troubled times.

For the month of April's 'Live' mix we welcome 2 legends from the dub techno scene that we were super happy to welcome behind the Eastern Bloc Decks.

First up 'Ohm' (bjarnar jonsson) the Icelandic producer who has been heavily involved within the scene for the past 30 years steps up with releases on some of dub techno's biggest hitters including Thule records, Kontakt, Taped Artifact, Vade mecum, Vuo records and AE Recordings which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records. A label owner himself his 'Ohm Series' label has been steadily releasing music since 2021.

Alongside him 'Kvadrant' (Johnny Fredsgaard) a Danish producer who was a resident on the legendary TweakFM, and runs one of the most healthy and well respected dub techno labels out there currently- Kontakt records. With past artists including - Substance, Mike Schommer, Grad_U, Ohm, VRIL, JS Zeiter, Luke Hess & Octal Industries.

I'm sure you'll agree it's a beautifully put-together 4 hours of deep washy goodness.

" Myself and Johnny came over to honour an invite from our brothers in Music : Quadrant Soundscape. When we first came the place felt small, a little pub thing, but we felt good, the vibe in there just felt good. The hosts started playing some good tracks, the sound system felt big in such a small place. 

We started and it got packed, in such a way that it felt perfect to play some records for the crowd. I love small clubs with big systems and Eastern Bloc was the real deal. Four hours we played, one record at a time and the mood and vibe just kept building. Lots of happy people listening and dancing, it felt surreal and I would do it over and over again. "

"Chicago native Justin Aulis Long discovered his fascination for uncanny music at an early age when his mother entrusted him with her record collection that spanned from UK punk to American dance. This  served as a gateway, stimulating his journey into the sonic vortex. As a child of Medusa’s on Sheffield, Long gained a higher level of musical education. His weekly pilgrimages to this venue’s all-ages hedonistic dance parties supplied a compelling musical concoction of acid house, UK bleep, industrial and new wave. Possessed by these unorthodox forms of music, Long purchased his first set of turntables and began to collect 12-inch singles from local record shops. Though his intentions were solely to pander to his musical appetite in the privacy of his bedroom, this acquisition proved to be the genesis of a voyage that continues to present him with new challenges that are met with an unforgiving dogmatic approach.

Long cut his teeth during the early 90’s at many of Chicagos Infamous DIY and underground warehouse raves. pulling selections from a variety of his musical influences and interests. Eventually graduating to take residencies at many of the cities established club venues and landing a residency at Smart Bar where he is currently the longest consecutive resident."

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

This week, in our "Delayed with..." series, we're veering into the house music lane. Just as the sun starts to linger a bit longer, Kaap, a core member of Amsterdam-based collective De Lichting, guides us through a journey of classic house tunes perfectly suited for these "still shy" but splendidly sunny days. 
It's a trip back to NYC's legendary Cielo in the early 2000s, where DJs pushed perfectly tuned Funktion-One sound system to its limits on nights like this. Remember those epic breakdance battles erupting in the middle of the floor? Yeah, that's the energy Kaap captures.
