Musically speaking, dub techno has a haunting, haunted, tripped out site of memorial exploration where everything sounds half-remembered, half-there and half-real. The genre is akin to ambient music, in that music of both genres acts as background music on purpose. The best tracks in the dub techno genre do what little it does amazingly, in that every element in the mix is given breathing space and, accordingly, takes on a sense of the organic.

Once a teenage prodigy in the early 2000s electronic scene, Norfolk producer Nathan Fake has gone on to garner a worldwide following while establishing himself as a pivotal figure in UK dance culture. After the huge popularity of his 'Blizzards' album, which was described by some as his best work to date upon its release last year, Nathan is on the cusp of dropping his 'Blizzards Remixes' EP, out November 19. As well as featuring remixes from Afrodeutsche, Irène Drésel, and more, Fake's forthcoming project includes his newly released homage to early 90s Orbital and British techno, 'Sandstone'.

Chalking the latest in our series of mixes, Nathan turns in a mouth-watering selection of dance heaters, cartwheeling between ambient, techno, house and beyond as the DJ explores everything from club-ready anthems to left-field gems.

New Year’s Eve is here and in honour of the occasion, we’re forgoing our characteristically downtempo Sunday Mix for a special weekend instalment of our flagship series, with Max Cooper at the controls. Bookmark this one for whatever you have in store for this evening – or any other occasion, of course.

In his own words, the innovation-driven producer and visual artist opts for a “psychedelic techno adventure” featuring tracks from JakoJako, Barker, Oliver Coates, Rival Consoles, ANNĒ and Venetian Snares. “Lots of melodies and beautiful feelings to get lost in," Cooper begins, "but also lots of unexpected turns and mind-mangling soundworlds, and plenty of genre-hopping so you never quite know what's around the next corner."

Dub techno is sometimes produced with vocals resulting in surprinsingly good results more than often. I ve selected 25 tracks which features vocalists (and some vocal samples) like Paul St-Hilaire and Benji. This is slowly meandering spacedub with deep, peaceful and dreamy lush ambient pads and dubby basslines. Though the old Rhythm & Sound influence is still clear—especially on the track Child was I—but what these producers are making truly feels fresh.
