My musical culture swings somewhere between Brussels and Dakar. I spent 10 years in Senegal. There I run a music shop, co-organised the monthly "Koulgraoul" parties and co-hosted radio shows. Step by step, African music has become a real passion. Back in Belgium, I specialized in records sale, being dj regularly for African and Tropical parties. And I really enjoy mixing at Kiosk Radio every month!
By the way, "XOGN" comes from Wolof (Senegalese language). That's what we call grilled rice. So, it means "cooking-pot bottom" ("Fond de marmite")...where my spicy records come from!

South African Disco & Kwaito 🇿🇦 Townships energy! Freedom synergy!

I am not a kwaito specialist, but it is definitely one of my favourite musical styles. It is a unique mixture of South African rhythms, hip-hop and house (garage!). I deeply love its power. Townships energy! Born in Soweto in the early 90s, this music is closely linked to the political context : the end of apartheid, the liberation of Nelson Mandela. Freedom synergy!

In Senegal, I used to play one or two kwaito tunes in parties (on CD only) and people really enjoyed it. For this mix, I chose to play vinyls only. It begins with some late 80s disco tracks. Then, I selected some original records from the 90s (hard to find, at the time, vinyl production was very limited). And recent reissues for the last part (thanks to Afro Synth Records, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Invisible City Edition, La Casa Tropical...). First and last song by the fabulous Brenda Fassie. I'm so happy to share this passion with you. Enjoy. It's party time!

About this journey :
It's a real pleasure to be invited by Comsovision Records. Thanks a lot.
How does one interpret "Tradiciones", the theme of the series ? In its first sense, tradition is the (collective) memory of what has been and must be transmitted and enriched. History, culture, music. Sharing allows for rememberance. Tradition and transmission become one. My particular history with Senegal naturally turns me towards this country. And my love for Cape Verde makes me want to take you there too. Geographical proximity, bilateral diaspora, common history. And, on both sides, a music to stir your guts. So I dug in the bottom of my (cooking) pot to extract some records from the 70s and 80s. 
Hoping to make you discover some of them... and want to taste more.
To the sound of percussions, the journey begins in the forest of Casamance. It continues in the River Valley, around baobabs of the Serer country, in the streets of Thies, up to the port of Dakar. Latin rhythms mingle with those of the sabar, the energy of the tama collides with the praise of the griots. The voices of Laba Sosseh and Pape Seck flirt with those of Youssou Ndour and Omar Pene. Salsa and mbalax become one.
Fonseca (of Senegalese mother and Cape Verdean father) then invites us to raise the anchor. We leave the land, we take the sea. Islands under the wind meet Islands in the wind. From the volcano of Fogo to the bay of Mindelo, calm follows the storm, joy unites with sadness. Guided by the cadences of coladeira, tabanka, funana, cumbia. Lulled by the songs of Bana and Cesaria. Fatteliku (memory) and sodade (nostalgia) become one.

Back to the 90s. My arrival in Brussels, first steps in a record shop, first dj sets, parties at the Fuse and the Full Moon... So many new musical spheres : soul, funk, trip-hop, dub, jungle, house...
For this set, I wanted to return to this house-garage world discovered then. I chose classics that I have been carrying atound for 25 years and other recent discoveries. Finally, it's all about love."

XOGN worked in a record store (Arlequin) for a few years (early 90's) in Brussels, while being dj and party organizer. He spent 10 years in Senegal (1996-2006). He owned a music store in Dakar and created a monthly party called "koulgraoul". He also had 2 radio shows (Walfadjri + Oxyjeunes).
Back in Belgium in 2006, he specialized in African music, selling records and being dj regularly for African and Tropical stages : Canicule Tropicale (Montreal), Turning Point (Toronto), Afrikatage (Heidelberg), Massimadi (Brussels)...

He co-organize "Afro-Heat" (with Dj ReeDoo) and "Koulgraoul" (with Funky Bompa) parties. And he really enjoy mixing at Kiosk Radio every month!

Usually more focused on African music, I wanted to make a special mix for Island Time Radio. So, it's entirely dedicated to Island music, from the Caribbean Sea to the Indian Ocean (including Cape Verde and Sao Tome).
Disco and funky vibes in the first part, cadence and latin rhythms in the second part. 100% vinyl with tunes that, as far as I know, have not yet been reissued. And now ... let's play!

Island Time Radio: Mix 24 with XOGN

🇧🇪 This is not a mix! This is a love set! It's a sharing of some records I've loved (and bought in two awesome shops in Brussels - Crevettes Records and Balades Sonores) over the past year. A music sharing. It presents exclusively Belgian-based artists - labels - productions. Almost 100% vinyl (two digital tracks provided by the artists themselves), electronic music mostly, 2020 edition mainly (a few from summer 2019). Obviously, it does not represent the diversity of musical production in Belgium. But, through a part of this local scene, I wanted (and I tried) to celebrate the wonderful cultural diversity of "my" country (three institutional communities, three official languages) and Brussels (which is, with 180 nationalities represented, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world). There's a stream in the universe circulating with an ever flowing rhythmic structure. You can swim in it and take off with a piece of forbidden knowledge. It will interchange with what you bring and manifest itself in sound. Like in this excellent mix from XOGN where he digs into a deep cosmic rhythms session.

XOGN is a DJ and selector from Brussels, Belgium and we asked for a mix when we heard his recent mix for Island Time Radio.
