Shining crown jewels in Tel Aviv's underground scene, Red Axes' artistic endeavours have slowly but surely been revitalising Israeli music culture. Their output's calibre sets the bar inexorably high — epitomised by the stripped-back disco bomb “Waiting for a Surprise” which stirred up a ruckus this exact time last year. So much so that techno don Audion was compelled to lay his grace on the dub. Spurred on by a bouncy bass line, swirling electronics and agile percussive workouts darting all over the joint, Audion’s production lab mastery is heard crystal clear throughout.

Forthcoming on Waiting For A Remix (which includes reworks by Moscoman, Manfredas and Thomas Von Party) this bag of goodies drops through @multiculti digitally on October 3rd, followed up by wax on October 27th.

Craig Bratley has been carving out a distinct and somewhat peculiar discography since his debut release ‘Free Music’ landed in 2004. The foundations of his tracks are often weighty and driving, leaving the outer layers to go intricately wild.  

Andrew Weatherall stands tall among British dance music’s most prominent figures. He’s been killing it for decades, and shows no signs of stopping. ‘Play The Game (Andrew Weatheral remix)’ stretches the track out into a mesmerising, 10-minute masterpiece that goes both minimal and maximal as it traverses through spidery percussive lines and crashing guitar chords. For his next release on Soundway Records, Los Angeles-based Dexter Story hooks up with long time friend and compatriot of music, the saxophonist, jazz composer, producer and band-leader Kamasi Washington. A fierce, rumbling electro Ethio-Funk groove provides the platform for an intense and powerful interplay between Washington on tenor sax and Todd Simon on trumpet. 

An instrumental cover version of Tilahun Gessesse's 1970s cut of the same name, it's Story's homage to the oppressed Oromo people of Southern Ethiopia. Backed on the flip by the one cut from Story's 'Wondem' long-player that did not make it to vinyl when the LP version was cut, Nia Andrew's sublime and atmospheric collaboration on Eastern Prayer will keep all those happy who grumbled at it's exclusion from wax first time around. 

This is a record that no lover of Ethio-Jazz, Afro-Beat or Funk should be excused for not owning.

From the church to the library, it's now time for 'A Sweet Excursion', courtesy of our favourite French funkateers, DJ Soulist & Fulgeance aka Souleance, offering up three tasty edits to feed the dancefloor.

'Fantasie' opens the set with an idyllically relentless rhodes-riff riding a slice of sugary boogie, with a super squelchy bassline and a healthy layer of disco percussion spread on top, for those with a sweet tooth.

The righteous horns of 'Lord' blaze into play next accompanied by a 4/4 disco kick, before the sugar rush kicks in and the band let loose an almighty groove. Even a soulful set of angels begin to sing, guaranteeing this one will bring out a lil' bit of that holy ghost within.

We end out with 'Funkin' which does exactly what it says on the tin. A solid five minutes-plus of delectable heads-down funk containing all the right ingredients, and the French duo's own special sauce mixed into the pot for good measure.

With a decades worth of collaboration behind them, and persistent party rocking at festivals and clubs, Souleance continue to create tried & tested moments of sweetness on dancefloors across the globe. This three-tracker is no exception, and makes this another essential one for the record bags.

'A Sweet Excursion' is released on Excursions on Friday 6th July 2018 on limited three-track vinyl 12" only.
