In Kansas City, Libraries Aren't Just For Books Anymore

Jungala Radio is based in an unofficial refugee camp in Calais, France, which the media refers to as “the Jungle” or “the migrant camp known as the Jungle”. In July 2016, a census conducted by NGO Help Refugees, revealed there were 7,037 people living in the camp a number which has steadily increased over the summer months. 

Virtually no financial or infrastructural aid is being given by any European government or large NGO. While the French government provide accommodation for around 1,500 people, mainly in communal converted shipping containers, the large majority of refugees are left living in tents and shelters built by small volunteer organisations. Living conditions in the camp do not meet the UN standards for refugee camps, due to a lack of sanitation and infrastructure.

Jungala Radio was developed as a communicative platform for refugees to engage, create and challenge dominant mainstream narratives, by producing their own digital content and asserting full editorial autonomy over their voices.

All doubt concerning the corruption of political authorities create s another doubt, and they stimulate the public’s anger, after all. These infectious emotions between the crowd have spread to the waves of candlelights against covering up the corruption of government, as time goes on. As one of participants in candlelight protest demanding president Park’s resignation on Gwanghwamun square in Seoul, I intended to represent the infectiousness of doubt and hybridity of tacit gestures in square, in Infectious. In the beginning section decribes the consipirancy of ‘concealment’, concerning sluggish response of government on 'Sewol' ferry disaster (2014). Signal jamming by white noise represents deliberate interruption to cover up the real reasons for disaster, which means the collapse of fair administration system. Especially the voice of witness and the testimony are inserted including morse code which means ‘save me’ message and drone sounds. The next section expresses the vast waves of candlelights in square. It means expanded signal for ‘change’. Based on repeated arpeggio pattern which describes the waves of candlelights in square, the second part represents hybridity on square and the movements of ‘runaway’ from bad habits, regardless of job, age, sexuality, Lastly, sharp zipper sounds and scattered sonic grains are distorted with various voices. including the groudless pledge and political deception.
