Feel The Bern

Unofficial release of a recording that is a part of a recording project about my experience growing up a Black Puerto Rican womanchild in the Boogie Down, the Bronx in the height of the crack and AIDS epidemics in the 80s. 

I've imagined what Ode to the DiaspoRican could sound like and how it could be recorded. I'm deeply honored to have inspired other musicians to create songs from my hook, No nací en Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico nacío en mi. (Gracias Tato Torres y Yerba Buena for being the first and created a Bomba the I love and that is loved by many!) I believe it was Yerba Buena's song that led a musician to win the MacArthur Genius Award. He used my hook for a jazz piece that garnered a lot of attention.  It's amazing that many young women in their teens have covered the poem and put it up on youtube! It's surreal and deeply moving to see other people cover the poem. 

And now with immense pride, I'm doing it my way. Finally! And the genre I've always dreamed of recording it with musical accompaniment, a big up to my Bronx 70s memories of my mother, and listening to her play her albums in the living room, where she'd run from the kitchen to flip the 33 record, dance a couple of steps and run back to the kitchen to finish cooking rice and beans. Thank you Ma! For me, bugalu is quintessential Nuyorican music and though the title of this poem and tune is Ode to the DiaspoRican, I am extremely proud of my Nuyorican roots and sense of time and place, and that in many ways, Nuyoricans paved the way. It started here.  We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Johnny Colon and Joe Cuba and many others who popularized the genre. They do not get enough credit. 

Thank you Fred Ones, Angel, my Tio Timbales and all the musicians who worked with me. Thank you for your encouragement. Know the love and respect is mutual and I look forward to future collaborations. I also want to give thanks to my family, my sisters, my brother, my healing communities, my friends, my sister-brother-poets, activists and healers and all my people who, over the years have let me know how much Ode to the DiaspoRican has touched them. I've been overwhelmed with stories of people who've told me Ode to the DiaspoRican is up in their barbershop, beauty parlor, church, Abuela's altar or they've gotten tattoos with the Puerto Rico nacío en mi

I know that when I wrote this poem, many years ago, I dedicated it to "Mi gente". During this time of uncertainty, crisis and upheaval in Puerto Rico and the diaspora and the world, it is more clear than ever how much we, Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, love our isla and our people. Puerto Rico was born in us. We, myself and the musicians, who gave their hearts in recording this joint, we dedicate this to Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans EVERYWHERE!!! I hope you enjoy grooving to this. Please share!

In this week's issue of the Phoenix -- the Queer Issue -- we profiled local transgender political folk-punk singer Evan Greer. Greer has toured nationally and internationally for over ten years, using folk music as a tool for supporting radical social movements, fighting sexism, racism, homophobia, climate change, and more. Along with the article, we asked Greer to make a mixtape of her favorite queer and queer-friendly artists. "Here’s a little mixtape of queer and pro-queer artists from hip-hop to punk and back again, all with a radical social justice edge," says Greer. "These are almost all folks who I’ve toured with, played with, or collaborated with and who I love as people as well as artists. Hope you like it!" 

Track 5 on the mix is by "Back to the Roots", a project where Greer collaborates with hip-hop artist Spiritchild. "Maybe it’s messed up to include a musical project that I’m part of in my own mix tape, but I’m so excited about the music that I’m making with South Bronx freedom singing hip-hop artist Spiritchild that I just really wanted to share it with you!" wrote Greer. "Plus with all the pink-washing of the colonial settler state of 'Israel' that’s been happening in the news lately, (including the Boston LGBTQ Film Festival taking money from the Israeli Consulate), I thought it was important to include an anti-racist, anti-zionist song from a queer artist."
