"Generation X. That doesn’t mean you did grow up with Breakfast Club and 80s music. It also means that you’re one of this people in-between: Between the boomers and the millennial. Between those mostly clueless out internet and those living their complete life online. Between loving the big V8 engines and embracing electric vehicles… and talking about cars, that’s where I was heading originally…”

Despite the fact that he crossed the Atlantic by ship before the age of 3 and though there exists photographic evidence showing him in a rubber dinghy in Brazil aged 4, Christian Leyk didn’t really grow up with boats. He loved the oceans and the beach, but he also loved the nature of the Bavarian mountains where he grew up. But inspiration can be found everywhere, you just need to open your eyes and never stop being curious.

Having studied Industrial Design in Munich (together with a few semesters of mechanical engineering, backed up by rebuilding a little Japanese 4x4 as a hobby to get the hands dirty), Christian could have ended up working for BMW or Audi. But that’s when be (re) discovered yachts…

After finishing his degree, he went to London to work for Evan Marshall and then he reconnected with newcruise in Hamburg, where he was a trainee before. In the 5 years running their more or less secret ‘think tank’ in Mallorca, he designed yachts like Triple Seven, Siren and the 115m explorer ‘Luna’ together with Frank Neubelt.

Then Ken Freivokh gave him a call. In the following 10 years Christian didn’t just design Ken’s legendary Christmas cards and the logo for Ken’s alpaca business, but he was also the designer on who’s computer screen unique concepts like Stiletto (for Oceanco), Fortissimo (with Fincantieri) und last but not least the 106m sailing yacht ‘Black Pearl’ were born.

But Christian remains curious about new challenges, so he accepted a 2 year contract with a well known designer to project manage the build of a large explorer yacht currently under construction in Germany.

“Coming up with exciting concepts is fairly easy. But I want to be prepared to offer my clients the complete package. I call myself a ‘professional dreamer’, helping them to translate their wish to have a yacht that reflects them perfectly into images and drawings that enable the passionate and highly skilled people in our industry to make this dream come true.”

In October 2019 Christian packed his suitcases again and moved with his wife and his 3 year old son to Valencia, where he is about to open his own design studio, with the plan to make this exciting city his home and a new fix point in the yachting world. And yes, occasionally he’s still designing cars.

Highs and lows in this week's Crew Stories, Tristan tells us about his birthday trip to the Bahamas then flying to Fort Lauderdale with a friend to look for a job. After realising his US visa didn't allow him to work and heading home, they are left stranded with no money and no place to stay. 

At the airport a good samaritan from Virgin helps out, taking them back to his house, giving them dinner, a room for the night and a chance to earn their keep. Slowly they learn more about their saviour. After losing touch, Tristan has been paying it forward ever since. Was it you?!
