For over 45 years , the Quiet Storm radio format has been one of the most recognizable institutions in black music.
It’s something that black communities can identify both sonically and culturally. Whether it be the jazz-influenced ballads, lush love songs, or smooth voices from its DJs, whenever the sun sets, we know that the Quiet Storm is approaching.
I wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Black History Month by honoring the Quiet Storm’s origin story, and that story begins in 1976 Washington D.C. with a Howard student named Melvin Lindsay. While standing in for a WHUR radio DJ one night, an inexperienced Lindsay filled the airwaves with slow jams from his record collection, immediately sparking a radio revolution. He dedicated his life to sharing what he called “beautiful black music” to the world. Although we lost Lindsay to the AIDS epidemic, his voice and his music has lived on ever since that night in 1976.
This all vinyl mix is a collection/curation of love songs Linsday played himself in the Quiet Storm’s early years as well as songs from my family’s collection that I’d thought to be a perfect fit.
Every single record is special to me, him, and his legacy and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by playing some of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard.

This all-vinyl mix is the second installment of love songs from my family’s collection, along with records Lindsay himself played during the early years of The Quiet Storm. While this mix leans more toward my interpretation of those moments, every record holds deep meaning to me, to him, and to his legacy.
For a more historically accurate experience, I highly recommend listening to volume one. But for now, what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with more of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard?

I've got another Black History Month treat for you—my House Music is Black Music set. After reading about its Black, queer origins in Last Night a DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster, I’ve gained an even deeper appreciation for what house represents for Black American communities. This gospel, soul, and R&B house mix is an ode to that legacy—uplifting, soulful, and featuring some of my favorite vocalists in the gospel and R&B space. Inspired by pioneers like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, and Larry Levan, this mix carries forward the spirit they helped create. MAGIC is a multi-instrumentalist and DJ originally hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. From the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. where she honed her craft while pursuing a degree in music, MAGIC's journey has been nothing short of dynamic.

Drawing from her extensive musical background, she not only ignites dance floors but also lends her expertise to scoring documentaries and theatrical productions, infusing each project with her signature blend of vision and intensity.

This passion has led her center stage with Femme Fatale, a party series out of Washington D.C. focused on celebrating the lives of LGBTQ+ communities through music and movement. She also commands the stage on nationwide tours with R&B ONLY LIVE, an exhilarating live show celebrating the rich legacy of R&B music.

Outside of performing, MAGIC has worked with renowned organizations such as The Recording Academy and The Atlanta Braves. With her diverse talents and infectious energy, Magic has embarked on a mission to captivate audiences and rewrite the boundaries of music with each set.
