Fuck You Pt II

A remix of Child Bite's "Blow Off The Omens," made possible by ISOLATE/CREATE.

I hadn't mixed – let alone REmixed – anything in like a decade, but Sean and Shawn from CB are old buds, and I got psyched when I heard about the opportunity. Plus, it's not like I can leave the house right now.

From the outset, it occurred to me that "remix" can mean a lot of different things, so I started by setting a few rules for myself:

1. I limited myself to sounds from the original recording. Some parts (e.g. the drums) should be easily recognizable; I basically just grabbed a few measures of something I liked and used them over and over (and OVER AND OVER) again. Other parts (e.g. the bass) got pretty chopped up.

2. I didn't want to mess with the overall flow of the vocals. As a result, the "structure" of the song remains mostly the same. I think I cut pretty much every instrumental section, though.

3. I didn't change much about the actual mix, because it already sounded AWESOME. And because I didn't want to go down a rabbit hole of plug-ins on my laptop. I can't leave the house, but I do still have, like, a family and friends and stuff.

And so I made this: Blow Off The Omens (Joseph II Mix)

You know that scene in Miloš Forman's Amadeus, where the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II tells Mozart that The Marriage of Figaro has too many notes? And you're supposed to think “Christ, what an asshole." Well, I am that asshole. I took their song, and I removed all the notes. I removed all the nuance. All that's left is texture. Instead of a song, it's now a horrible white noise machine to put a fucked-up baby to sleep.

And that fucked-up baby is all of us.
