The whole band (Odin) had rented a house near Ochsenfurt (Gaukoenigshofen) where we had a nice practice room. One late evening I was fooling around with a very small and simple gadget called "Stylophone", that I had taken apart so that I could put my fingers on the various parts on the circuitboard, thus altering the tone. Wearing headphones, but also using the reverb of the Hammond organ as an effect, I did not realise that the speaker of the organ was also on. Thus my "creative output" of several takes to a 4-track reel-to reel blasted out into the village until the early morning, as I had gotten quite carried away with the possibilities of the sounds.
The next day our landlord called on me and told me: "Das kann teuer werden..."

In September 1890, Susan and John Dunham of Tolland sold “a piece of land on the north side of the highway known as Dog Lane” to the fourth district for a schoolhouse.  They were paid $50 for it. The Dog Lane School served the Storrs community until 1930 when the new Storrs Grammar School opened (now the Audrey Beck Municipal Center in Storrs, CT).

I don't exactly know why I've been on such a cover streak lately, although, I suspect laziness is at least a significant suspect. Anyway, I like to pick things that are either significant to me in some way, a stretch or can be stretched into something else, or something out of my box. This one crept in to my world through some mention in the NYTimes. If I remember correctly it was positive. I looked for something different to cover the other day and typed in current hits and recognized this. I decided to do a fairly straight up cover and let my own style come in by just doing it fairly straight. Here's a few comments on the piece that came to mind as I was doing it:

Like most pop music these days it's one chord progression repeated over and over with the parts separated by different melodies and arraignments.

Ms. Carpenter's lyrics are kind of strange to me ie. "That's that me espresso". She does some interesting things rhythmically with her vocals so they don't sound awkward but reading them as I sung and  getting her phrasing down was a challenge. Also as a side note, it's interesting how the theme of taking advantage of the opposite sex is seen in pop music differently between males and females. One of her better lines "I know I Mountain Dew it for ya" is I think quite clever, cheeky and funny but probably would less likely be a line in a summer light pop hit from a male singer.

This is less about the music itself but the conceptual framing. I like the concept in the beginning and the end of turning the song into an old classic hit playing on the radio in the background, perhaps at the beach. It's nostalgic in the context of the song itself but also hearing actual music, playing in the background through a small cheap radio, while sitting on the beach is itself a bit of nostalgia. 

As a side note, I learned the track by listening to the YouTube video. I as I was listening I was reading many of the comments from Ms. Carpenter's much younger(than me) fans. The song, in my opinion is a fairly obvious combination of 70's Disco, 90's girl pop and a modern pop sheen. I was surprised by comments placing the song as homage to 60's or 80's pop. Probably just youthful ignorance but.
 if there's something more to it, I'm interested.
