Yak 40 (spelled Yak Sorok) is the alias of Egor Antoshchenko, Russian electronic musician currently based in Pokhara, Nepal. “Made In Nepal” is his debut mini-album, consisting of 5 tracks recorded with a basic Macbook laptop, midi controller and one hardware synth.

It is a rather eclectic thing. Enframed with two ambient pieces (Hello, Namaste and Alvida, meaning “Hello” and “goodbye” in Nepali), it reveals Yak40’s inconsistent yet adventurous approach to music. As a result, the mood shifts from one track to another. Kantele is an elegiac piece with a simple yet effective kantele (Finnish and Karelian zyther) melody, Indian percussion and a few glitches here and there. Vpered, Hariprasad! (Go, Hariprasad!) is an attempt to imagine what a Nepali rural techno party would sound like with mules snorting, shepherds shouting and an old trusty TB-303 acid line doing its thing. Ulleri (named after a small village on Annapurna Base Camp trek) is a speedy techno gem with a web of arpeggios and a mini-symphony of lush pads and gentle waves.

Very different, these tracks somehow work together very well.
