On the second single off his brand new album 'Come On and Go Off', Yameen has teamed up with rapper Ty (Ninja Tune, Tru Thoughts) on "Hard Work." The cut perfectly demonstrates Yameen's new sound: Hard-bumping hip-house aimed squarely at dancefloors (preferably the grimy ones). On the mic, Ty brings style that's somehow both aggressive and laid-back and full of not just punchlines, but real jewels, too.

For a different twist on the cut, Yameen and Ty called on DJ Enki  (@dj_enki, Oakland Faders, The 45 Sessions). His remix gives the song a boom-bap makeover complete with big, gritty drums and scratch hooks.

Whether for the dancefloor, headphones, or your booming system, "Hard Work" has got what it takes to keep you motivated and moving.

MOTION CNTRL - Say When (Yameen Remix) [Radio Edit]

Between 1998-1999, I was a member of the Philadelphia-based group, BBR: Big Brother Resistance. We were a politically-charged and socially-minded hiphop group focusing strongly on technology, the media, politics, and the control and abuse of information by corrupt corporations.

It was me on production as Binyameen and occasionally “Stinke”, and MCs Tim T and PCP. I produced all of the tracks and had a lot of “firsts” with the crew: First time in my own recording session in a real studio; first time on vinyl; first time paying my share of the rent with beats; first music video…It was a pretty prolific one or two years to be honest.

BBR would dissolve in 2000 but the label bandmate PCP created to publish the BBR music would continue well into the new millennium. That label was Arrakis Records and it was part of the Philly indie hiphop movement of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Philly-bred, San Francisco-located producer Yameen has held several aliases, but one thing that has remained constant is his powerful fascination with all things music-related. Even as a child, he was sneaking tape recorders into school or onto the bus, always on the hunt for new sounds to capture.
Then, as a teenager (and known as Stinke), he was the Webmaster for the Hieroglyphics.com site and essentially wrote the blueprint for indie hip-hop on the Web, garnering praise as one of URB magazine's Next 100. His music production debut came under the moniker SupremeEx, and his work with Tajai of Souls of Mischief garnered hefty critical praise for its high quality as well as its integration of multimedia to enhance the music's concept.
Now — under his given name Yameen — he has a new album, Never Knows Best (dropping in June on Ropeadope Records), and he has further matured as an artist and producer, moving away from the highly conceptual work of the past and focusing more on creating great music with an impressive roster of guest stars.
Drawing on past experience working with artists like Goapele, Shing02, and a pre-Hollertronix DJ Low Budget, Yameen corralled an impressive list of collaborators, including the legendary Shock G (Digital Underground), Azeem (OM Records), Lady Alma (4Hero, Black Lily), Georgia Anne Muldrow (Stones Throw), Casual (Hieroglyphics), DJ Icewater (Pharcyde, Quannum) and Maylay Sparks (!K7). While they all were artists Yameen had long been hoping to work with, he made sure that each track fit the artist. These aren't collaborations done for the sake of collaborating.
Nor are any of the tracks simply a case of pasting vocals on top of beats.
"When you introduce your collaborator's work and influence, it just transforms into something you can never ever predict or anticipate," Yameen explains. "From a production standpoint, you let go of your controlled, linear environment and open the song up to chaos, or events you have no control over. I could have never expected the album to grow in the way it has, and that's thanks in large part to the power of collaboration."
The end result is a more direct, focused album drawn from the give-and-take of creative artists trying to bring the best out of each other.

Tokyo-based multi-instrumentalist Binn Skinni and San Francisco-based producer Yameen have been friends for more than a decade, but with the Binn Yameen EP, they become official collaborators for the first time. 

This musical partnership has been a long time coming, but it's well worth the wait. It begins with Binn Skinni laying down the bass and guitar on the Yameen-produced "Feel It All" (featuring soulful vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow). To return the favor, Yameen remixes Binn Skinni's "Alone With You," and to keep the remix vibe going, longtime Yameen homie Blockhead contributes a hauntingly beautiful remix of "Feel It All" for some additional funk. Add instrumental versions of all three songs, and you've got an EP that will have you hoping for a Binn Yameen full-length.

I hollered at the homie @jitwam and asked if he would be interested in rocking some of his soulful, funky vocals over a track I was really excited about. What we came up with is “NO QUESTIONS$$”.

My man @robertbryn from Tokyo, Japan hopped on the track and laced some funky, funky bass and guitar. Kris Chau came thru and rocked the amazing cover art. This is a certified summertime jam appropriate for every time of the year.
