Jack & Leta recount their meeting, courtship, separation, and wedding on September 30, 1927. Although Leta Edna Keener had been briefly married and widowed, neither Jack nor Leta ever mentioned this until after Leta's death in 1997.

Married With Children

Jack and Leta talk about the Great Depression, when Jack lost his job in the California oil fields and they moved to Oregon for a brief time. This was likely 1930 or 1931. They stayed on an island, likely Sauvie Island which sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia River, where there was a Taylor  family from the 1880's through the 1930's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauvie_Island

Oregon Trail

Boulder (Hoover) Dam was built between 1931-36. Jack and Leta recount the time during the Depression where he worked for Lewis Construction on a railroad between Boulder City and Boulder Dam. Working On The Dam Railroad

Jack recounts a few episodes of near death experiences. The second episode occurred while working on "San Gabriel Dam #2" (Cogswell Dam) which was built between 1932-1934. The third episode occurred in the aftermath of the 1938 flood working on "San Gabriel Dam #1" (San Gabriel Dam), built between 1932-1939.

Dodging Death

Jack and Leta settled in the San Gabriel Canyon in the mid 1930's. Life was fine and dandy until March 1938 when a flood and mudslide wiped away their home in the canyon. Jack wrote his own account of the experience (typed on a Commodore 64 computer) which is posted here:

San Gabriel And The Flood

These stories follow the San Gabriel Flood and are about Jack's construction company that began in the 1940's and collapsed in the 1950's.

The Rise And Fall Of Fischer Construction

Two separate brief stories. After the failure of Jack's business, he made a three year trip to Mexico for mental health reasons. In the 1960's he bought some land in Nevada and was extracting Mercury until it was banned from its primary use, to prevent grain seeds from spoiling, in 1971.

Collecting Marbles

These stories take place from about 1922-1927. After the death of Doc Gavin (?1922), Jack went to work for the Burnham Chemical Company ( http://tronahistory.com/2013/05/27/the-burnham-chemical-company/ ). Later he went to Los Angeles to seek employment in the oil fields. During this time, he lost all of his possessions when he was believed to have smallpox.

Coming Of Age

Jack invariably would get on his soapbox to discuss various topics, including continental drift, the speed of light, God, geology, economics, sexuality, evolution, language, human instinct, and others. This from someone who completed 9 or 10 years of education. This track gives just a flavor of Jack once he got on the soapbox.

Soapbox Derby

These are all audio recordings of my grandparents, Jack (John Garfield Fischer, 1905-2003) and Leta (Leta Edna Keener, 1902-1997) done in about 1990 at their home in Auberry, California. Both were well into their 80's at the time these recordings were made. Jack loved to tell stories to anyone that would listen, while Leta occasionally attempts to maintain some social boundaries.
I have done a little editing (mostly cutting out my voice), but trying to preserve the essence of the stories.
