Modular synth master Richard Devine’s music moves like a slightly unhinged force, in rapid clicks and metallic thrums or funk addled scattering beats. An Atlanta-based producer with full length releases on Warp, Schematic, Sublight and Detroit Underground in the past 15 years, as well as an accomplished sound designer and maker of synthesizer kits (among soundtracks and samples, he’s built an expansion pack for Moog Music’s Animoog app), Devine made huge professional inroads in the digital realm, yet recently felt called to the modular and analog in his own music. Constantly reconfiguring his own hardware systems, Devine creates music by processing layer after layer of sounds derived from hip hop, pop, field recordings and electronic tracks; and in 2013 released his own official sample library, The Electronic Music Manuscript, through Sony Creative Software. Performing live, he’s equipped with an enviable arsenal of sounds and the ability to manipulate them to his experimental liking, constructing a sonic experience that’s never the same twice. MUTEK 2015 marked Devine’s first live modular set in Canada and the premiere of his “Disturbances” live patch, custom built for organic on-the-fly songwriting, from abstract ambient compositions to rhythmic bombardments.

Kiev’s Koloah returns to Hyperboloid after 3 years , and he comes prepared. He spent two years working in a studio, producing experimental music under various names, he created the completely new live set, that he presented on Boiler Room’s Future Shift. As an experiences sound producer he worked with many performers plus contributed to a few dance shows. All this influenced Koloah’s sound, making the forthcoming Back On Track EP more eclectic. His music borrows from bass, techno, electro and comes with stellar remixes by Hyperboloid’s Raumskaya and Cadeu.

The third edition of the Technosphärenklänge series, produced by the HKW in collaboration with CTM Festival, presented musical projects operating at the border of art and science. Three projects – the world’s first neural synthesizer that performs with human musicians; water droplets levitated and shaped by sound waves; and the interconnection of spatial sound and high-energy lasers – make current notions of materiality tangible and fundamentally re-think the relationship between nature, technology and human consciousness. All three projects require intensive research and constant collaboration between the artists, natural scientists and technologists. 

Robert Henke’s spectacular "Lumiere III" performance combines multichannel sound with highly energetic laser projections to create an immersive environment that puts human perception and multimodal sensory processing to the test. Light and music, optical and psychoacoustic effects, become mutually interrelated. Extreme contrasts between light and dark produce overlapping afterimages and negatives that appear blacker than black, modulating our perception of spatiality when experienced in combination with fog. Paradoxically, the previously unknown materiality of the laser light intensifies the impression of being amidst an immaterial calculating data sphere, otherwise invoked by the immersive spatiality of sound and light, the vocabulary of the visual forms, and their extreme synchronicity with the music. The phenomenological spectacle that is “Lumiere III” thus also hints at the often-neglected material foundations of information processing.
